When I argue that “common descent” is well established, I mean that in general terms — that there is strong evidence for gradual organismal changes in natural history and a general pattern of coalescence as one goes farther back into natural history.

What evidence? We are all under the impression here that there is no evidence and have been asking for examples for years. And none has been forthcoming.

Common descent is supported by a wide variety of evidence, including genomics. One of the easiest forms of evidence to understand is the succession of fossils showing the diversification of forms from common ancestors. Amateur geologists can individually verify the data. Many areas of the world have excellent geological formations exhibiting many common fossils.

It only requires looking.

Ya see there isn’t any genetic data that can account for the physiological and anatomical differences observed between chimps and humans.

Chimpanzees and humans are closely related organisms and share nearly all the same genes. Genomics is still a relatively new science, so it is not surprising there are still so many open questions. However, recent research is starting to reveal new insights into human evolution.

One such feature that distinguishes humans from other apes is a rapidly evolving gene involved in neural growth in the cerebral cortex.

What makes humans unique? A comparative genetics approach to this question reveals a candidate gene for a part in bestowing 'humanness'. Interestingly, the gene is expressed during embryonic development of the neocortex, the site of many of the brain's most sophisticated processes.

I am willing to wager a single-malt bottle of scotch that it will be discovered that a "certain sub-group of homos" (IDists and creationists) might be missing a vital link that allows them to think critically, and makes them more susceptible to religion and non-critical thinking.

Do I get moved to the Bathroom Wall for suggesting that the new group will be named Homo Stupidus?

Okay. Let's step back a second, and walk thru the reasoning process here.

People who say global warming is real say it will cause sea levels to rise and drown some islands in the South Pacific.

Yet an earthquake has raised some islands in the south Pacific.

Therefore, global warming is false.

Frankly, even by UD standards this is some breathtaking Tard.

I think tribune7 is just trying show the Intelligent Designer's intervention into Global warming.

Here everybody is worried this low-lying islands might be wiped out, so the Designer crafts up an earthwake to raise the island three whole meters. Who's worried about GW now?

So maybe some people were killed and pristine coral reefs (and along with the industries dependent on them) were destroyed. Think of it as the Ford Pinto of GW solutions. Imperfect design is still design, right?

An old knee injury flared up so my activity level decreased. I'm walking like Dr. Gregory House, M.D. Well not quite that bad. I don't really need a cane. A pocket full of Vicodan would be nice though. Any House fans here? It's my favority network program. New episodes of the Sopranos and Entourage were on Sunday evening. We watched at my daughter's new house where Easter dinner was too. ;-)

The knee and Easter feasting ruined the week, diet wise. A double whammy. I lost count of the cookies and candy, glazed ham & brisket, chips and queso, that I stuffed into my face. No beer though and just one glass of red wine but it was coffee mug full not no dainty little wine glass. :-)

We don't typically ban or edit our critics. This isn't an ID blog. But after AFDave had his 8-month, 11,000-comment discussion we decided it was best for him to move along. The main reason, actually, was to get him a new audience. We pointed him to RichardDawkins.net, which has even bigger viewership. His threads there are now into the thousands of comments. Some of us have tried encouraging him to put together a PowerPoint talk and start giving it to churches. There would be no better advertisement for evolution that that guy. He's totally nuts.

Dave spent about $100 on a tech gadget to boil his rice.
Can you believe anyone, anywhere would require a rice cooking gadget FFS?   ???

Hah!  And now he's a world class auto-didactic rice chef extraordinaire!

Even though I don't need a rice cooker to cook rice, I do have to admit that I have one (got it for free) and I love it.

Oh, That Explains It
DaveScot, the chief cook and bottle washer over at William Dembski's Uncommon Descent blog, has been on something of global warming denial tear lately.

He was especially elated by the cold snap that hit the country over the Easter weekend because, "nary a mention of global warming can be found in the news. Talk about putting a cold damper on Friday’s release of the 2007 IPCC report on so-called global warming, the timing couldn’t have been better."

April is, as T.S. Eliot wrote, the cruelest month, but did the cold snap really drive global warming news off of television screens and front pages as DaveScot suggests? We weren't so sure.

A Google news search conducted this morning for the terms global, warming, climate, and change returns this:
Quote
   * "A report released Apr. 6 in Brussels by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projected the effects of global warming on the planet's ecosystems... " 645 references.
   * Even up in chilly Canada, "UN Report Proves Canada Must Act Now On Climate Change... " got 44 references.
   * "As debate over the scope of global warming continues, local officials across the country have crafted their own policies. Austin, Texas, has a 'Climate ... " 108 references.
   * "Diplomats from 115 countries and 52 scientists hashed out the most comprehensive and gloomiest warning yet about the possible effects of global warming, ... " 65 references.
Adding "IPCC" to the search terms listed above returned a total of 2,202 news articles

Perhaps DaveScot's inability to discover news about global warming should give the rest of us some insight into his corresponding incapacity to detect any evidence for evolution in the natural world.

We've updated our YouTube Video of the Day in the sidebar with a "Listen to the Scientists" on Global Warming and the IPCC featuring Dr. Michael MacCracken, Chief Scientist for Climate Change Programs with the Climate Institute.

