I often wonder what DT thinks of what he's 'accomplishing' as UD's resident bully/comic relief. I'm sure most of it is the thrill of being in a venue where he can push people around, which certainly isn't going to happen for him any other way. He's a fat, retired ex-Marine whose kid(s) are grown. He can't indulge his alpha male fantasies any other way except growling at people over the internet while serving as someone else's lackey. He also gets to pretend he's a scientist, too, which seems to be a little hidden fantasy he's got.
But I do wonder whether he's having second thoughts. At some level he must realize he's a laughing stock, all the smart people are on the 'other' side, ID is no better off or respected than when he started (worse, if anything), and the site is now overrun with credulous Jesus freaks who don't know jack shit about how science works. When his time at UD first began he undoubtedly entertained fantasies about being on the groundfloor of some 'revolution', but it must be getting harder to convince himself of that. He must dimly sense how ridiculous it's all become, but by now I assume he stays by some combination of retiree's boredom, a craving to boss people around and browbeat people who displease him, and finally an inability to admit he's wrong. Sheer inertia could keep him doing this for *years*. |
He has a big vicious dog guarding a flock of really dumb ducks fantasy. When you are a trained killer marine you have to protect girly boys and not bitch to the CO. It comes with the territory. In D.T.’s case those chinless apron pullers at UD make him look like Rambo instead of lawn furniture tester.
