it's been a long 14 years since we've been doing the UD threads and there were periods where I was with it and not with it and paying attention and not paying attention and unfortunately to me the lewontin thing is lost to the sands of time...if anybody can give me a brief rundown of the historical overview with regard to that topic I would appreciate it, but if it's too elaborate and historical for anybody to bother with I understand that too.

The IDiots at UD (normally Kariosflatus but occasionally Batshit or News) have been recycling the Lewontin quote-mine about materialism pretty much every week for the last decade at least.   SOP is now for the first person to spot it to post here "Lewontin!"  No cash prize but bragging rights until the next occurrence.   :)

Lewontin by Quote!
Quote
Suzan Mazur: Excuse me, what do you mean by selection?

David Wilson: Selection? Natural selection.

Suzan Mazur: Natural selection has been debunked by the scientific community. David, you know that. You know that. Why are you lying to the public?

You know that. Look at Eugene Koonin. Look at Jerry Fodor. Look at Richard Lewontin.

Moderator: Let’s let him answer the question.

Suzan Mazur: He needs to seriously define what he means by natural selection.

Moderator: We’re not ready for the question yet.

Suzan Mazur: The whole thing [talk] doesn’t work if he doesn’t define it.
How'd you like to have this kind of shrill nutcase comin' at you?  But on the other hand, Wilson takes money from Templeton, so he deserves it.

Best definition I know of for "natural selection" is "differential reproductive success".

Wonder if that would work over there?

Ah. The classic BA77 argument against an atheist. Claim that they are meatbots so they can’t have real thoughts. It was lame the first thousand times you used it. Now it is just pathetic.

If you ever have a real argument, let me know.

Suggested listening: "Truth is out of style" by MC 900-foot Jesus.

Truth Is Out of Style

Quote

I've never heard that guy but this sounds interesting.

Quote
Griffin's father was an army officer,[2] and his family moved frequently before eventually settling in Dallas, Texas in 1979.[3] Griffin studied the trumpet and has a BA in Music from Morehead State University as well as an advanced degree in music from North Texas State University.[2] Before becoming MC 900 Ft. Jesus, Griffin played in local Dallas bands The Telefones and Lithium X-Mas.

Career
Griffin's stage name came from a sermon by Oral Roberts, in which the televangelist claimed that he had received a vision of a 900-foot-tall (270 m) Jesus, who commanded him to build a hospital (CityPlex Towers) on the campus of Oral Roberts University.[2][3]

Hell with the Lid Off (1990) was Griffin's first full-length release for MC 900 Ft. Jesus as well as the first time Griffin had appeared on a major record label. Featuring DJ Zero (Patrick Rollins) and the single "Truth is Out of Style" which gained a cult following.[3][4]

It's been a while but I used to listen to him and Thomas Dolby quite a bit back in the day. Additional suggested listening ...

The tongue in cheek If I Only Had a Brain (The UD theme song)  *better audio sans dope music video

And my favorite, The City Sleeps (just because)

I haven’t followed this discussion on reality and the observer, and I have no intention of reading thousands of obtuse words written by BA77 and KF. But I assume that it is the same nonsense about reality not existing until it is observed.

How do you explain historic temperature estimates based on stable isotope ratios? Do the stable isotope ratios not exist until they are observed? Or do the historic temperatures not exist until the isotope ratios are observed?

What about the discovery of fossils? Do the fossils not exist until we observe them? Do the animals that lived millions of years ago not exist until we observe the fossils?

BB, if you can’t be bothered to actually read and follow a discussion, snide dismissive commentary serves only to show that you are failing the test of good faith participation in a fairly significant albeit somewhat tangential discussion. I suggest, you would be well advised to reconsider the significance of moral government of our intellectual life in light of the inescapability of manifest duties to truth, right reason, prudence (including warrant), fairness and justice etc. Your triple fail here in a dismissive attempt speaks volumes. Do you honestly think anyone is reading all of this, let alone comprehending it?

You mean, does the wave function of a post ever collapse if no one does anything other than quickly scroll past without looking? (ba’s position), or is the interaction with the pixels on my screen sufficient to bring the post into existence (kf’s) position, and is the whole thing just part of the universal mind (wjm’s position), or does it really exist as part of an objective reality (Stephen B’s position)

See, I have been paying attention! 🙂

KF and BA77 have posted 29,355 words in the last two days. Given that a typical novel is about 100,000 words, they will have written the equivalent of a novel in six days if they keep up this pace. Even Stephen King isn’t that prolific.

BB, it is clear that you have not actually looked at what is happening, by lumping two very different individuals together with quite diverse patterns (esp. over the past few days).

You are absolutely correct. You were only responsible for about 10,000 of the 30,000 words. Therefore, it would take you at least ten days to produce a novel’s worth of words.
