Same as every summer, Pinkie, Conquer the WORLD torture a bunch of students who won't believe me that they shouldn't take ANP* in the summer - and defend New France from les cochonchien Anglais on the weekends.

*Just finished the second major exams, today.

Well I have an interesting option coming up.  At the end of the week I'm heading out to DC for a little good old fashioned touristy fun.  Smithsonian, here I come!

Also there'll be a few days at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, and a trip to Colonial Williamsburg as well for some historical re-enactment fun.  Also I expect to be having my brains baked to oblivion by the sun, the weather forecast is sounding hot.

But I have an option mixed in there.  Next week is the start of this big NEA (National Education Association, basically the teacher's union) convention event that's also held in DC.  I'm not a teacher or anything, my only association with it is that my mother is a member.  But that lets me get a sort of guest pass if I should want to go inside the thing.

Normally I wouldn't.  Normally I'd stay the hell away from such a concentrated gathering of politics.  But there's one thing that goes on there that I think was mentioned on Pharyngula last year.  They have space where people can set up tables to promote things, I know little about it except that every year they have these creationists set up a booth to promote creationism.  I had assumed they were following the codeword trends so that they would have been using ID and then switched to teach the controversy and then strengths and weaknesses, but I've been told they were still calling it creation science.

So I'm baffled.  It would appear that these guys are trying to get people to consider teaching something long deemed illegal.

I want to check them out.  Plus I want to see the crowd vacuum effect.  I'm also told that the crowd tends to avoid them, since they try to engage people that pass by to start feeding them the propaganda.  So what happens is the crowd stays away from them and you get a gap surrounding the table.  Like a repulsion field powered by ignorance.

I also want to get a taste of their standard arguments.  I know they've been reported to use the "I know some professor in some school somewhere that assures me that more and more scientists are starting to doubt evolution" gambit, and I'd like to know just who this professor is, what school he works at, and what his field of expertise is.

I also just want to ask them if they realize that if teachers do what they're asking them to do, they'd be breaking the law.

I'll pick up the pamphlets they're offering, and if there's any interest in this I could write up a report on them, but I don't really expect them to be anything new.  The impression I get is that they're more of a sad, pathetic holdout than a bold new attempt to subvert science education in order to promote religious indoctrination.  The current trend of academic freedom bills in state legislatures is not good.  These guys, on the other hand, I don't think even register on the radar of education subversion.

I would like to find out what the rules are regarding such exhibitions, though.  I'm a little unclear how the NEA could allow people to promote something that's illegal.

Bravo to you if you can go to the NEA thing and snag a couple of pamphlets.  Don't forget to wear the silver cross your Mom got you when you were ten - you'll get extra pamphlets that way.

re:  booth space for ID law breakers - I think the NEA are just being good old-fashioned capitalists here, and renting space to make money.  I think that the Marketing wing of the NEA is licking their collective chops, and thanking The Designer that Teaching Teh Controversy allows them to take the ID money with plausebal deniability.

That is an interesting interpretation.  Mine had always been that they were a sort of painfully politically correct organization, and that I assumed that they must have all sorts of regulations about non discrimination.  So when some religious wackadoodles show up and want space they bend over backwards to be nice and accommodating in order to show how fair they are.

Perhaps there's a certain attempt to prevent criticism as well, I seem to recall that someone had alleged the NEA was part of the evil darwinist conspiracy because it decided what students would be taught.

I guess I'm a little more cynical than you... but you're young, you have plenty of time before you have to start thinking the worst about people, and politics and IDists.

HEY!  YOU DAMN KIDS GET OFF OF MY LAWN!..

I did a couple of summer things early--Grand Canyon backpack in mid-April (ya don'ts want to do it in mid-summer, too frickin' HOT!) and a visit down to SoCal during which I got to introduce my second cousin (who I hadn't seen in 47 years, not that I'm even that old...) to my college roommate.  A few drinkies and lots of good stories.

The Grand Canyon thing has been fodder for lots of fun with good ol' AF Dave Hawkins over at TalkRational.

Interestingly, eric murphy also went to the GC a few weeks later with his parents (even older than me, so they weren't actually backpacking down in the GC). which of course led to more good fodder, etc. ...

Given the gas situation, I don't know if I'll do any long trips this summer, but that still leaves lots of mountains to climb and lots of books to read and lots of yardwork to do, right here in the Pacific NW.

Not to mention the drinking.

I had enrolled in a summer ceramics class.  I taught ceramics for many years. The first school classes I taught were middle school science for Spanish speakers, in 1971. Then the school added us to the "mentally gifted" classes, after the "retarded" Hispanics started to excel. I next taught high school science in 1972, specifically tenth grade "life science."

But, in my last year in high school I took ceramics. 1971 was the year I flunked sophomore orgainic chemistry at UCI. And starting in 1971, I taught pottery to UC Irvine students. 1971 was the year I built my first kiln.

