Any particular reason for the red-bating? Are you still concerned that the CPUSA might try to take over the country?

No, I am not concerned about that at all. Polls indicate only 9% of Americans believe in evolution and most of them are effete cowards who couldn't take over a wet paper bag. There is no chance of a communist takeover in this country. In America, communists are an endangered species that exist only in zoos like Harvard and Berkely. America's Christian taxpayers care for you like any good zookeeper; we just don't want you animals to determine what our children learn in our schools. Che Guevera, Lenin?--Chomsky, Gould, etc., much less their pathetic disciples who run this message board don't even come close.

And surely you're not going to claim that the Soviet Union was a haven for evolutionists...

Darwinism is the intellectual precursor to Marxism. Without it Marxism could not exist. It is an uncitical devotion to the works of Darwin that caused Lysenkoism to be adopted. Lysenkoism is just applied Darwinism. It was the Christian monk Gregor Mendel, not the atheistic philosopher Darwin who really discovered genetics, and this is what Lysenko objected to. Yes, evolutionists had free reign in the Soviet Union, while true scientists were sent to the Gulag.

First of all, 50% of Americans accept evolution. Second of all, Darwin wasn't racist. Mendel was an "evolutionist". By the way, Darwin was not racist. Darwin was not even an atheist, nor a philosopher. He was a revolutionary scientist, his theory is able to help develop new medicine, help with modern day society, and incredibly influential in the sciences. Without evolution most of your medicine wouldn't be here.

Wage Labour and Capital was published in 1847. The Same Year the Communist Party was established, The Communist Manifesto was published in 1848. On the Origin of Species was published in 1859 so, yes, Darwinism is totally the intellectual precursor of Marxism...   ???

That was depressing.

A kid I used to know just spent about two hours trying to justify Biblical slavery to me (and himself I presume).

sigh... no wonder there's no concern for human rights, if even modern Christians think slavery is OK.

I'm just back from six weeks in FourecksDown Under and wanted to show you a couple of photos.

Tasmanian devil

Sadly, the species is suffering from a contagious facial tumour which is inexorably diminishing the population in the wild. This little critter lives in a wildlife sanctuary where he has been raised after he had been extracted from his dead mother's pouch - marsupial babies can survive up to three days after their mothers' death.

The Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is trying to raise funds:

And this Short-beaked Echidna was digging next to the road in Lake St Clair Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania:

Echidnas are sooo dumb: They curl up for maybe 30 seconds, and if you keep quiet, they uncurl again. That's when the predator can pounce tourist can shoot the photo.
I saw lots of them as roadkill.

UC Berkeley researchers found that 20 percent of a nationally representative group reported no religious preference

These numbers always make me wonder, how many people have no actual religious beliefs but say they do on these surveys, simply because they're self-conscious about identifying as an atheist, or just not ready/willing  to admit it to themselves?

OTOH I doubt very many people at all do hold religious beliefs, but tell the researchers they do not....

Well, I think the phrase 'no religious preference' can be interpreted a lot of ways.

'I believe there's a god, but I don't believe in organized religion' would seem to fall under that category.

Poorly designed polls are another pet peeve of mine.  I can't believe the people at Pew and the like haven't figured out that poorly designed questions limit the applicability of their results.

Or maybe they have and don't care.

I saw lots of them as roadkill.

Why did the Echidna cross the road?

The first (& only) one of those I saw was while hitchhiking around Tasmania in 1974. I exitedly described it as a porchupine (since I'm a Kiwi)  to a Sydney-side teacher  who was on holiday with his new wife and he gazed into the distance and said it must have been an Echidna. Everyone here knows what they are since they are (sometimes humorous) subjects in children' stories but hardly anyone has seen one.

They are almost as laid back as a one handed Sydney cabby with crabs. (Aussie colloquial humour)

Did you see a Wombat? Or a Tasmanian Tiger?

That's just so awesome. They have a breakout session so a black guy can teach them to not sound so racist, and angry white southerners show up to mock Frederick Douglas and insist that the white man is the real victim of systemic bigotry in america.

Tomorrow they'll be back to asking why black people are too ignorant to vote for them.

Erasmus asked if i partook of any tard during my hiatus. Well, yes, and no. I read hours of political analysis a day, and so I'm exposed, indirectly, to the Party of Stupid, but I actually can't directly listen anymore. When Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, Mitch McTurtle, John Boner, etc, talk, I have to lunge for the volume knob, because everything they say is so stupid it feels like getting punched in the temple over and over.

Back when I was young and dumb(er), and the GOP was still as much William Buckley and George HW Bush and Brent Scowcroft etc., as it was the former Dixiecrats, I actually leaned republican. But the Southern Strategy, initiated by Nixon and Buchanan around 1960, really has reached it's culmination. One party is now utterly hostage to a shrinking demographic of about 27% of the public with no brains and shitty values. I didn't become a democrat, so much as the GOP became an insane asylum, and in a winner-take-all system, voting third party is either irrelevant or harmful.

This is great Steve! Thanks for the share. Somehow I missed this.

I heard a piece today on the radio as I was driving to work that the RNC is really concerned about "courting black, minority, and women" back to the Republican party. I couldn't help but think that the line itself reveals why they continue to fail at that strategy: have they not figured out the women and blacks are still considered minorities - particularly by the Republican Party?

But the bit that really got me was their belief that getting such votes was just a matter of changing their message. If those people ("Those people"? Uhh...seems there's another problem you folk aren't picking up on) just came to understand the party, they'd come back. No...the reason they left you is because they understood you all too well. And you Republicans - particularly the tea party side - really did make your feelings about such folk all-too-well-known.

The disabilities treaty was an opportunity for the United States to show some global moral leadership, but it was killed. U.S. military leaders strongly support the Law of the Sea treaty, but Republicans refuse to allow it to be ratified, too. The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) deserves a fair hearing, but the GOP won't give it one. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is now the longest of long shots (the United States joins Somalia and South Sudan as the only countries on the planet who refuse to ratify it).
__
In late 2010, the Senate just barely ratified the New START nuclear treaty, over the objections of most Senate Republicans, and it enjoyed the support of the Pentagon, the Joint Chiefs, eight former secretaries of state from both parties, five former secretaries of defense from both parties, seven former Strategic Command chiefs, national security advisers from both parties, nearly all former commanders of U.S. nuclear forces, and former President George H.W. Bush.

If the US becomes a third-world country over the next few decades, it wouldn't surprise me.

It's funny that they think the problem is "not getting the message across effectively" rather than the message itself.

Hi gals and guys, thanks for the welcome!

Yes, I saw lots of wombats, some live ones and most of them roadkill. The roads in the mountains were littered with dead animals - different species of kangaroos, echidnas ... and it must have been the mating season, because ever so often they came in pairs.

The Tassie tiger - I wish!

I'll go back to Tasmania for three whole months, May, June, July, and will stay a lot of the time in Hobart where the internet connection is excellent, unlike in the mountains where I had to queue for the only spot available.
