Well, I just got the Nikkor 70-300 VR (for the reasons you mentioned) and I have to say that I'm loving it, so far. The limitations are what you would expect for the maximum aperture, it's a wee bit soft at 300, but the VR genuinely works a treat and autofocus is fast and accurate. I was delighted to get any shot at all of this extremely shy and flighty Kingfisher, handheld (and in the middle of a city!
