A gene duplication can increase the amount of an enzyme, and depending on the context, can cause all sorts of other changes. But even in language, duplication can add meaning. Stein's "A rose is a rose is a rose" is saying something more than just a tautology, but a play off of Shakespeare's "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet", and thousands of other romantic fancies. Again, it's about context. |
