My house is so built on rock previous owners had to try growing a lawn on bedrock. What needed chiseling out to look like a flat yard became the Gaulin Tracksite, problem solved. And speaking of rock there are a couple of good videos in this new reply for UD that also mentions needing a solid base of support for something lasting to be achievable:
