DaveScot on UD today:

Quote

Every individual article at Panda’s Thumb has a trackback URL at the top. None of them work.

Try one: http://degas.fdisk.net/cgi-bin/mt/mt-tb.cgi/2012

Every article there has ZERO trackbacks. This has been brought to their attention but ignored. It makes me wonder if the broken trackback URLs are there just to further the sham of it being an open forum. Here we are honest and open about moderation. Our comment box is headlined by a bold lettered statement that comments are moderated. Trackbacks are also moderated. Too bad everyone can’t be as honest.

Trying this trackback, as Dave suggests, leads to an error message:

Quote

Trackback pings must use HTTP POST

The reason this message comes up can be understood by reading the trackback specifications (here for example):

Quote

To send a ping, the client sends an HTTP POST request to the TrackBack Ping URL. The client MUST send a Content-Type HTTP header, with the content type set to application/x-www-form-urlencoded. The client SHOULD include the character encoding of the content being sent (title, excerpt, and weblog name) in the charset attribute of the Content-Type header.

Just clicking on a trackback link gets you an error message.

(Also, several of the posts on PT DO have trackbacks).

Dave and a commenter go on to excoriate Wesley Elsberry for his lack of computer skills. As DS puts it:

Quote

One thing’s for sure, I’ve forgotten more than he ever knew.

If you posted this on Official Uncommon Pissant Discussion thread, you could dilute the babbling of JAD a little bit.

That's hilarious. I understand what "HTTP POST" means (and GET, too), therefore my computer skills are lacking. Whee.

I sent a trackback from my personal weblog (which runs WordPress 1.5; UD runs WordPress 2.x) to PT earlier just to check things out. It showed up in fine form.

Who is it, again, who has the problem?

They probably don't know what to do right now. If they delete the post, they know we keep copies now and will revel in it. And they were so pissy and rude that they can't say they were wrong. My guess is they'll attach an update saying something critical about the implementation.

One thing is for sure--somebody in the last ten hours has noticed the obvious error, tried to correct them in the comment section, and been deleted. Probably several somebodies.

Trackback URLs Broken at Panda’s Thumb

Miracles DO happen. Wesley claims he didn’t change anything but trackbacks all of a sudden started appearing. It’s a miracle! ;-)

If the reader is not a complete idiot, he will note that PT trackbacks were obviously working fine yesterday, for instance here: http://www.pandasthumb.org/archives/2006/02/ohio_news_1.html

DaveScot now credits miraculous intervention.

Oh, and the orginal post has been scrubbed. Of course.

Post 817 on Uncommon Descent, where DaveScot made these erroneous comments about how trackbacks worked, is no more.

I guess all I can say is that I'm glad of the stuff that I learned that I do remember. And for the rest, like evanescent screeds at UD, there's the Mozilla Archive Format plugin, which saves a snapshot of a page, with graphics, in a single file.

For things that don't go up or down in less than a day, one can subscribe to any RSS feed by email for free via the FeedBlitz service. Prompter service can be had for $$ from them, too.

I just love the title of this thread.

Kinda like "ignorant and proud!"

So apropriate to the idiot's actions since taking over at UD. Truly a "parade of ignorance", with the ticker tape shower thrown in.
