I was thinking that there might be a nicer way to examine our local crew of creobots (I really must find another word for them) or MacGuffins.

Sure, they are all challenged by fact, logic, and manners, but is one more stimulating of interesting side-tracks than others?

Note the excellent divergences into Mesoamerican languages and PORTUGUESE found in the "Cut-n-Paste" Dave thread.

Note the amusing side-tracks into mathematics and cosmology in the "Crystal spheres" Ghost thread.

Note the.... well, sorry Skeptic, I'm having a hard time finding a good side-track from your thread.  But you're just beginning here - I'm sure we can come up with something.  Oh, yes!  N-body problems!

Let's face facts: none of these guys is here to develop any undertanding; they're here to preach, troll, argue, rant, etc.  But their value as intellectual MacGuffins needs recognition!

(And it's much nicer to see the postive side of someone's presence.  This'll get me good points in Paradise, I betcha!  :)  )

Had to go with T-Daddy.  He's so screamingly over the top and clueless that it's hilarious.  Every time I read one of his rants I picture him looking like David Spade in Joe Dirt.  Hard to take someone that goofy seriously.  ;)

Nah. I think I'm learning more from other people's posts on the Black Knight's threads than either Bill's or Mr. Homophobe's. So not only is Dave the second dumbest (Thordaddy is clearly the dumbest), but the responses from others to his dumbness are the most entertaining and informative.

no, none of them are more stimulating of side-tracks, per sae, but it's the sheer volume of posts spit out that inevitably lead to at least one or two interesting tangents.

In that sense, over the long term, I gotta hand this one to gawp, as he's been productive in that area not only here, but on PT as well.

However, if AFD hangs around a bit longer, he might be able to overtake gawp with sheer volume.

Okay, I give up.

I tried to figure it out from context, but I couldn't.

I even looked it up on Wikipedia. The results were ambiguous.

So I'll be the geek who isn't ashamed to raise his hand in class.

What is a 'MacGuffin'?

Some sort of breakfast thing McDonald's sells?

A McGuffin ( or maguffin, etc.) is used in writing. I first heard it in s-f to denote a kind of plot device used to propel a story. I think Alfred Hitchcock coined the term, though. Yeesh, I have also learned not to drink Bushmill's while posting. The "One Ring" in LoTR is a "mcguffin"...it's a foil that propels the plot forward.

Oh, bother!  I'm so sorry.  My bad.

OK, now that we've gotten THAT out of the way:

Quote
A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or Maguffin) is a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story, but has little other relevance to the story itself.
from Wikipedia.
Quote
The element that distinguishes a MacGuffin from other types of plot devices is that it is not important what object the MacGuffin specifically is. Anything that serves as a motivation will do. A true MacGuffin is essentially interchangeable. Its importance will generally be accepted completely by the story's characters, with minimal explanation. From the audience's perspective, the MacGuffin is not the point of the story.

The technique is common in films, especially thrillers. Commonly, though not always, the MacGuffin is the central focus of the film in the first act, and then declines in significance as the struggles and motivations of the characters take center stage. Sometimes the MacGuffin is all but forgotten by the end of the film.

Because a MacGuffin is, by definition, ultimately unimportant to the story, its use can test the suspension of disbelief of audiences. Well-done works will compensate for this, with a good story, interesting characters, talented acting/writing, and so on. Poorer works, which fail in those areas, often only highlight a MacGuffin, sometimes to the point of ridiculousness. MacGuffins may be acceptable to the general audience, but fail to be believable for experts in the subject matter (such as a particular technology, or historical detail). (emphasis added)

Does that make it any clearer?  Sue me: I can't spell worth a darn.

I'm afraid I'm being dense.

I read that and basically understood it, but still I don't understand how you were applying the term in the present context. For example, how, say, Skeptic could be a plot device who motivates the characters and advances the story, but with little other relevance to the story itself.

I voted for Paley as the current reigning mcguffin. AFDave only hit a few subjects that I had to do much research on. Paley is all over the place with bizarre ideas

I would say that I'm not an appropriate choice on these two polls, but then I didn't make the poll. LOL

A person can be a Macguffin, like the one-armed man that "The Fugitive" is "chasing"..leading through a series of stories. Moriarty is often used as an off-story device in the Sherlock Holmes stories. He's the evil mastermind lurking behind some events that lead us through the mystery. A "thinking computer" can be a mcguffin in s-f, like the "evil" one in Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" or the "nice" one in Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"
Ummm...in the case of evo. v. ID-creos any of the  "characters" serves to propel the "story" forward to various degrees of complexity and interest. WHO they are is not all that important, it's that they are creating  interest, research/thinking and conflict, I suppose --  which is the lifeblood of a good tale.
I hope that helps, but if not, blame it on the whiskey.

Ah, okay, so the best Maguffin of this group would be the person who raised the most questions and prompted the most lively, forward-moving momentum, regardless of whether they actually had any idea what they were talking about, or whether their comments made sense.

Gotcha.

I vote AFD. TD is far too predictable ("gays bad!"), GoP attracts attention but never really raises issues that go anywhere, and all Skeptic does is this bizarre evasive kabuki dance where he refuses to admit he's a creationist. As demented and illogical as they are, AFD's posts keep things moving here. Just one ill-thought out comment from him, like "Portuguese is a cross between French and Spanish!" can keep us going for days. Have you noticed how little we talk about DaveTard ever since AFD took up residence here? (I sometimes wonder how DT must feel about this. Not good.)

*gulp* you don't think ol Springerbot banned him "permanently" from existence, do ya?

The Springerbot does get kinda jealous of anybody who gets more attention than he does.

Maybe DT went out to Fort Wayne and kicked AFD's ass, just like he threatened to do to Davison.

Sigh. Looks like DT didn't kick AFD's ass after all. He just posted a monster  rant to 'his' thread. Looks like he probably spent the whole last 24 hours writing it.

Makes me tired just looking at it.

Amusing revival Arden, I'd thought about it myself.

Louis

P.S. ADDED IN EDIT: I don't think ti's a violation of privacy to reveal that Arden PMed me to say he did not revive this thread. So, sorry but the opening statement of the first line prior to the comma is wrong. It would appear that this thread has popped to the top of the page well after I last posted on it also, so voting moves the thread up and doesn't change the attribution, because regardless of who votes the last poster remains the same. Just thought I'd clear that up for anyone who cared (which undoubtedly won't be anyone!)

Ironically, Louis has succeeded in reviving this thread.  :p

Funny thing, I can't remember what on earth I was talking about with half the posts I made in this thread. Uh oh.  :O

I wasn't on this forum when the thread started, but now that it's been non-revived, I thought I'd try to clarify the MacGuffin.

The best example, the one Hitchcock coined the term for IIRC, is the money Janet Leigh's character steals at the beginning of Psycho.  You may recall that Leigh steals money from her workplace on impulse and drives away (because it's Friday, she thinks she has the whole weekend.)  It gets Leigh to the Bates motel and it gets her sister and the detective searching for her, but it has nothing to do with her murder. (Norman Bates, who knows nothing of the money, sinks it into the lake with her body and car.)

Now, of course, we know how the movie ends, but think about the original release.  Put yourself in the seat with those first viewers.  When the movie came out, all the danger seemed related to the money for the first half hour.  In following the money, we are led down a completely irrelevant path.    The money is the MacGuffin.

H
