It seems to me that a minuscule fringe group has convinced the vast majority of the population that they are incapable of adult decisions.

Well, that's what it's all about, isn't it? Power and control thru emotional blackmail. Not "equality." I was an angry feminist like that when I was young - then a (guilty white male) friend handed me Feminism Unmodified and reading it was like aversion therapy.