Don't know the reference sorry, Dickens was no match for Waugh on matters American. So maybe I should have said a formaldehyde smelling shroud recently recovered from use at 'The Happy Hunting Ground' pet cemetery where it had been accidentally sent packed with other rags for swabbing dead horses. Once the mistake was realized 'The Loved One', Bill's episcopal gown with KKK point circumcised, was cleaned and made to look new for its afterlife as the second coming Emperors dream coat.

“Framing Science” — Because the masses cannot be reasoned with but must be manipulated
William Dembski

“Framing,” as a colleague of mine pointed out, is the term that UC Berkeley Professor of Linguistics George Lakoff uses to urge Democrats that the public will agree with liberal policies if only the policies are described in different terms — “framed” in other words. Politics aside, framing is part and parcel with the condescension of our secular elite that the masses cannot be reasoned with and must therefore be manipulated.

DaveScot, last year:

I will remind everyone again - please frame your arguments around science. If the ID movement doesn’t get the issue framed around science it’s going down and I do not like losing. The plain conclusion of scientific evidence supports descent with modification from a common ancestor...

DaveScot admires real science:

Quote
Desperate cancer patients sent home to die for lack of any further FDA-approved treatment for their advanced cancers have started reporting miraculous improvements. One man with bladder cancer who couldn’t even walk and whose weight was plummeting as his body was shutting down stopped losing weight after 2 weeks on DCA and after 4 weeks has gained 11 pounds and is not only walking again, he’s exercising and his bladder spasms have subsided. Another woman with a tumor on her spine, unable to walk because of it and told by her doctor she’d probably never walk again, is back on her feet after 5 days on DCA. And there’s one report of a cat rapidly using up the last bit of its ninth life from a huge abdominal tumor is now on the mend and feisty enough to shove the other cats aside to get to the food dish

Dave is now running trials to determine if administration by dog dish is more effective than cat dish.

Returning to the genetic markers.

Imagine a table, and in the middle a perfectly stacked deck of cards ace to kings (call this the common deck). Either side of the table sits ‘Chimp’ and ‘Champ’ both with identical copies of the common deck. Both Chimp and Champ represent lineages to disparate organisms which share genetic markers.

To represent evolution in time both Chimp and Champ are asked to shuffle their cards for a few second - after this they lay their cards down and examine the similarities. It would be expected that both would have small sequences identical to each others and also to the common deck.

This is an interesting thought experiment. But can we determine a nested hierarchy from just two individuals, Chimp and Champ?

Let's assume common descent. If the mutation rate is very high, then genetic evidence (patterns in the deck of playing cards) will be scant or non-existent. This seems to be Acquiesce's point. If the mutation rate is very low, then there will be little evolutionary change.

Of course, it turns out that all organisms on Earth share at least some of their genetic material. Heredity is not random and humans share most of their genes with other apes. We observe the change in genomes and can determine the rate of change is consistent with the change observed over eons of time. So the deck is not "shuffled"; rather small changes accumulate over time.

The pattern of a nested hierarchy is not merely a similarity, but a correlation of various traits. For instance, having mammary glands implies having vertebrae. This can be explained by common descent of mammals from a common vertebrate ancestor. As there are thousands of such correlations, and empirical predictions can be made and verified, this is very strong scientific support for the Theory of Common Descent.

Not "nothing" necessarily, but a reasonable distinction. We can accept common descent and reject natural selection as a mechanism.

Nevertheless, Common Descent implies that broad changes have occurred over long periods of time. Acceptance of this basic concept is important before discussing the mechanisms of this change. That's why IDers refuse to commit on something even so obvious. Any child at a natural history museum can see the truth of evolutionary change over time. And detailed scientific investigation only strengthens the case.

So, can we determine a nested hierarchy from just two individuals, Chimp and Champ? No, it takes at least four. And the more the merrier. It turns out that all extant and extinct species fit a single nested hierarchy of descent (with a possible exception at the very root of the tree — at the very limits of observation).

Sorry for the off-topic but I wanted to leave a note for Blipey and I know it'll get to him if I leave it here.

I was checking the calendar to make sure there weren't any all day soccer tournaments on Sunday, May 13th, and was reminded that's Mother's Day. I won't be available for any meetings on that day.

oh wow. It's in the "dog ate my homework" league of excuses. I bet DS' mom dreads that day coming round.
And I take it if there had been an all day soccer tournament then that would have trumped all other events also? What a whirlwind exciting life the DS must have, the dell multimillionaire and innovator.

ALL RIGHT YOU GOT ME. THE REAL REASON IS MY CHAINSAW IS IN THE SHOP, I HAD TROUBLE WITH MY RICE STEAMER AND IT NEEDED A LITTLE ADJUSTING. WHEN WE DID RICE STEAMER ADJUSTING 101 IN HELICOPTER SCHOOL THE SARG (GOD REST HIS SOUL) SAID MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG IT FROM THE MAINS BEFORE YOU ADJUST IT. I FORGOT AND THE CHAINSAW GOT ITS CARBY FUSED. LUCKY FOR ME I WAS STILL WEARING RUBBER GLOVES AFTER BILL CAME ROUND.... DON'T ASK.-dt

I just want to tell you all that I'd meet any one of you in person, no matter how many all day soccer games there were. I love you guys.
