It seems to have started with a disagreement between Abbie and PZ about the politics of ScienceBlogs, then quickly deteriorated to Elevatorgate Revisited. I didn't read the whole thing, from what I gathered Abbie seems to think the incident was not as alarming as others judged it to be and to have allowed really nasty comments about women on her blog.

For the record: I'd feel incomfortable, too, if I were trapped in an elevator with a guy who "invites me for a coffee" to his room.

In one sense the "slime pit" threads over on ERV's blog are kinda useful. It attracts all the like minded MRAs and misogynists into one convenient pile and seems pretty effective at keeping them away from other more serious venues.

In order to make any sense, and there is precious little to be made IMO, of the whole "elevatorgate" fiasco one would have to read literally hundreds if not thousands of posts and blogs in a specific sequence. Perhaps someone somewhere has made a good summary timeline of the events. The best I have seen is here. which has links to other summaries and relevant articles.

I guess NatGeo simply wants Abbie to flush out the slime pit and not create any new ones.

I'm not sure if everyone can agree with that. Seeing how some of the supposed free thought people followed UDs tactics of editing and censoring comments, along with quote mining and pre-emptive banning...I think some might have a higher opinion of UD than others.

The main complaint seems to be that she let misogynist comments be uncensored on her blog, sometimes even agreeing with commenters. Even people who agree with him about a lot of things (like me) get attacked if I don't say things vociferously enough.

it's an outlet for all those people who never had one before. I'd love to do an experiment and see just how far most of the commentors are willing to go with him. Ask PZ to put up a not-out-of-character style, but mostly out-of-character post and see who still follows him or who calls bullshit.

Again, this is based entirely on my own experiences there, not the Abbie thing or anything else.
