Oh I was so happy when I watched this match. Well done Ireland. I knew you had it in you!

You realise that, absent our highly-predicted screw-up against Italy (or Russia! eeeeek!!) this means Wales in a QF and possible England in the semis?

Oh, I see, that's why you're pleased.

PS: But thatnks anyway. It was marvellous to read the Oz press and blogs afterwards (snigger)

Well that thought had occurred to me, but I am actually pleased because I genuinely like to see the home nations nations do well.

As long as they're not playing England o'course. That should go without saying. THEN I am a one eyed jingoistic bastard* who hates everyone. Which is Right and As It Should Be. ;-)

Ireland played a stormer, I'm actually annoyed they don't do that all the time. There are a few players in the Irish team I think deserve some of the rewards the highest table of rugby has to offer and I think it's sheer dumb luck as much as anything that they haven't had them. Mind you, they might have hit their purple patch at the right time, so who knows, Webb Ellis Cup to Dublin this year? At least that'll madden the Aussies (good thing) and stun the All Blacks (tragic/comic).

I too was amused by the look on an Aussie colleague's face (a colleague who, 8 years ago, I won £500 from after a certain final. He also now sports an inadvisable tattoo of a certain score). I love Aussies, great people, but it is funny to see the look on their faces when they lose at sport. It's like a puppy who is trying to solve vector calculus. They're vaguely aware that something is wrong but it's totally beyond them.

I seriously doubt you'll screw up against Italy, and to do so against Russia would be the shocker of the tournament. They couldn't even beat the USA who haven't worked out they're not playing Gridiron yet and keep nipping off for a convenient ad-break every 5 minutes.

*All comedy aside, one of the things I love about rugby is the conviviality of the atmosphere. Opposing fans sit/stand together and generally comment favourably on the excellence of their team's opposition, should any such thing be evident. There is also mild to moderate piss-taking. Which is definitely a good thing.

Bye.
