Kansans (or citizens of other geopolitical entities) who want to help maintain reasonableness can hear David Quammen (author of The Song of the Dodo and The Reluctant Mr. Darwin as well as other books) next week at Kansas State University. He will be speaking about Darwin's life, and probably reading from The Reluctant Mr. Darwin. I've read that book, and recommended it to lots of others, so I'm looking forward to it. Admission is free and the public is invited.

March 25, 2009. 7 PM in Alumni Center Ballroom. The alumni center (map below) is on Anderson Avenue, just south of the old Memorial Stadium and just west of the construction site for a new parking garage (located south of the KSU Student Union)

Yep, it is the old football stadium, now used for soccer games, rugby matches, lacrosse matches, Ultimate Frisbee games, and general ogling of the opposite sex while lounging in the stands during the aforementioned competitions.

The football team plays its games in another stadium north of campus.

Somehow, FTK got her own newspaper column and uses it to ponder how wonderful it would be if America were run by simple country folk.

But at least we now know that if Palin had been elected in November, she would have saved everyone's 401K's last year.

It's also fascinating that the writer never once mentions McCain.

Palin, as VP, would have overseen NASA. I will regret to my dying day never having the opportunity to witness that. :p

More excitement next week for reasonable Kansans.

On Thursday, April 9 2009, Dr. Kenneth Miller, Brown University, will speak on evolution and intelligent design. 7 p.m., West Ballroom, K-State Student Union, Manhattan KS. Sponsored by the Center for the Understanding of Origins.

Upcoming on Tuesday April 14, 2009 (time and place TBA) will be a lecture by Dr. Robert J. Richards, University of Chicago historian and philosopher and author of several books, including A Tragic Sense of Life, a recent biography of Ernst Haeckel. Sponsored by the KSU chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

I just had a nice visit with Ken Miller, and was able to show him our innovative studio-format introductory biology class. He has a busy schedule for the rest of the day, including a radio interview, and then his lecture tonight.

Thursday, April 9 2009, Dr. Kenneth Miller, Brown University, will talk about "Is Evolution Only a Theory? America's Continuing Struggle with Darwin, God, and Design". 7 p.m., West Ballroom, K-State Student Union, Manhattan KS. Sponsored by the Center for the Understanding of Origins.

Is there, or should there be, a thread dedicated to announcements of talks being given by various luminaries? I just noticed that Richard Lenski will be speaking at UC Berkeley on April 30. It's a departmental talk - i.e not geared for general audiences - but that doesn't mean interested community members could not attend. I'm thinking that Andrew Schlafly will not come up,yet it should be a very interesting talk nonetheless, and people who read this board and live nearby may wish to come hear it.

Good to meet you and Jeremy too, CS.

I thought I was kidding about the snow!  Did you run into snow on the way west?  We just had cold rain here, and I thought that was the forecast for most of the state.

On another note, I think it is a good idea to start a thread dedicated to lectures and other events that AtBCer's might want to attend if they hear about them in advance. Putting them on the BW just means that we would have to wade through all those tedious conversations about Mornington Crescent!

Good lord no! Where would the fun be in that? The outraged cries from Arden and Carlson (i.e people who don't understand the rules) only make the outwitting of people unaware of Crabbit's rule more entertaining. It is enough that the denziens of AtBC quake in fear that the possibility of Mornington Crescent may happen ANYWHERE at ANYTIME (dunh dunh daaaaaaaaaaah...Mwah ha ha! Mwah ha ha! Mwah ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaa!). Oh yes, we of the Revolutionary Arm of the People's Army of Mornington Crescent will bring the fight to the people. Oh yes. All who stand in our way be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

But enough derailerisation. This thread is making me wish I was in the US so I could go to all these fascinating talks. I'll have to scope things out here in the UK (something I've not done for a while) and do my duty.

Hey, I just found out Mornington Crescent station was in Camden (we french and our knowledge of english geography...)

Anyway, i played there in 2007 at the Dingwall. I really enjoyed this part of Camden, although it looks a bit like Disneyworld (except the extras are dressed a bit weirder than your average Mickey Mouse).

And I agree with Louis about missing out on those fine lectures. I wish Dr Miller or Dr Dawkins would come to France someday...

News flash, I want to know *how* and *why* common descent supposedly proved to be better in terms of explaining differences & similarities, as well as in making predictions that have been verified by experiment.  I want to know *everything*, and by God, I'll keep asking questions until they're answered to my satisfaction.  I *sure* hope that your students question you further when you give pat answers like that that say absolutely nothing.

Common descent appears to explain why every living thing ever is in a nested hierarchy.
monophyletic taxon — a grouping that includes all descendants, living and/or extinct, known and unknown, of an inferred common ancestor.

Here's a great link that explains really everything you might need to know right now

What is evolution and how does it work?
And look, they even "admit" it's not perfect

Quote
The tree is supported by many lines of evidence, but it is probably not flawless. Scientists constantly reevaluate hypotheses and compare them to new evidence. As scientists gather even more data, they may revise these particular hypotheses, rearranging some of the branches on the tree. For example, evidence discovered in the last 50 years suggests that birds are dinosaurs, which required adjustment to several "vertebrate twigs."

However I think FTK you would be most intested in this section entitled

Quote
Has the explosion of phylogenetic research confirmed or overturned our ideas on relationships? The answer is: both!

Tree of Life - Surprises
Especially this

Quote
Phylogenetic studies are also uncovering totally unexpected relationships. This is especially true for microorganisms, where little visible structural evidence is available. Here, DNA sequences are providing data that are fundamentally changing our understanding of relationships.

As it appears to me that your question is answered there - if it seems to you that common descent can make sense of all this then can common design also make sense of the data?

On that same page they observe

Quote
We have also discovered that fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants, and that within the animals the segmented worms (annelids) are more closely related to the unsegmented molluscs (snails, clams and squids) than they are to segmented arthropods (spiders, lobsters, millipedes and insects).

Does common design predict that fungi are more closely related to animals then to plants?

Can common design explain the patterns shown at the links above and the image below?

A more mathematical approach is shown here
http://plus.maths.org/issue46/features/phylogenetics/index.html
where they conclude

Quote
Phylogenetics pushes the boundaries of known mathematics and more problems are sure to follow. Scientists are starting to think that Darwin's binary rooted tree may not be the best picture to have in mind. Certain species can hybridise and some bacteria can transfer genes directly from individual to individual. It may therefore be better to use more general graph theoretical objects, networks, rather than trees. Even if you do accept that evolution progresses in a largely tree-like fashion this is a useful approach.

It seems to me that given all the ways of visualising the data (and yet more data is being produced every day) then "common design" would stick out like a sore thumb - it would not follow the pattern so far observed. It would be obvious that something was different.

This tree contains 3,000 species representing the lineages of some 30,000 flowering plants

http://www.peabody.yale.edu/exhibits/treeoflife/challenge.html
FTK, would it look like that if common design was true? What would be different? If common design was true why would everything appear to branch? Would it not just be like  straight spokes on a wheel?

I PM'd the link to the post above to FTK back in 2007 and it said

Quote
Thank you.  That post was very informative.  I'm enjoying reading the links at the moment.

Now that you've had 3+ years to digest the material, I ask you again.
