Just a few points:

It's funny, in a face-palm sort of way, that some of you are SO damned eager to condemn the guy who was ALLEGEDLY in the elevator, and who ALLEGEDLY said what was ALLEGEDLY said to the woman, even though you are REAL QUICK to thoroughly blast IDiots who ASSUME things and automatically believe things that are ALLEGED, but WITHOUT verifiable evidence.

And SO fucking what IF he did say what she says he said?

'Oh the poor little dear sobbing buckets of tears! We MUST stand up for her and protect her and all the other women on Earth from evil, rotten, crude, drooling, sex crazed, pushy men who are POTENTIAL rapists! After all, ALL men are sex crazed knuckle dragging monsters and POTENTIAL rapists who are deliberately looking for a situation where they can TRAP a woman in an elevator and then force themselves on her! That poor, poor dear, what horror she must have gone through in that elevator! How DARE that despicable manbeast offer coffee and a chat! How dare he speak to her! Castrate him! Burn him at the stake! Cut off his head and his dick and put them on a tall spike in the town square as a warning to all other POTENTIAL rapists! All men should be leashed and ball-gagged and never allowed to talk to women! Women are just too frail and innocent to take care of themselves and they must be shielded from men who have the unmitigated gall to speak to them!'

That's how some of you, and many others on other sites, are coming across.

Most of the responses to me are just way too ridiculous, distorted, and irrelevant to what I've actually said that it's not even worth responding directly to them. I did write a fairly long response to one of you yesterday but then hit the wrong key and it vanished into oblivion, and I'm not going to rewrite it.

And in case anyone gives a shit, I did show this thread to my daughter and to a female friend (who is happily married to another guy), and they both strongly agree with what I've said. In fact, they also both said that some of you women (you should know which ones) need to get off your princess-wannabe thrones and come down to Earth and actually practice the 'equality' you say you want so much. They also said that some of you men (you should know which ones) are clearly pussy-whipped.

I never thought I'd say this on this site but some of you sound way too much like kairosfocus and his extreme 'morality' crap (especially the "verbal rapists" bullshit), and I'm also reminded of all the so-called and self-proclaimed "free thinkers" and "rational skeptics" who, when the religious IDiots are whining about being offended and are demanding "respect" (actually special treatment) for their beliefs and practices, are quick to bring up free speech and say to the religious wackos: "You don't have the right to not be offended."

Double standards anyone?

You shouldn't assume that everyone here agrees with everything that anyone's said either here or at other blogs. I've indicated in my response to you that I stopped reading about EG after the first few comments and posts about it. But this is certainly not my opinion:

My opinion is that the guy probably didn't intend anything sinister, and it isn't important for the point of the story anyway. When (if) he asked her to come to his room for a coffee and continued discussion, he could have meant exactly that, and the point of the story would remain intact, IMO.

As a woman, you don't go to a hotel room with someone that you do not know in the middle of the night if you don't want to have sex with him (or at least consider it). You just don't do it. That is not because you think all men are potential rapists. That is because you know that you can't know beforehand whether someone specific is the one asshole in a hundred completely decent men.
And it doesn't need to be rape to make a situation in which a man doesn't like No for an answer to make it really unpleasant. Maybe he'd just kick you out after calling you a frigid bitch. I had some guy tell me I'd been a complete waste of his time after I declined an offer to go to his place (with crystal clear intentions in that case) after we'd had an - in my opinion - interesting discussion for an hour or so. In another situation a guy was so insistent that I got out of his car, and after I asked him to stop it and bring me back home, he just left me standing there in the middle of nowhere. Took me over an hour wandering around to find a phone to call a taxi. I'd actually liked that guy. Kristine had to pepper spray a guy. Being in a situation like that is not nice.

