Any Audacity experts out there?  I got a USB turntable for Christmas and am having all sorts of problems trying to digitize some albums.  I have a few questions that, hopefully, will be quick to answer.

PM me please.  Thanks in advance.

I was thinking that heddle should post his kid's video on this thread for posterity.

My kid plays the cello, and he turned me on to this band called Apocalytica.  They play classical/rock/metal.  Kinda unique.

Careful FTK, Apocalyptica is a (not so typical but still) metal band.

The music of teh Devil!!!

Besides that, I hope you enjoy them, I saw them twice in concert, and it's incredible how much energy they deliver on stage with classical instruments.

And I agree that dheddle should post his son's videos here for all to enjoy...

I would love to take my kid to one of their concerts...he loves playing the cello, and I think it would inspire him all the more.  Not sure if they ever tour in the US?  I'll have to look into that.

I like Apocalyptica, but it just isn't the same without the well-loved Hetfield "Yeah!" mixed in.

Linky for context

I'd love to see Peer Gynt mounted to suit their version of "In The Hall Of The Mountain King".

Gary Moore (Skid Row, Thin Lizzy...) passed way in his sleep this morning, in Spain.

After John Barry, this beginning of 2011 really stinks for music... :(

Mick Karn and Gerry Rafferty also left us this year already.

I know there are more than a few here at AtBC that fondle the guitar with much delight. I don't know how many are acoustic finger pickers.

I am...and I just learned of the recent passing of one of my main idols.

The world has lost a guitar genius without parallel.

I was privileged enough to attend a guitar camp he headlined, spending 2 2-hour private sessions learning from him. Oh...and share a bottle of "fantastic" Glenmorangie Highland over dinner after meeting back up with him at Denver concert years later.

John Renbourn - NY Times

John Renbourn - The Gaurdian

John and Bert were the guitarists I wanted to be. I would also thank them for introducing me to the music of Mingus and Monk.

I first heard John Renbourn on the Pentangle album, Basket of Light, around 1970.I have several of his CDs.

I never checked this thread, on account of it didn't occur to me that "Muso" could be "music" misspelled…

I don't play guitar, or bass, or any stringed instrument, really. I'm okay on keyboards, but I prefer vocals, which I'm awfully damn good at, if I do say so myself; I'm in the baritone section of Schola Cantorum, and I was in a band which never really went anywhere. I was fairly active in filking several years ago, but fafiated due to financial issues.

Does anybody care if I post photos of my (non-guitar) instruments?

Well, we'd need to know what "instruments" euphemizes.

Speaking of Euphonius instruments, it is scary to note the passing of another creative original, who rarely produced canned music.

Another one gone...RIP Dan Hicks.

My instruments!

This one is Yamaha's SHS-10. Classic keytar, introduced to the market in 1987; I picked this one up on eBay a few months back. The ones that showed up in the US were red; Yamaha also made them in grey (like this one) and black models, the color of the case being the only difference between them all. DEVO may have been the most prominent SHS-10 users.

It's got 25 built-in voices, plus 25 built-in automatic percussion/accompaniment styles. No provision for modifying the voices. No MIDI in, but does have MIDI out on channels 1 thru 16. Built-in speaker so's you can play the thing without an external amp. Can run on six AA-cell batteries; with an external AC adapter, can run on house current.

This beast is another keytar, specifically Roland's Lucina AX-09. 150 built-in voices. Some minor voice-mod capabilities, but the user interface for said functions is (as you might surmise from the photo) highly awkward and inconvenient, so I haven't bothered with customizing any of the sounds. Fortunately, all the built-in voices are pretty damn good (albeit some are special-purpose sounds with a rather limited range of utility), so customizing said voices is more of a gee-it'd-be-nice thing than a practical necessity. Alas, the Lucina has no on-board speakers; one must plug into an external amplifier if one wishes to hear the thing.

On-board memory lets you store 12 voices, any of which you can recall with a two-button command; it also has a USB port, which lets you make a USB connection to a computer (control a software synth with the AX-09's keyboard, record/play music from a software sequencer), or plug in a USB thumb drive to make a backup copy of everything. Runs on eight AA-cell batteries (the manual specifies that they gotta be rechargeable NiMH batteries), or on house current via AC adapter. Mucho MIDI features, both -in and -out.

What's a 'tubon'?

[googling]

Ah… that's a tubon. Nice toy, but I'd rather not be stuck with 1966-vintage electronic voices. Hmm… maybe use current tech to build something with the same form factor…

And one more instrument, that I took a crap picture of the first time and just got around to re-taking!

It's a melodica, aka melodion. If you think of it as a harmonica with a keyboard, you'll be pretty close; that jobbie sticking off to the left is the mouthpiece into which you blow air, and each key is hooked up to obstruct or allow airflow past its own dedicated metal reed. Yes, I fully realize that "metal reed" is a weird phrase, but them's the breaks. In addition to the standard mouthpiece, it also came with a hose long enough that you can hold the thing in a position that lets you see the keyboard properly whilst playing it:

It's the Performer37 model from Hohner (see also: "harmonica with a keyboard"). 37 keys yields a range of a touch more than three octaves; I'd kinda like to have a melodica with a wider range than that, but the only ones I've been able to find out about on the net are 44-key models that cost an order of magnitude more than my Hohner did. Sorry, guys, but I ain't got that much money to throw around!

Am pleasantly surprised to discover the number of AtBC regulars who are musically inclined. Depending on physical locations, it might be nice to try to get together for a jam session or something. Myself, I'm in San Jose, California; anybody else in the Bay Area? Specific details of your location need not be mentioned in the forum, that's what PM and/or email is for.
