I would ask this question in the Sal thread, but there's too much other stuff going there for this to get noticed...

In a recent message, FTK said this:

Quote

I am saying emphatically that, from an atheist perspective, our morality evolved along with everything else on planet earth.  From a *true* atheist perspective (very few people are true atheists, IMHO),

I was intrigued by FTK's apparent statment here, which seems to be that most people who *say* they're atheists aren't really atheists. What I'm predicting is one of those things where someone tries to define some group and gets to say who is or isn't a member, not unlike when Protestants say Catholics aren't Christians. But, in the interest of fairness, I should ask FTK what she meant by this, in case I'm completely misunderstanding it:

1) are you saying most people who claim to be atheists aren't really atheists?

2) if so, WHY are most professed atheists not the real deal? What are your criteria?

3) if there's so few atheists, why do they upset and obsess you so?

Why did god make them so smart????

Oh, it’s just like the “they’re not true Christians” crap said of (alternately) Christian Scientists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Catholics, Pentecostals, and members of the liberal mainstream churches, anyone who accepts the evidence for evolution, women who have jobs, etc., ad nauseum. I don’t play that game; if someone identifies him/herself as a Christian that’s what I call that person too.

So I wonder what a “true” atheist is.

I dunno, but as soon as she gets over here I will ask her about those reviewers for Walt Brown's book  :p

Please.  If y'all want to carry on an actual conversation about this, fine.

But no more ridiculous Ftk threads.

They make my head hurt.

One who stays in the closet rather than being all out and flamboyant and shit?

Lou states the obvious.

C'mon, this isn't remotely unique among material from the past week or so. It doesn't deserve its own thread.

Actually you wear a white (or straw) hat after Easter and put back the black or dark hat(s) after the first freeze of the year.

Nope, here in the heartland we'uns (both of us, DB and me) wear the white hats year round.

If it turns out that, despite my assumptions to the contrary, I do not number among the ranks of the "True Atheists" ™, I sure do hope that somebody--anybody!-- promptly reclassifies me under my new, true metaphysical philosophy, lest I be consigned to forever wallow in existential purgatory!   ???

Ha! Resorting to the "Stylish Texan" fallacy gets you no points, and throws into doubt your claim of atheism.

Everyone knows their are no stylish Texans, and they don't let atheists buy property down there.

I hear that Texas law says that atheists can't buy property or vote, but if they keep quiet and pay their taxes, they probably won't get beaten up.

I wanted to be a real atheist.

I promised to go to school, but was distracted by the marionette theatre. The blue fairy set me straight, but then I got distracted in the land of play and turned into a donkey. There are some other details, including eventually being swallowed by a whale. Something about a talking cricket.

So now I'm just an apetheist.
