Equally startling is that these genes were discovered in what had been considered “junk” DNA, non-functioning strings of repetitive DNA that do not seem to do anything.
[...]
Scientists have long assumed new genes could only evolve from duplicated or rearranged versions of preexisting genes, passed on by our ancestors, Dr McLysaght said. But then scientists began to discover a very few novel genes in species such as flies and yeasts that arose from apparently inactive junk DNA.

I, for one, welcome our new junk DNA overlords.

Honestly, you heathens will believe anything!

Aoife is also quite the cutie...she's in front here:

Darwin Day!

I was seeing if she had a preprint or anything of that paper up and got all sexcited when I saw a .pdf icon next to the title-- but, alas, it was not to be.

I made do with ogling pics of her and other lab denizens here http://www.gen.tcd.ie/molevol/

Sex and the Single Scientist!  Loved that book!

The one on the right in the first picture is also foxy, although she seems to get her sweater sense from Dembski.  But on her, it looks good!

Both of these pictures will join my growing selection of science porn.

The lady scientist in front (Aoife?) had a brief soundbite/interview on the splendid BBC last night (Radio 4, no less!).

Sounds as good as she looks - mind you, I do get  a bit sweaty hearing pretty women speaking with an Irish accent.

Potential new ID recruit?  The wife of the Japanese Prime Minister elect says, "While my body was asleep, I think my soul rode on a triangular-shaped UFO and went to Venus," she explains in the tome she published last year. "It was a very beautiful place, and it was very green."

She also knew Tom Cruise in a former incarnation - when he was Japanese.

I think she'd make a great Discovery Institute Fellow.  I wonder how she feels about Irreducible Complexity?  HIV Denial?  Has she ever expressed an interest in the Baylor Cafeteria?  I wonder what her position is on Obama's birth certificate?  I'm looking for a picture of her in a sweater, talking about Jesus with Denyse O'Leary and Michelle Bachmann.

In closing, I would like to thank kf for demonstrating that Weasel performs much better than a random search, and that mutation and selection can, cumulatively, produce results that appear directed/designed. That was, after all, CRD’s only point.
I would also like to thank him for highlighting the sloppy writing seen in section E of the D&M paper. If someone as smart as kf did not notice the elision from Partitioned to Deterministic searches on pages 1055 – 1056, there is little hope that typical readers will be able to spot that eqn22 CANNOT describe a search that has generational champions, and therefore it CANNOT describe Weasel (irrespective of pseudo-quasi-implicit-latching).

*swoon!*

I have some questions about this book:

Does it have any actual pictures of “The Signature in the Cell”?

What cells have “The Signature in the Cell”?

Whose signature is “The Signature in the Cell”?

When was “The Signature in the Cell” first signed?

Does each new cell require a new signature?

Are all the signatures the same? If not, how are they different, and why?

Megan,

Does you mommy know you are on the computer?

the correct response is of course:

"No, I'm on YOUR mom('s)"

But not really as funny for a Megan, one supposes.

Paul,

Thank you for pointing out the obvious bias, prejudice and fascist Darwinistas who refuse to participate in open discussions and reviews.

Last time an ID paper was published, the Darwinian Fascist took apart Dr Sternberg at the Smithsonian and treated him with scorn and ridicule.

Showing they are little more than monkeys. They cannot think for themselves or lift themselves up high enough among the dogmatic fascism that is Darwinism today.

Scientific American has been blatantly atheist.

LOL…. what a bunch of barking buffoons, but keep on living in your little world of “holocaust denial.”

pssst hey bill I thought you just published an ID paper bwahhahahahaha

meanwhile Shawnboy is offering unsolicited suggestions

In the mean time, my suggestion would be to search around for Stephen C. Meyer debates. He’s presented the arguments from Signature in the Cell in many of them. I’ve yet to find anything I would call a significant rebuttal of Meyer’s work, but I have a hunch my standards are slightly higher than your own.

hahahaha that's the argument for ID from UD in a nutshell.  "any fool can see it, but you can't because you are an atheist with no objective standards"

TARD

ETA  UD has just become more and more of an old fashioned atheist witch hunt lately.  what a sack of slack

DNA_Jock, good observation @ 286. It also highlights the inaccuracy of referring to active info as a measure of problem-specific information. A search without replacement is based on the same problem-specific information as a search with replacement, and yet the active information measure of the former is higher. The active information measure is a function not only of the information available, but also of the way that information is used.

Clive lays out his thoughts on "active information":

Quote
A tautology is true by definition, like saying that it’s either raining outside, or it’s not; it has to be true for all values of its variables, meaning, that all values have been exhausted and there is no new information being given. This is not the case when citing active information that produces a refined search better than random, for not all of the variables have been exhausted. There is new information being given. It is tantamount to saying that, to use your analogy, the car is moving, which conveys that it is not still. If we say that the car is either moving or not, then it is a tautology, for no information at all is given. Thus, your question to Barry is a non sequitur.

Linky My bold.

I was thinking something very similar. That 1k post mark will roll around any time now and then we'll have to pull Steve Story away from his chewin' baccy, crazy triathlon training, suspicious booze combos and molesting wild animals (but not squirrels, that's Deadman's dept) to start a third.

Either that or we'll have to stop looking at UD forever and ever.

Wait, does that mean that via the Copenhagen interpretation it will cease to exist?

Sounds like the UD1K party from the end of the old thread. Perhaps we need someone other than ras to plan the festivities? Cause if it's squirrels again, I'm going to the movies instead.

Darwinism and Alchemy
GilDodgen

The recent brouhaha concerning Mike Behe at BloggingHeads got me to thinking. (I do that from time to time.)

I finally figured out why the incensed Darwinists who resigned from BH did so: They are the equivalent of alchemists who have been confronted with knowledge about the nature of the nucleus of the atom.

Alchemists thought that they might be able to turn lead into gold through chemistry. (After all, lead is heavy and dense, and gold is too.) Darwinists propose that inanimate matter — coupled with the laws of chance, chemistry, etc. — can produce information-processing systems of incredible sophistication.

The alchemist and the Darwinist have been seduced into pursuing analogous rainbows, based on a fundamental misunderstanding about how things work.

Chemistry will never turn lead into gold, because the nucleus of the atom must be altered to achieve that goal. Chemistry can only affect the bonding of atoms through the interaction of the electrons orbiting the nucleus. Alchemists were unaware of this fact, and thus their dream was unattainable in principle.

Chemistry, chance, and natural selection will never turn matter into information-processing systems, because design is required. The dream of the Darwinist is unattainable in principle — thus his hostility and desperation.

frill, you forgot that the alchemists are "evil" and "without an objective basis for their morals"

Not to mention that with a little knowledge of "nuclear chemistry", we figured out how to make gold from lead!
So Frill, whose the "alchemist" now, those pursuing the detailed knowledge of the inner workings of the cell, or those who sit back and say "It's too complicated, goddidit!"

It would cost much more to make gold than to dig for it.

Back in my youth, our freshman chemistry class did a lab that made lots of silver chloride. I got the TAs to save it up for me, and as I was a potter, I burned the load in my kiln. The released chlorine eventually made hydrochloric acid and rained out. I was down wind. Silver was about $2.60 an ounce as I recall. I didn't make enough to bother the next years TAs.
