That's very interesting, midwifetoad.  Also your other posts make me very glad I live here, corrupt though things are here as well.

I think our checks and balances are slightly superior though.

LOL.

I watch too much BBC and see too many shows where defendants are led to the gallows immediately after the trial.

Every place looks worse from a distance because journalists are paid to stir up fear and loathing. Nice people and nice events don't sell.

My wife grew up in a quiet neighborhood in Chicago and went to a high school that was 95 percent black. She had to face questions all her life about Al Capone.

And Chicago right now, from a distance, looks like a hell hole. But I have been in hell holes, including Vietnam in 1968, and even that looks worse through the lens of journalism.

In fact everything I have ever had personal knowledge of that was reported on has been distorted or completely botched.

Edit to add:

My knowledge of British law has been formed entirely by watching Rumpole.

My personal knowledge of American courts was formed in seven years of working in Children's Protective Services. I frequently testified in court as an advocate for the state in the interest of the child.

I had cases that were reported, and the reporting was rubbish. I can excuse this in part because state employees can't discuss these cases.