You just can't know what the intentions of someone are or how someone'll react to rejection. I don't think that RW was feeling immediately threatened but she obviously felt uncomfortable. I bet some variation of "How can he think that I'd go to his hotel room with him" went through her head, not because he wasn't attractive enough but because most women wouldn't do that with a complete stranger.
She had to reject him not knowing how he'd react, in a small confined space without the possibility to get away. That is not a pleasant situation to be in. The guy obviously wasn't a rapist, and he obviously didn't take her rejection badly. Good for him! A decent guy! But she couldn't know that beforehand and it doesn't make her feeling uncomfortable and slightly creeped out because of it somehow invalid or irrational.*

So, what was her point in telling her story (initially)? Did she say that "All men should be leashed and ball-gagged and never allowed to talk to women" and that the guy asking her should be castrated? Or did she rather say that "Guys, if you want to ask a woman to join you for a coffee (or for sex), do it in a situation where she can get away if she doesn't feel like it. Don't do it in circumstances that make it both unlikely that she'll accept and potentially creep her out." She was telling decent guys who hopefully don't want to creep women out how not to creep women out.

That, at least, is my take on the story. I don't know what went down afterwards, and I'm not interested in reading up on it. I stopped reading because IMO the comments quickly became ridiculous on all sides. I don't doubt that there were completely over-the-top comments that contained elements of your version, but just because I can understand why RW was creeped out that doesn't mean that I hold any of these opinions, nor does it change the fact that there're situations in which women feel creeped out or even threatened by a man even if that man's intentions are completely harmless.

*A little reminder that this is not all in those feeble women's heads:

Woman raped in elevator
- Woman Raped At Knife Point In Elevator Of Harlem Building
- Cops: Woman Raped in Downtown Sacramento Elevator
- Woman reports rape in downtown Ann Arbor parking structure elevator
- Police seek man who raped a woman in Bridge Apartments elevator
- Woman raped in elevator of Washington Heights building

etc. just from the first page of a google search.

It's hard to believe that what amounts to a notincident not only created the stir it did, but has now been resurrected for another go-around.  It brings to mind Loudon Wainwright III and his "Drinking Song" and in particular the opening verse:

Drunk men stumble, drunk men fall
Drunk men swear and that's not all
Quite often they will urinate outdoors

Drunk people do stupid things.  There was plenty of reason for the woman involved to feel uncomfortable, and even afraid, because drunk men also do unspeakable things sometimes, and those things are often directed at women.   As it turned out the man was rude, or at least obliviously insensitive, and caused someone to be uncomfortable and indignant.  This is not the stuff of great controversy.

Men, and especially young ones, want to have sex, and lots of it.  It's a biological imperative.   This causes some of them to do rude and insensitive things. This is not an excuse, however, for rude and insensitive behavior, because as John Hiatt, another of my favorite songwriters said, "We can choose, you know we ain't no amoebas"  Therein lies the seed of the controversy, which is not a controversy at all. Someone did something stupid and insensitive and someone else thought, apparently, that commonplace behaviors are the stuff of Profound Meaning and Injustice.  They're not.

As for PZ, there's no doubt in my mind that he occasionally foments this type of thing deliberately and with great glee in his powers of manipulation.  He is, in that sense, a sort of liberal Rush Limbaugh at times.  He throws a pork chop into a pen of hungry dogs and then sits back and watches with delight as the post count rises. That many otherwise intelligent and perceptive people allow PZ to attach his electrodes to them amazes me sometimes.

As long as it raises hackles, people will talk about it, and it'll be used for traffic (or whatever other purpose people want).

Your point about drunk men is the same for drunk women.  If you ever lived in bars like I have, from college through the army and after I got out, especially bars near military bases, you'd know that drunken stupidity is egalitarian.  Biologically, both men and women want sex.  Depending on the culture and the conditions, they may go about it different ways, but there's a lot of times they don't.  That's a point that many seem to forget - they seem to rely on the old-fashioned notions of women not wanting sex or having to be protected from evil sex-seeking men.  I'm not saying this is you, just that the general point gets turned into that for some (just using your comment as a springboard).  To me it's pretty patronizing, and granted, most of the women I know are or have been military, but I listen to my kids at school and can tell that the girls are just as responsible as the boys.  Cultural norms have been changing (or maybe that's sub-cultural?).

