re:53. I can’t assent to the presuppositions, so specific questions which are based on those presuppositions are meaningless to me.

And since Barry is incapable of and/or entirely unwilling to even entertain my framework for understanding our moral nature and moral judgments, I can’t try to answer within my framework.

So I won’t answer Barry’s loaded question.
I imagine Barry's angrily kicking his dog while drinking cheap scotch :-)

He saw you and raised you with Materialist Reaches New Low.

Also, I’ll point out again that I am not a materialist, not that you care.

I wonder if Barry will edit the post to reflect this.

Oh dear. Barry doesn't like it when people point out that Jack Krebs isn't a materialist

He could simply have quietly changed the title of the post, and added a short note, and we could have moved on.

Can you still post at UD. There have been a couple times where Barry has given me this "Last Warning" caution at the same time that he banned me.

I find this entire argument by Barry completely childish. It is akin to the question, "Have you stopped beating your wife?" and insisting on a yes or no answer.

There is no reason that torturing and killing babies for fun has to be objectively evil. A first grader can reason why allowing this would be bad for society and, therefore, bad for everyone in it. But to expect Barry to have the reasoning capability of a first grader might be expecting too much.

And I'm now in moderation.

jack - I just pointed out that you had stated that you're not a materialist, so Barry should perhaps change the title of the post. Apparently that is dishonest, but presumably claiming someone is a materialist when they say (repeatedly) that they are not isn't.

BTW, my comment in moderation says

Amazing. I'm aware that refusing to engage Barry on his terms is a bit hard on him, but it's interesting to see how flipped out he seems to be.

You know that you are challenging him when he calls you "a pathetic snivelling coward." You have to work harder at it.

Was it my imagination or did I see a comment by Antonin and a reply by Latemarch before they disappeared?

(been following along and enjoying Jack and Bob teasing Barry!)

ETA I see Jack's been saving threads. Maybe he caught them.

I didn't see them but it wouldn't surprise me. He ha been disappearing comments at an increasing rate. As R J Sawyer I had one disappeared just before he banned me.

Are they going to get offended and leave for one of those other hoppin' ID blogs? Barry's paying to keep this one on life support as it is.

Why didn’t you post the entire exchange in order to show the context of that remark?

You’re just plain intellectually dishonest., Barry.

Also, I’ll point out again that I am not a materialist, not that you care.

Amazing!!!

Dear lurkers, FYI: this is the paragraph the sentence Barry quoted in the OP came from:

To be flippant, it’s like asking whether unicorns are pink. I know what the question means, but since unicorns don’t exist, there is no possible answer to the question: it’s a meaningless question.

This was part of a more substantial discussion about how, in general, one can’t assent to the conclusion of a conditional statement if one doesn’t assent to the premises.

The OP is dishonest.

Hi Bob. Did you save your remark? If so, perhaps you could post it somewhere else. I’ve been saving these threads lately because you never can tell what Barry will delete.

Hmmm. It appears a post from Antonin, or maybe more than one, have been disappeared. How honest is that?

Looks like I need to start saving a separate copy of this thread after every post because who knows what Barry will just delete.

Oh man that's some good stuff.

Off Topic but I'm amazed BatShit only mentions god 22 times on that thread.

Vivid, we were discussing this very question on the other thread.

Today, Barry choose to inaccurately and dishonestly highlight part of a conversation I was having with you and start a new thread. (He also refuses to correct his heading stating that I am a materialist, FWIW)

That action on Barry’s part is what this thread is about, as far as I am concerned. If you want to continue our discussion, post over on the other thread.

Apologies for missing that! And now that thread has a first comment by none other than Jawa alias dionisio. Brace for another round!

Andrew, perhaps there is a third alternative, which is this: You are not bright enough to understand that my two statements are not contradictory.....

The next time you try to connect someone on the Internet – especially in a condescending and sanctimonious tone – you should take a moment to make sure you actually understand what they said.

Was I mistaken or did a couple ID proponents (Latemarch and OldAndrew) take Barry to task over his infantile behaviour?

As I recall, Antonin posted something asking about how big was the problem of baby-torturing-for-pleasure in the US and something not very complimentary about Barry ("antics" was the word, I think).

Latemarch responded, saying Antonin was missing the point and Antonin came back with something about infanticide, mothers and post-natal depression. I guess they were a bit off-topic! :)

And on a lighter note, Kairosfocus linked to a site about what's been keeping busy him in Montserrat. Can you imagine having him involved in your local politics?

link

Isn't everything on Montserrat immediately a national rather than a local issue or rather crisis? Especially, when KF is involved.

Why, yes, there is. We know it in exactly the same way we know that 2+2=4.

I hope he does mean "because we were all taught this when we were very young".

Of course, he could mean that we can prove it with set theory, but I'm not sure I've seen a proof of objective morality. I have, though, seen a proof that shows how to persuade a rational Saudi that executing homosexuals is wrong (briefly, you appeal to his other beliefs).
