Isn't there somebody who posts unusually quantitative graphs about uncommon descent over time? Or am I misremembering that? I've suddenly got a weird urge to see the number of distinct commenters by year. Like, what was it averaging back in the day vs. now.

Gladly. You asked for the numbers of unique editors per year - here they are:

2005: 450
2006: 770
2007: 730
2008: 770
2009: 770
2010: 580
2011: 670
2012: 490
2013: 510
2014: 580
2015: 500
2016: 380
2017: 300
2018: 280
2019 (Until Nov): 190

Obviously , these numbers are declining over the last six years. But the number of 2019 is not final yet, though it will be quite probably the smallest number in the history of UD.

The graph takes this idea one step further: for each day from Apr 2005 until Nov 2019, it shows the number of unique editors in the 365 days period before that day. The colors indicate how many edits those unique editors made during these 365 days.

Clearly, Intelligent Design is on the rise ;-)

Is the 2005 number an artifact of the way you're doing the math? And editors means commenters?

I wonder if you mean contributors when you say editors and opening posts when you say edits.

@ DiEb

By editor I mean anyone who adds a comment. Yes, each comment is an edit in my world ;-)

According to my data, there have been 4,200 commentators/editors since the start of UD. Kairos Focus is the most prolific of them (with 29,500 comments), followed by Bornagain77 (26,500), then Mung (15,300).

Not included in these numbers are the threads/articles they have authored (e.g., 642 for Kairos Focus)

The number of unique editors is the number of distinct screen-names on comments over a certain period of time.

All these numbers are according to my counts - I crawled the articles at UD and gathered the data on comments. I hope that I did not make some egregious errors, but I only checked  cursory for plausibility.

So, basically UD is converging on a single contributor, presumably (though not necessarily) with a single opinion.

Is this a Dembski Weasel program, where bannination is a form of negative locking?

When did Barry Arrington take over? There's a noticeable decline from the end of 2014.

I have not really a word count, more a count of "things separated by white space after getting rid of some of the html artifacts" - which I hope is some approximation. I have not played around with it much, and there are no insightful graphs at the moment.

But while KF's post only feel to become longer over time, BA77's really do so:

average "word" count of comments by bornagain77 per year:
2005:     NA
2006:     NA
2007:     329
2008:     211
2009:     302
2010:     275
2011:     367
2012:     416
2013:     414
2014:     501
2015:     573
2016:     706
2017:     797
2018:     786
2019:     998

@ DiEb

I wonder if you mean contributors when you say editors and opening posts when you say edits.

If only we could combine the totals for the various socks.  I wonder if Joe’s outweigh some of the more industrious folks from here.

Oh, arrington was there way before that. As soon as Dover happened Dembski saw the writing on the wall and he unloaded that depreciating asset within a few short years.

Yes, here's a brief time line from back then:
December 20, 2005 - Dover decision
December 26, 2005 - Dembski announced he was 'mothballing' UD indefinitely
January 4, 2006 - Dembski 'resurrects' UD and announces his partial step down, saying "DaveScot has been the designated blogczar"
March 25, 2006 - Barry's first OP (and possibly his first comment?)
November 14, 2008 - Barry takes over UD. Some time later we found he had given himself the title of President!
March 15, 2009 - Barry finalises his coup d’état, banninating DaveScot

Comparing this against DiEb’s graph I think it’s interesting* that activity at UD coninued a sharp rise for 9 months or so after the Dover outcome. DaveTard seems to been in charge over there during a highly active 2.5 years, and Barry’s Presidency has seen a long, slow decline, although not without its peaks in activity.
*If I am reading the graph correctly**; I'm no statistician.
**ETA - Oops - looks like I was misinterpreting the graph , as stevestory has pointed out there is a lag in it with any point representing comments in a 365 day period.

If I understand correctly there wasn't a sharp rise around then, it has to do with not having data from early 2005.
