I looked through it briefly & didn't see any reason why the paper would be controversial (unless there are issues around access to the fossil), but this isn't my area of work so I could easily miss something.

It's been a long time since I read the rules on naming, but there is one on publishing in an appropriate, reasonably-well-distributed, journal.

There were people, in the XIXth Century, who heard about discoveries, and quickly published in their personal, obscure, journals in order to get priority.

This doesn't appear to be such a case, but ....

So the article ( http://bio-complexity.org/ojs.........2018.1 ) reads largely like a standard "new species" paper, even saying that the fossil is in beds that represent a marine deltaic environment 191 m.y. ago, except (a) the holotype for now resides in a private collection and lacks a collection number*, and (b) one leetle tiny section of text right near the end that says "In any case the high degree of homplasy shows that the overall pattern of similarity is very incongruent and does not readily align with a hierarchical system required by evolutionary classification.  While surprising from the perspective of common ancestry, such incongruences would not be surprising from the perspective of common design.  To avoid a dilemma here, I recommend basing classification on maximum similarity rather than assumed common descent."

Well, that explains why it didn't get published in a more traditional venue.

*Re Bob O'H's comment, the ICZN recommends but does not require that holotypes be in secure collections where the specimens are available for study.  These days more researchers are refusing to name holotypes that do not meet this recommendation, but practice varies.

I'm not a specialist in insects, so I have no idea whether his details and interpretations are valid, but just how the heck does he think cladistics works anyway, if not by mathematical evaluation of similarity?

My diagnosis of a crowd of people who might vaguely remind one of  Jeremy Shapiro: Those who cannot deal with a fact base often build an elaborate drama around why it doesn’t really exist or else doesn’t mean what it means, conscripting key players into unfamiliar roles and generalizing about the rest.

Dense does have a point:

Quote
Don’t trust the court system you pay taxes for to decide against the continuing Darwin imposture; they have every reason to decide for it – not because it is true but because the idea that there is no design, no responsibility, and no free will makes your local tax burdens’ lives a lot easier. They can force you to support them while they do nothing of consequence.

And they may even be doing something that harms you. What if they are persecuting a local white coat who is actually developing useful treatments, but he refuses to affirm Darwinism as true? So they run him out of town.

Quite the drama, allowing her to avoid the fact base.  Making up a lie about a scientist being run out of town for refusing to affirm that "Darwinism" is true.  But she said "may."  Oh yeah, a weasel word to cover completely made-up bullshit.

I'm glad she's coming to some self-awareness.  Ha.  It's really projection without end.

Judges are going to rule against creationism so that they can continue to wastefully tax you and "run out of town" creationist scientists?

Speaking of dense, our resident potty-mouthed chowder-head has been awfully quiet since his last spanking.

Is anyone marking his cycles on a calendar?  Maybe it's a medication thing.

He's still posting hot and heavy as "ET" at the Dense Place.

Pretty predictable actually.  Whenever his ass gets too sore from the royal reaming he's getting he retreats to the IDiot Fortress Of Solitude and kisses up to KF for while.  At least until the feeling returns.   :)

He actually had his show kicked off a Christian TV network because he was incapable of abiding by their code of ethics. If I remember correctly, it was the “I will not knowingly lie” that he had a problem with.
