It's spectacularly beautiful and pretty cosmopolitan and it's very easy to get to Glasgow, Newcastle and London. But then I don't know much about Swansea - much more industrial I imagine, but south Wales has been experiencing something of a renaissance recently. Which university is she going to? That makes a difference too - there are more than one in each city I think.

Edinburgh Uni. has an very good reputation as well. I stayed in one of the halls of residence last year when I went there for a wedding and they were fairly good (better than I got as a student, anyway...) I dont know much about Swansea. Most of South Wales is old ex-coal and industry country, maybe not as nice as Edinburgh. Although the Uni isnt one of the top ones I think its OK. On the plus side Wales is really the place to go for the rugby. Whatever she chooses, Britain is a cool place (although as a Brit Im biased) and Im sure she will enjoy it.

I feel I have to defend South Wales. It's a beautiful place, with friendly people, and would be cheaper to live in than Edinburgh  (although practically everywhere is). That said, despite the love of rugby being more likely to be satiated in Swansea, Edinburgh Uni will probably be a better choice, because I KNOW that place is a fantastic University, whereas I don't know much about Swansea as a university. -------------- I'm not the fastest or the baddest or the fatest. You NEVER seem to address the fact that the grand majority of people supporting Darwinism in these on line forums and blogs are atheists. Erasmus is deluding himself because he likes to dress up as a sheep and hopes I'm a Welshman for the obvious sordid reason. Sorry Erasmus, but as I told you last time: "No. Not with those hips, sweetheart." 2) If it's rugby she wants to experience then Wales is currently the place to be. (Aside: Well done Wales! A very well deserved Grand Slam. I am genuinely pleased for you) 3) If it's education she wants then Edinburgh is the place, a very decent uni. Swansea's not bad, it's just not as good as Edinburgh. I don't know much about Chem Eng, but the Chem dept at Edinburgh is well regarded. Just before you all let loose with the jokes, I was born and brought up in Edinburgh, went to school in the city centre, etc.  Unfortunately the city ahs changed somewhat over the years, only marginally for the better. As for J-Dogs daughter, Edinburgh is a medium sized town, there is definitely rugby due to the penchant for yahs to come to Edinburgh university.  I would reccomend it over Swansea unless you like to live in Wales.  Of course it will be a bit colder and windier in Edinburgh.  It depends on what sort of amenities your daughter likes, eg bookshops, Edinburgh has lots.  Nightclubs, ditto.

Basically Guthrie is pointing out that Edinburgh Uni is one of the many havens (St Andrews, Durham etc) for those members of the monied/upper middle classes who had a private school education. Typically "Yahs" were not smart enough to make the cut for entry to Cambridge or the other place, but were smart enough to be able to string a sentence together sufficiently well to blag their way through Clearing onto some humanities or social science course at a Red Brick (perhaps even Russell Group) university. See Wikipedia entry for "Future Foxton's Estate Agents in London and People Most Likely To Bankrupt Their Investment Bank/Hedge Fund". ;-) So, when your daughter is far from home and being hit on in a bar by drunken morons, at least she will be being hit on by comparatively well bred drunken morons from a good home who have a decent chance of living in or near Clapham. J-dog- surely you can find out in advance if there is a womans rugby team at Swansea or Edinburgh.  I'm sure there will be one at Edinburgh, we had a womans rugby team in St Andrews, and I'm sure they played Edinburgh.   As for yahs, they say "yah" instead of "yes".  Just to give you an idea, I was back up at St Andrews last year, and thougth I'd drop by one of the university halls I had stayed at when I was there.  Since I was there they've actually knocked it down and rebuilt it (Nothing to do with me).  So I drive into the car park and realise there are lots of cars that are only 1 or 2 years old.  Or in other words, in the world of yahs, your parents will give you a new car when you go away to uni.  (Or your summer job at uncle johns merchant bank will pay enough to buy you a new car)
