In the context of AFDave's hopeless efforts to pretend he knows anything about languages, I thought it would be interesting to find out who speaks which languages around here.

For collection purposes, let's say we'll list languages you can either read or understand, if not perfectly, then at least functionally. Let's not list things we have only a smattering of.

My list:
English (native)
French
Spanish
Italian
Latin
Russian

Over to you guys...

The French and Russian aren't so much an issue, but you do not want to know what happens when you lose control of German.    :p

(And also a couple of very obscure languages that I've studied for a long time in the course of my linguistic research.)

I wouldn't claim to be "fluent" in anything other than English. I once passed an exam that allowed me to claim fluency in German - but that was some time ago. I had about 5 years of Latin, and was reasonably good at reading it, but never spoke it. Also took courses in Italian, Greek (koine), and learned a little Russian, a little Spanish, and a little (modern) Greek on my own.

American.

I would say English too, but I used to play soccer with some British guys and I couldn't understand a single word they said.  (One was from Birmingham and the other from southern Scotland.)

Edit:  And, I call it "soccer."  World Cup starts today!

English (native), and enough French to sound like a complete idiot. I had a French friend of mine exhaling beer through her nose conjugating French verbs once.

English

Spanish - I can read enough Spanish to get around when travelling, and understand simple, very slowly spoken Spanish -- the sort you never actually find.

About Portugese - I visited Portugal for a conference in 1998, and I found enough overlap with Spanish to be able to work out basic travel instructions, advisories, etc. on the trip. Diane and I spent a night in Milfontes, which apparently is a tourist spot for the Portugese. We rented a suite for the night from a fellow, though he didn't speak English and we certainly didn't speak Portugese. We managed to communicate sufficiently well anyway.

Me speak only the English. (Er, the American version of it.) What few words of Spanish (from high school) and German (from college) that are still stuck in my memory aren't nearly enough to translate anything.

I do though recall reading a BB post from a lady from Portugal who moved to N.J. She decided to bring up her kids speaking English, and not teach them Portugese unless/until they got old enough to decide such things.

Then one day she noticed that they had somehow learned how to swear in Portugese. And apparently quite well, too. :p

Oh, Drunk. Forgot about that one. I'm fluent in Drunk. It's a unique language. It's the only language where whatever you said, you regret the next day.

My friend Anna moved, at the age of 5, with her parents to Germany. For some reason, she pouted and very obstinately refused to learn German. She said she then became enraged one day, about a year after the move, when her mom asked her a question, and she replied, and afterwards realized her mom asked her in german.

There's a point. How many machine languages do we muster, too?

I'll put in for Fortran90, C++ and a smattering of Python. Mostly under UNIX/Linux environments.

Note to all respondents so far: your data will be tremendously helpful for task assignment when we take over the world. Forward the conspiracy!

Oh, if computer languages are being included here, then add C and C++ under VMS to my previous list (which was just {English}).
