I'm sad that I don't get to be a kid in this generation. We really did use Nat'l Geographic.

This has been bothering me. Is all Tard Woo?  Or is Woo a subset of Tard?  Or neither?

IOW, are Tard and Woo components of a nested hierarchy, and if so, which is superordinate?

Zach?

Zach?

Woo is officially a subset of tard, that specifically deals with magical (not necessarily religious in nature), intervention in reality.

IOW, things like "The Secret" that claim you can alter reality through wishful thinking.

seances, speaking with the dead

much of the fake homeotherapy crap.

that is classified as "woo"

think Depak head-in-ass Chopra

so you have "tard" as a primary header, and woo, ID, creationism, etc., all come under the general heading of "tard", while not always being the same.  However, there can at least be a bit of overlap at times.

I hope that clarifies the issue.

It's also the reason I brought up the thread topic; not all tard is from the ID camp, and sometimes it's good to get a little variety in your tard consumption.

or at least it might give them a hint as to the value of internet polls.

Gotcha.

It's the tree of laugh.

yes, that's a perfect metaphor.

Tard of course only being a major branch.

I still prefer satire.

However, that fits perfectly into your metaphor:  if humor is a tree, all the branches are connected, and certainly satire is often inspired by tard.

hmm, I wonder if we would consider the roots of the tree of humor to be based on tragedy, then?

That site is plain wierd to me. Yet most British newspapers have an astrology section/post. Very strange. Or maybe not. I guess that most of the general public want some sort of supernatural explanations for things. The Universe/Planet/Life does look designed so maybe it isn't so shocking that the majority of people want to believe in a mystical power of some sort. Damned if I know.

Personally, I like the idea of some authoritarian figure looking after my personal interests but I have to admit the evidence is not convincing.

or especially with things like horoscopes and fortune cookies, the lasting impression superstitions have left on all of us make some enjoy reading fortune cookies or horoscopes "just for fun".

It IS weird.  It's like carrying a rabbit's foot, but saying it's "just for kicks" when asked about it.

I've also hear the "hedging bets/what could it hurt" philosophy associated with such things, which might be a notch up in "seriousness" from the "just for kicks" folks.

Something tells me i read at least a couple of articles on this phenomenon when I was studying psych, but the specifics escape me at the moment.

I think religion fits a lot of people like this as well.

for example, when 91% of americans say they are "religious", I know that a LOT of that are folks just playing the "hedging bets" type philosophy.  They see no harm in claiming to be religious "just in case".

Just how much is debatable, but it's significant.

I pretty much agree with what you are saying.

Yet even things that I consider ridiculous, I do play along with. I have been guilty of "touching wood" also I have avoided walking under ladders. Suspicions that in part I find ludicrous yet still pander to. I guess I am a mess.

EDIT: Orwellian double-think seems to aply here. I know I am guilty, yet seem helpless to stop.

welcome to the world.  Most of us are, in one way or another.

someday, I think, rationality will be the prevalent mindset, and compartmentalization resulting from exposure to supersition will no longer be warranted.

probably won't happen in my lifetime, though.