These pottery associated activities, and flunking organic (well, really a "D" in the second session) were directly associated with my doctorate in 1976. I really liked science (just not organic chem), I really liked pottery. The ceramics program at UCI was dominated by a "minimalist" principal, Dept. Head, John Mason.

In a tale for another day, I incorrectly though that I could not study with John Mason. (I think that I was better off in science, but around 1973 I did become one of Jhon Mason's students).

So, I became an anthropologist who specialized in the study of ceramic technologies. Dissertation ensued following five years in the pottery making villages of Yucatan, Mexico. (And learning Spanish, and Yucateco Mayan).

I have had various ceramic projects in mind for over 30 years. So, I tried to sit through the first few days of a Community College ceramics class. It did not help that this was a school that fired me the same year I was named "Professor of the Year," and the Board of Trustees awarded me a "Certificate of Meritorious Service."

My pottery class teacher is a nitwit. I am better qualified to teach this class than he is.  I was told directly that independent projects were not allowed, so I can neither execute the projects I want to see done, nor avoid the obstructive piffle from the "teacher."

I quit today, day 2.

So guess when Yr Humble Corrspt. is going to visit the aforementioned aforementioned?

Correct.

However, seeing that the Atlantic Ocean is currently trying to transplant itself into my back garden, anything involving sun would be welcome, Club Gitmo not excepted.

Also taking in SF, bits of National Parks, Vegas, driving down the coast, and gawping at LA.

Given the lax state of US laws on divorce, I have been careful to remove one potential ground for it by reserving a car with SatNav.

A week in Gulf Shores, AL at the ocean's edge (actually that already happened & it was wooooonderful :p ) then various weekends pursuing Oncorhynchus mykiss with my trusty fly rod and playing amateur entomologist. Besides that, refreshing my knowledge of Muscular Dystrophy as I will be working with a student who has the disease next school year. Oh, yes, completing my last 50 lbs of my weight loss plan (85 lbs to date :D )

No real secret. Last December we (the Missus and me) joined a health club and I became addicted to exercise. I went from being North America's leading candidate for a massive coronary infarction to a reasonably buff gym rat over the last six months. I actually started last November at 338 lbs and am currently at 250 lbs. My goal is ultimately to be at 200 lbs.

Read more books. Meet more friends. Create a sock-puppet in UD.

I managed to meet Bob O' last night in a Finnish bar. It was fun and informative. Bob survived the shock of meeting someone who doesn't drink alcohol.

Later I had passionate kisses...

But not from Bob.

Someone who doesn't drink alcohol wasn't the problem.  A Finn who doesn't drink alcohol.  Now, that's a different matter.  It appears that not all watchmakers are blind, which is probably a good thing.

Yes, a good evening was had by both.  I didn't have any passionate kisses, but the cat did deign to sit on me.

Good for you. That's really impressive weight loss. I've been in a serious workout routine for about 3.5 months now and made drastic improvement. It's all about consistency. In my process, in the beginning, I was really out of shape, and could only swim a quarter mile, then after a few weeks, 3/8ths of a mile, after another few weeks half a mile, then 5/8ths, then 3/4ths, etc, etc. and at the moment I'm doing a mile in about 50 minutes. It's very important to keep at it. Discover your inner Nazi, who forbids you from quitting. Several times I've wanted to postpone a workout, only to discover that I had no choice.

I have to say, though, the 30 workouts or so which quadrupled my swim distance, were actually easier than losing so much weight. That requires constant vigilance. More power to you.

I was dating a swedish girl and her dad and I were drinking buddies. He told me a joke:

Two Fins go to a bar. The bartender pours two shots of Gammel Dansk. One Fin takes the glass and holds it up and says, "cheers". The other fin says, "You going to drink, or you going to talk all day?"

He found it hilarious.

If you make it to that stand, please share your experience with us by making some pictures ;) Sounds funny.
Anyway, I'll probably won't do much. I'll just work (yeap, summer vacation for students means work, woohoo) so I can pay for a laptop (about 700 euro's) and the schoolbooks I need for next year (apperantly about 600 euro's). Yay...summer... I should do something about my potbelly though, a 17 year old weighing over 90 kg's (even if he's almost 2 meters in length), isn't réally good.

Here's another accurate portrait of Finns:

A man travels across the plains, forests and rows a boat across a vast lake. He comes to a house on a hill. He enters it. A man is waiting inside. The traveller opens his backbag. He slams a bottle after bottle of booze on the table. All sorts of vodka and spirits. 40 bottles. Finally, one loaf of bread.
"What are we gonna do with all that bread?", The other man asks.

J-Dog, my bad!  Somehow I have not read this thread until now.  When are you going to be in KC (if you haven't already been and gone)?

If BBQ of the Gods is still in your future, I know about 20 places you should go.  And I'm sure I can take some time off of grant seeking and show writing to buy you a beer.
