The power to heal

An interesting new study from the University of Chicago (hat tip: reader Steve):
A majority of American doctors believe God or another supernatural being intervenes in patients' health, a study has found.
And nearly two in five doctors believe religion and spirituality can help prevent bad outcomes such as heart attacks, infections and even death, according to the University of Chicago nationwide survey of 2,000 physicians.
"Most physicians apply medical science while maintaining a belief that God intervenes in patients' health," Dr. Farr Curlin and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Here's the abstract.

Who needs your double blind thingies and actual empirical testing when you’ve got opinions and observer expectancy effect?

I read this in a local paper, or a science blog... It's a a story about nothing.  Briefely, if you are an MD and a believer, you think praying works.  If you don't believe in Big JuJu, then you don't.  Kind of a no-brainer.  Perfect for ID and it's minions, and/or lackeys.

BTW - We need to start a post about if we would do Michelle, as opposed to Tranny Coulter.

A majority of Americans cannot identify the nation of Israel on a world map.  According to ID logic, does that mean geographers should just accept that we don't really know where Israel is?

This is quite an over-interpretation of what the abstract says.  The abstract says that “Most physicians (56%) believed that R/S [i.e. religion/spirituality, my explanation] had much or very much influence on health …”  This does not mean that they believed that God intervened.  Rather, as it goes on in the abstract, it means that R/S helps the patients to cope and give them a positive state of mind.

I am much more inclined to accept that a patient’s positive attitude has a strong influence on his or her healing than that there is direct interference from “above.”  Where the R/S factor comes in is that it can give the patient this positive attitude or inner peace.  We already know from a controlled scientific study that outside prayer for a patient (without the patient knowing about it) does not influence the outcome of a medical condition whereas therapy involving (nonreligious) contact with the patient that establishes psychological calmness, does.