That doesn't take away all the dangers (rape, robbery, assault, embarrassment, whatever), just that the whole affair isn't quite so cut-and-dried as some people prefer to think (or want others to think for reasons of their own).

To be fair to RW, she is a (somewhat) prominent blogger/vlogger. She chose to use the video media to make her feelings heard. No problems with me on her choice.

But this has never been the problem at the heart of EGate (well, FTB/ERV wise).

I've certainly not been condemning the guy. I've merely been pointing out that I understand RW's initial comment and her POV on the subject. Of note, she didn't condemn the guy either as far as I can tell - she merely stated that such an action was not well-thought out and was definitely not going to be successful in that situation. As a word of caution, she said to us, "just don't do it". She didn't say the guy was a creep, just that his actions in that situation were creepy.

In fact, I've not seen a post in this thread condemning the guy. Can I ask what you've interpreted as condemnation of the guy?

And for the record, I stand by my perspective about the behavior in that situation even if it didn't actually happen, because the actuality of the event is irrelevant in this case. From a situational perspective, the behavior illustrates ignorance of another person's perspective and comfort level and is a perfectly good teaching model.

What makes me sad about the online atheist movement over the last couple of years is this kind of continual divisiveness amongst the potential leaders.

Mooney first of all sees himself as a communicator but told a major stakeholder group to STFU.

Now with Elevatorgate. PZ should have said that he is 50 year old geek from a small town and never dated anybody but his wife and so will stay out of this discussion except that everybody deserves respect. Instead he is giving relationship advice!!!111onety-one.

I think that it is kind of sad but I think our movement needs a leader that will bring people together rather than keep kicking heads with those we don't 100% agree.

Or am I wrong? Were people like MLK jr, Ghandi and Mandela dicks in the early parts of their movements?

What's sad is that the people who've put themselves forth as leaders show none of the qualities that leaders should have.

Given that our movement has only one thing in common - lack of belief in a god, I think it'll be really hard to find one leader.  We're more a collection of groups of people who share beliefs.  I think we need leaders, and the ones who are trying to push themselves forward haven't shown that they have the ability to be good at it.  The old saw of the best leader being the one who doesn't want the job comes to mind.

Wow...haven't popped in for a while, and you're still carrying on about the Elevator thing?

Once a dude asked me to dance, I said no, he persisted...even grabbing at me...until I got very rude.  Then he proceeded to throw a pitcher of beer on me.

Best thing that ever happened in my entire life.  My future husband (who I had just met that night) rushed up and save me.

YaY!

So what's with Abbie in this story?  Missed that part.

Uh, apparently MLK Jr. used his dick, as did teh Kennedys. ;)

Meh, the only thing I fear is self-righteousness itself. That's what's going on among certain outspoken atheists, and I'm ready to puke from it. I trust people who admit to having a little bit of tarnish.

But it's pretty normal for people to be dicks and brilliant. Off the top of my head I can remember the big incomprehensible fights between Salman Rushdie and John Le Carre; Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Hermann (actually all on Hitchcock's side); George Sand and Frédéric Chopin; Andre Breton and just about everyone else in and outside of the surrealist movement with the exception of Benjamin Peret; and Isaac Newton and his classmates, plus all of the people he sent to the gallows. Beethoven was pretty combative, too. Einstein ignored his wife. Etc., etc., etc.

Atheist does not equal "rational." I've learned that the hard way. In other news, my cat went missing today, so I'm extra sick of EG unless someone finds my little pookie in an elevator.  ???

This! I hope you will find him soon. I wouldn't be able to type anything if Darwinette went missing.
