Heh - in a thread about Stephen Hawking UD regular harry says that he recently "wrote off" the scientist. Denyse seems to have had the same reaction as I did, but in replying manages to insult harry, and, by extension, the rest of the UD community:

That most papers have an author on the AE board just suggests that this is a small field.

Well, that should make it easy for some of them to be out standing in their field.

I saw what you did there.

Speaking of Plato, I'm worried about his number one fan.  Kairosflatus has been AWOL/MIA for about a month now.  I worry that something has happened to him.

Perhaps he has solved all the Carribean's problems and is taking a well deserved rest.  I rate that as unlikely.

BA77 is also MIA.  You don't suppose... Naah!  But maybe if one of them scored some meth ... Naah!  What drug dealer would be dumb enough to sell anything to BA77 OR KF?  Still, does anybody know a meth dealer with a really weird sense of humor?

I almost hate to bring this up, but perhaps KF found out that Plato enjoyed a young boy now and then?  That information could have driven him so far around the bend that he's crouching naked on an island somewhere, barking at the full moon.

The Mafiosi finally caught up with him?

He saved Montserrat by sacrificing himself to Claude, the local volcano god?

Anybody have any information here?

Mung,

For once in any thread try clarity, I implore you. When you are on the defensive you resort to word salad; OK, let’s try.

In Biology you do know ‘parsimonious’ has a particular importance? It is known as the ‘principle of parsimony.’

This means, that biological systems or parts, are usually connected or behave in the simplest, or most economic way; usually!

A huge help for evolutionary biologists when looking at systems such as blood clotting, and the immune system etc.

So, applied to help explain your silly demand to know how ‘no man in the sky’, is more parsimonious than ‘one man in the sky’, is quite easy.

You see ‘no man in the sky’ implies no supernaturalism, and thus is simpler (more parsimonious), than ‘one man in the sky.’

Mung @4, you said it is more parsimonious to believe in one man in the sky than many, you were correct. However, it is more parsimonious still to believe in no men in the sky than one.

Leave the ‘sky man’ out, and rely on nature, and then ‘biological parsimony’ is at last satisfied.

It's UD without the leaven of Denyse.

Mung is getting to be a bigger asshole with each passing day.  TSZ has gotten pretty much unreadable with Mung and phoodoo defecating multiple times in every thread.  I do wonder what causes his severe need to be such an attention whore.

Denyse O'Leary praises A.N. Wilson for his ideas on Darwin. Obviously, she is not aware of what Dembski had to say about Wilson back in 2006:

A. N. Wilson, the epitomy of English snootiness, recently fell for an elaborate prank that he could have avoided if he had drawn a design inference. Note that "Eve de Harben" doesn't exist either, and the letters in "her" name are an anagram for "Ever been had?

In addition, she seemingly doesn't remember what she had to say about Wilson back in 2005

Don’t forget how much of the abuse from Europe is motivated by envy:

In reality, the US has led the world in science for the last half century, irrespective of policies on teaching Darwinism in school systems OR the alleged incompetence of the American student.

Unable to resolve the dissonance, writers like Wilson conjure up an abysmally stupid midWesterner, whose existence allegedly explains why what they think is still true, even though the evidence is against it.

By the way, Wilson should really spend more time in North America if he wants to write about it. If he knew half as much as he thinks, he would know that the Eastern seaboard of the United States is in decline. For various reasons, industry and political power have been moving south for years.

And we all know that the United States is on the verge of collapse, don’t we?

I better not go get a coffee. I might miss the big meltdown.

Cheers, Denyse

In the absence of active moderation, any online forum will eventually degenerate into a content-free, troll-ridden cesspool.

TSZ has never had active moderation, but then it started out with a decent supply of people who really did want to argue in good faith. So it began with a kind of analog to 'founder effect' operating at first. Sadly, there has never been any serious attempt to restrict TSZ participation to people who prefer good-faith argument over trollish bullshit…

IMAO, the only interesting things about TSZ at the moment are, first, that the degeneration took as long as it has, and second, how much longer it'll be until the last good-faith-aligned participant abandons TSZ to the kooks and bigots and trolls.

Looks like the degeneration is well under way, and approaching 100% status.

I expect this particular failure would have occurred identically 50 years ago. Back then journalists were somewhat likely to know a Christian well enough to discuss the matter, but even then the TYPE of Christian who knows scriptural details wouldn’t have been anywhere near the journalist caste.

Baptists and Pentecostals know chapter and verse, and never tire of reciting chapter and verse.

Episcopalians and Catholics and Jews operate on tradition and fashion instead of scriptural text.

Journalists have never known any Baptists or Pentecostals.

While it is illegal for a man to have sex with a 14-year-old girl in many Western countries, if she is anatomically an adult, we would not usually call it "pedophilia."

I've got to object here. While it counts as sex with a minor, and isn't a good idea for reasons of mental health and such, being attracted to a sexually mature 14-yro isn't pedophilia. Ephebophilia, I guess. Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescents.

Symbols contain information. That is what makes them symbols.

If a Chinese person sends a message of Kanji characters to me my curiosity would be triggered and I would try to find out what, if any, information they contained.

What information does this contain? :

Clearly these are symbols, but what information is this string of symbols carrying?

What about this sentence:

Harry is on fire.

What information is that string of symbols carrying?
i wanna know how much CSI is in that string.

Larry @8 said IDists were idiots. This brought out understandable anger, but look at this post’s title:

‘Well, we don’t hear from Britt toffs everyday: Darwin was a fraud!’

ID is desperate to be taken seriously, or even to be acknowledged anywhere, outside of its own very insular crowd.

Now the question; How can any independent, unbiased individual, who is largely uninterested in the attempts of ID to be recognised anywhere, read this title and not say, ‘these people are less than honest in their claim to be scientifically centred.’?

NEWS’s headings, and her titles are always (not occsionally or sometimes), wildly emotional, dripping with contempt, and utterly indefensible in scientific legitimacy.

If ID has any illusions, to be taken seriously, as other than what it is, ‘creationism’, it must at some time create one, just one, scientific title worthy of the name. (This does not mean taking current research in respected institutions, and saying, ‘Look! That’s really complicated, it must be design!)

These constant childish, mildly dislodged, ranting efforts are entertaining sure, but as ways for the public to enter the realm of ID, they are not helpful at all.

ET, thanks for your efforts to ‘witness’ for me, spare your efforts, pray for the world instead, it will be just as effective.

News: What have progressives ever done for us?

Peasant: well, they did end slavery.

News: well, of course. But other than ending slavery, what have they ever done for us?

Peasant: They got government to declare that women were persons and granted them the vote.

News: OK. But other than ending slavery and the vote for women, what have progressives ever done for us?

Peasant: They did end child labour.

Peasant #2: And they did end debtor’s prison.

Peasant #3: And they pushed for laws that would penalize employers for unsafe work conditions.

News: Well, that all goes without saying. But other than ending slavery, giving women the vote, ending child labour, got rid of debtor’s prison and were responsible for safe working conditions. But other than this, what have progressives ever done for us?

Peasant: Don’t forget about health care and employment insurance.

Peasant #2: Yah. Do you remember what it was like when your child used to die of a simple infection because you couldn’t afford to go to a doctor?

Peasant: And we can’t forget about.. .

News: meeting ajourned.
