But the usual usage could almost be seen as an acronym for 'in like kind'.  The phrase 'of that ilk' implies 'coincidence of name and estate', which explains its usage in Scottish and Irish parliament and heraldry. Defined as 'a kind of person', synonymous with 'like'.
