Joe, if it is any consolation, it would not have helped if you had known this tidbit of information when you were arguing with the King James only crowd. Many years ago when I learned about Erasmus’ role in writing the Textus Receptus, the Greek text on which the KJV is based, I started using this information in my arguments with the KJV only types. I hoped that perhaps I could jolt them out of their intellectual stupor by confronting them with the conflict between their virulent anti-Catholicism and the role a Catholic priest played in developing the KJV. In retrospect, I should have known that an appeal to reason would be useless with this crowd, because they have already sunk to a fideism of the basest sort. They duly informed me that the Greek manuscript upon which the KJV was based is wholly irrelevant. “Don’t you know that the English in the KJV is itself inspired? Who cares what some dusty old Greek manuscript says?”
