Louis,

Being a member of the British Empire, you had damn well better be supporting me.  I realize that the car manufacturers were themselves crap, the potential of the automobiles should still live one (Moss Motorsports be praised).

Anyone want to share the worst car they ever owned?

Mine was the Renault Alliance.

A joint venture between AMC and the French. In hindsight, what the hell was I thinking?

My only fond memory of it was that the heater was really good. I was in Urbana-Champaign at the time, so that helped stave off the effects of frigid blasts of winter winds blowing over a thousand miles of prairie.

If you try to go to my blog, let me know if you were successful and what you think.  Thanks ahead of time.  Sorry for the confusion and/or distraction.

Toss up between a pair of '76 Ford LTDs (a four-door that was given to us by my in-laws in '88 and a two-door that I bought for parts the next year for $25), and a pair of Pontiac Grand Ams my wife owned when we reconciled in '02 (a 1995 with severe electrical problems from the day she bought it brand new, and a 2000 with exactly the same electrical problems from the day she bought it brand new).

I'll never own another American car.  (Though one of the best cars I've ever owned was a '74 suburban I bought around 1990 for $800 that lasted for years, took a beating on the farm, moved us twice and friends at least four times, and the only issue it ever gave me before my wife made me get rid of "Big Ugly" was that the original alternator left me on the side of the highway around '94.)

I drive a black '03 Hyundai XG350L now,

and my wife a silver '05 Hyundai Tuscon.

Couldn't be happier with either of them.

Good car? Bad car? All depends on what you want from a car.

My current vehicle has gone 0 miles to 107,150 miles needing the following mechanical repairs:

- 1 tie rod (at 105,000 miles)
- 1 ball joint/lower control arm (at 84,000 miles)
- 1 tensioner pulley for serpentine belt; new belt.
- 1 strap to suspend muffler ($16)
- 1 battery (terminal broke, a rampant Delco problem).
- 1 window crank handle ($9)

Wear items and maintenance:

- 2 brake refurbs
- 1 set of tires (originals lasted 84,000 miles)
- 2 sets of plugs, 1 coolant flush, timely tire rotations, oil changes every 3 - 4,000 miles, air filter from time to time, etc.

I get 39 mpg on highway, crisp handling, 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. Not a rocket, but it gets there obligingly. With the new set of plugs I just dropped in and recent tightening of the front end it runs and handles like new.

American car. 5-speed stick (which I prefer). The thing cost ~ $13,500 new.

I've never owned a car, though I've had a license for close to 8 years. I don't know if it's healthy or stupid.

Worst car EVAR?

1991 Taurus wagon, purchased new. Ate tires left and right, endless front-end problems, transmission completely hosed at 72,000 miles*, subframe bolts rusted out, air conditioning failed, and we were quoted $700 to get pencils out of the dash, having fallen into the ventilation and jammed the heater controls.

*Due to well known, well documented design flaw. Ford's response:

Dear valued customer,

Drop dead.

Sincerely,

Ford Motor Company

Mine was a hand-me-down 1980 Dodge Mirada.  Originally owned by a great-aunt, dumped on my brother who replaced its putty grey hue with a more attractive graphite color.  Sadly, paint could not fix the mechanical issues inherent in most 1980's era 'Merican cars.

I have such fond memories of hanging out of the passenger side window and hand-working the windshield wipers during a heavy downpour while my brother drove our motley crew down the interstate...

Oh, my daily driver car is 2007 Honda Accord 4 banger.  SRT8 is for weekend fun when I'm too much a wimp to ride my motorcycle in the rain.  Fast is FUN!!

I've owned, in order

1988 Ford LTD
1984 Ford F-150
1988 Porsche 944
1991 Nissan 240sx
2000 Nissan Sentra

The Fords were junk, but I'll always miss the F-150. The Porsche was nice but retardedly expensive. I spent $1600 just to replace the clutch one time. The 240 was on its last legs but I was a poor student at the time. I kept a hammer behind the seat to use on the starter when it wouldn't turn, which was about 20% of the time. The Sentra was nice.

Right now I'm enjoying not having a car. I live in Carrboro/Chapel Hill, and the bus and taxis get me around fine. Next week I'm moving to BFE Florida for about 6-8 mos (don't ask) and then I'll probably be moving to the Pacific Northwest. Might need a car then. But I hear Portland has an excellent pub trans system.

how odd.
my worst car was a '91 taurus sedan.
tranny hosed at 62k.  power train warranty was for 60k.
ford had almost the same response to my issue but they did offer to discount another taurus $1,000 more than the dealer could do.  riiiiight.  why would i want another turd?

couldn't afford to ditch the car so i put a aamco lifetime warranty transmission in it.

before i finally sold it, it had 5 more transmissions put in it.

the starter casing fell apart and jammed the flywheel.  at speed.
left front disk brake assembly disintegrated and jammed the wheel.
electrical system began to fail and the windows would sometimes work and sometimes not...

p.o.s.

i'll NEVER own another ford.
have two nissans that i'm very happy with.  '97 quest and an '06 frontier 4 door.  my last nissan truck made it 19 years.
i'm getting 22.5mpg in town (six speed manual transmission) and about 26 on the road.
not bad for a 4-door pickemup truck that'll tow 6300lbs.

My dream vehicle is U.S.-made.  I wonder if you Brits have anything to compare?  :)  Anyways:

Lessee, a coupla extra gas tanks, livewell, two Minnkotas, (one fore, one aft) heavy-duty anchor, rod-holders, recess for keg, and built-in cooler and I'd be all set to catch some really big northerns!!  or walleyes.

QUAAAAAACCCCKKKK!!

IIRC, the Taurus transmission (which already had problems) was redesigned for 1991 for increased computer control. That required a redesign of the valve body, with it's maze of little twisty passages, all alike. An error was made in the design of the gasket that sealed the valve body such that a portion of the gasket was exposed to the flowing hydraulics. The exposed portion eventually broke loose (after years of use) - with results that depended upon the location of the break and the pathway followed by the gasket fragments. Sometimes the tranny would refuse to shift and was retrievable. At others the already inadequate lubrication of the planetary gears was further impaired and the gears were shredded. (<- I know next to nothing about how these things work, so can't really say if this story makes any sense.)

What I do know is that my wife was driving on the highway a 3:30 in the morning with my then two small children and her elderly mother when this occurred. She pulled into a rest area and the transmission downshifted into zero gear as she pulled into a parking space. I'm assuming that the planetaries aren't involved when cruising at highway speed so she kept moving until that final stop.

Consumer Reports identified that Ford transmissions of that year were failing at 4x the rate of other auto-trannys of that year. Ford acknowledged the problem by extending the warranty on the transmission to 60,000 miles.

Which did squat for me.
