Speaking of Tasmanian devils, Steve Irwin had one on a rerun of his show this morning. No whirlwind, but it's a good thing he had thick boots.

Funny you should put it that way. A few years ago my family was in South Africa and we went to visit a raptor and cheetah rehab center called Spiers. I did one of those touristy things of getting into one of the paddocks to pet the adolescent cheetahs. Of course the guide was very strict about where we were allowed to pet and when we had to move and all that and most of us thought it was a lot of over-precaution. That is, until we took a good look at her ankles and calves...Yikes!

Is AP still hosting his show. Haven't watched the channel, in a while.

My kid got a full ride art scholarship to Washburn University here in Kansas.  Wooooohoooooo!!!!  He was accepted to Ringling in Florida as well which is an excellent art university. The exposure is great at that particular school in regard to future jobs, etc., but the cost is f'ing astronomical.

Just had to share since I was asking so many questions about colleges several months ago.

So exciting...will carry over each of the 4 years he attends if he keeps his grades up.  Then he will go on to another institute for his MFA.  His tentative goal atm is to become a university art professor. :)  @proudmama

Looking something up on an old-ish thread, I noticed that some pics don't show anymore.

May I recommend Photobucket? They offer an incredible amount of free storage.

If this were the hoppin' place it was 5 years ago I'd be certain to get an answer, but I'm still hopeful there's a chemist out there who can help.

I drink 1/2 gallon of distilled water every day. Three reasons--I work out most days of the week (circuit training/HIIT), I drink way too much vodka, and my dad started getting kidney stones when he was 20.

I've gotten drastically healthier. Me 6 years ago:

me now:

And I've done a lot of research about diet, and made a lot of improvements. My diet is now way more caesar salad and steamed veggies, and way less pizza and captain crunch :-) . Accordingly, I'd like to switch to green tea from distilled because of the good polyphenols. But tea has lots of oxalate, which might be indicated in kidney stones. So I'm wondering--might there be a way to make green tea, and then precipitate out the oxalate before drinking it? Maybe adding powdered calcium or magnesium or something? Anybody got any suggestions?

Yeah, I'm doing that. And creatine. I'm just wondering about the oxalate thing. Sucks about fresh spinach. I can eat fresh spinach salad all day long. But I don't because of the oxalate.

That is a lot of distilled water.

Add acids like vit. C, and/or carbonated drinks. My favorite is beer. It dissolves apatite. (tooth enamel and kidney stones are more apatite than calcite). It takes a lot of water to process ethanol. Cut back on vodka and distilled water.

I can't help with the oxalate thing, but I remember you in 2008 looking more like your "after" picture than your "before" picture. You made rapid progress once you decided on a change.

Yeah, I lost 30 lbs in the year before you saw me in Chapel Hill, and about 20 more since. My waist has gone from a 40 to a 33. Just mostly by avoiding refined flour and especially liquid sugars of any kind, and cutting my vodka consumption in half.

Liquid sugar is really, really unhealthy, we're learning. A lot of the obesity problem in america results from the normalization of soda. An 8-oz coke was a once-a-week treat 50 years ago, and a 32-oz mountain dew is now considered part of a normal meal. A 'medium' soft drink I got from I think Hardees 6 months ago wouldn't fit in my car's cupholder. I remember reading, a few years ago, of a Coke exec's actual desire to have a Coke faucet in everyone's kitchen sink. That's insanity.

I still have the occasional soda, cookie, piece of pizza, bowl of farfalle with marinara, but they're occasional, not daily. If you have easy access to a grocery store, which many people don't, and learn some really rudimentary kitchen techniques, it's not hard to eat healthy. Stir-fry veggies with good spices and a little meat for flavor can be much more enjoyable then anything taco bell or mcdonalds has to offer.

I'm using, as inspiration, the fact that this guy is 9 years older than me:

so there's still hope. :-)

One of the best things about circuit training is it can take as little as 15 minutes, there's no monotony if you mix it up all the time, unlike 5-mile jogs, and even though it kicks your ass, you actually feel high for hours afterward. I've even thought about writing a small computer program that randomly picks 5-10 exercises from a list of 30, so that I never get the same workout twice.

And while I am really coming to believe that technology-enabled ecological catastrophe is going to decimate modern civilization within the century, and am kind of resigned to it, I have finally switched to sustainable, humane sources of chicken.

Spend any time exploring the industrial production of chicken, and you'll come away horrified.

I'm thinking about starting a group blog on the subject of just how fucked the human race is. It would have to be a group blog, because successful blogs typically require 6+ posts a day to collect an active community, and I doubt I'm capable of more than 1 or 2 substantial posts a day. If anyone has any ideas, comment here or email me at my name at gmail.

I'm finding contradictory info on white tea. Some sources say all teas have a fair chunk of oxalate, some say white has very little compared to black....

and thanks!

the improved health has mostly been painless, but there are a few unpleasantries, such as my occasional breakfast of

1/4 cup creatine
1/4 cup whey protein
1/4 cup metamucil
1 raw egg
all mixed up in 8 oz of whole milk or an Ensure.

It's gross, but it goes down quick. And in 2 mins you've got your creatine, protein, fiber, fats, vitamins, and a moderate amount of carbs.

In general, though, if you study and learn a few things, eating well is at least as tasty as Doritos, pizza, and Coke.

In other news, I just transplanted 6 black krim tomato, 2 cilantro, 2 jalapeno, and 2 basil seedlings into a raised bed of 50/50 topsoil and composted manure. Here's hoping they do better than last year...
