Granddad, what did you do in the war against Darwinism:

Quote
Increasinginly I find that those with doctorates in the natural and engineering sciences are asking, “What can I do to help in the fight against Darwinism?” For some this will involve research bearing directly on Darwinian theory. But there is also another way to help. Many in the media and the public still do not know that there is scientific dissent from Darwinism. They have no idea that MANY scientists are skeptical of neo-Darwinian theory.

Well sure, you could do research if you really want.  But the exciting work is in blogging and issuing press releases!

In the comments, Sal reports proudly:

I don't think Sal gets the irony behind the Steve list.

The thing that gets me is why his targets are not bursting out in fits of laughter...they must have to deal with some seriously deluded tard as though it is normal.

Experts frequently have to endure idiocy. Maybe that predisposes them to take apparent idiocy at face value. For example, the guy who taught my PY341 class (Intro to Thermo) at one point bitched out the department secretary for sending all the crackpots his way. He was irritated that every week he had some nutcase on the phone or in his mailbox explaining how to build free-energy devices that would revolutionize the universe and overthrow all the current paradigms. Much like the Intelligent Design nuts. The department secretary told him he wasn't special-- there were lots of nuts, and she was distributing them equally around the physics faculty.

Oh ......so Demski isn't just a one off anti-gravity, zero energy, infinite wavelength, disembowled imaginary entity..... pseudoscience nutcase?

Geez I can understand your Intro to Thermo guys frustration, friggin' pods and replicants are so well disguised these days its giving good cheap clothing a bad name.
They should be given a test before they can buy a razor or get a hair cut, "Why does facial hair on the human male make it a mammal?".
If they fail they join the crowd that reminds everyone else how lucky they are.

Dembski announces the McGrath-Dennett debate on the future of atheism.  And everyone's being really sweet about it!  First, up pops DaveScot:

Real nice situation the asshats on your side have created that frightens scientists into not only not saying what they think but fearful of even of the hint of having heretical ID thoughts.

As usual, DaveScot elevates the discussion. In any case, he just called Loomis and the vast majority of evolutionary biologists cowards who are afraid to even think.  In fact, the Theory of Evolution permeates Loomis's research and teaching.

* Evolution of complex genomes from simpler ones appears to have involved duplication of individual genes and surrounding sequences followed by changes in the extra copies.
* The genome sequence shows all the proteins available to Dictyostelium as well as definitively showing which domains have been lost since Dictyostelium diverged from the line leading to metazoans.
* However, the ability to synthesize nine amino acids (Phe, Trp, Ile, Leu, Val, Lys, His, Thr, and Met) was lost in a wide variety of eukaryotes that evolved the ability to feed on other organisms.
* An expanded phylogenetic tree built from the complete predicted proteomes of 23 eukaryotes places the two amoebae in the same lineage, although the divergence is estimated to be greater than that between animals and fungi, and probably happened shortly after the Amoebozoa split from the opisthokont lineage.
* The second part of this course will focus on the evolution of whole genomes.

Yes, the man obviously lives in fear.

Along with the secret ID research lab where ex Marine Fieldmushroom 'stormin' Dave Springer is the doorman, comment cleaner and IP inspector everything is totally transparent ...in fact a completely empty vessel.

Ofro, “Go to the laboratory and provide empirical evidence that will convince everybody.”

The ID community is small compared to the research scientist community. However, the research sccientists are coming out with all sorts of evidence that cries for an ID interpretation. Do you remember those mice that had 100,000 highly conserved basepairs removed with no mesurable deleterious effects?

“Go to the laboratory” is a platitude, a brush off. While laboratory work is being done, analysis of the laboratory work of others is a hundred times more fruitful.

If anyone wanted a better statement of the parasitic nature of ID...

So, uh, is this guy telling us that the Designer put in 100,000 basepairs that had no relevance to the function of the organism? I thought they'd established that the Designer wouldn't put in DNA that wasn't used for anything? Did I miss something somewhere or is the who whatting how with huh?

Kazmer Ujvarosy makes an appearance at Orwellian Malevolence and much hilarity ensues.

Of course, he doesn't bother correcting quizzlestick's fabricated-out-of-whole-cloth claim that his article is peer-reviewed.  Instead, he favors us with a supersized sciencereligionistic word salad, and sends a fews props to quizzlestick:
Quote
By the way, Quizzlestick is displaying an exceptional understanding of this living cosmology. I still have to find a person who has comparable capacity for clear thinking.

In spite of the evidence for it, I'm having a hard time believing that Kazmer is for real.  Has anyone seen him and Lou FCD in the same place at the same time?  No?  According to my Super Premium Explanatory Filter, this proves that Kazmer was designed by Lou.

Gil: Were we programmed with such an intuition - with the ineluctable sense that our lives must have some ultimate purpose and meaning - our intuition would be of no help in deciding whether this proposition is true.

Arden - Thank you for posting to this excellent Summer Memory - It will ALWAYS be linked to my memories of 2006.  And the VERY BEST thing, is that someting equally dumb, or even dumber could erupt from him like a zit on prom night AT ANY TIME.

This guy HAS to be worth at least a PhD to someone lucky enough to get a grant to study him, and answer the questions we all would like to know the answers to, such as:
1.) Is there anyone dumber with an IQ of 15o +?
2.) How stupid can anyone person be?
3.) Can we run a cross check with his DNA and Neadertal DNA and see what, if any variation exists?
4.) What species is he?
5.) How long has he been in love with Bill Dembski?
6.) Is it True Love, or just a school boy crush?
7.) Was he really a Marine?  If so, what country?
8.) Has he ever met a donut he didn't like?
9.) Are Cheesy Poofs just a comfort food for DaveTard, or is it an obsession?
10). Was he born a moronic bully, or did he have to work at it?

GilDodgen 01/24/2007 8:57pm: The future of atheism is bleak, because humans are aware of their mortality, and are programmed with an ineluctable sense that their lives must have some ultimate purpose and meaning — otherwise, life is absurd. Despite claims to the contrary, atheism peddles nihilism as its ultimate product, and most people intuitively recognize this.

Gil: Were we programmed with such an intuition - with the ineluctable sense that our lives must have some ultimate purpose and meaning - our intuition would be of no help in deciding whether this proposition is true.

A programmed intuition is roughly as useful as a compass programmed to always tell us that we are facing north.

Arf!

We know the inerrant bible is inerrant because the inerrant bible tells us so!

True or false:

"This statement is false."

Speaking of this, I have a question - does ID predict that a purpose for these conserved basepairs will be found (i.e. they were conserved because they serve a subtle purpose), or no purpose will be found (the base pairs were "front loaded" and serve no current purpose
although they may have served a purpose in the past or future)?

There are other valid alternatives.  A common ancester of A and B would need DNA for A and B. Therefore B may inherit some DNA that was intended for a distant descendant of A (or C or D or ...) intended to be used in a very particular situation which may never actually arise.  In such cases, this DNA could be preserved indefinitely by carefully crafted information preservation mechanisms or simply be allowed to gradually degenerate into junk.  As there's a whole lot of DNA required by creatures which are not B, there could be a lot of junk. Conservative estimates vary between 0 and 100% although with over 700 of the world's best and bravest scientists mulling things over in thier spare time, that could get narrowed down very quickly.

A prediction:

Front-loading predicts that all of the so-called junk DNA is being used in a subtle way, or was used by an ancestor in the past, or could be used by a descendant in the future, or could be present because it could one day be used in a different branch of the tree of life by a totally different hypothetical creature, in some hypothetical situation beyond our understanding, or could just be accumulated junk.
