FtK made a comment in a PM to me about my minions here.

I said that "minion" implied people at my direction, and that I didn't presume that applied.

But I got to thinking just how convenient having some (or even one) minions could be, and thought I'd float that idea.

I'll really try not to be too much of a slavedriver... ask for a bit of transcription here, some online research there, that sort of thing. No making bricks without straw, I promise.

So, how about it? What's the prospect for official minion status here?

(The "crickets chirping" response seems likely.)

Now if you'd asked for an FtK-baiting minion, they'd be beating a freeway to your door.

To be honest Wes, you're hardly a Dembski like figure with an agenda to make money of your rubes*.

I've found AtBC to be a community that welcomes outsiders, and debate. But you *have* to be able to debate, that's they key. If anything, we're over tolerant to the point of if detracting from the pleasure of involvement, but such is the price of freedom.

* I did donate to the new server fund, though.

Here is another (slightly differently translated) quotation of the beginning of that passage from Augustine, without the elipsis:
“Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other
elements of this world, about the motion and orbit of the stars and even their size and relative positions,
about the predictable eclipses of the sun and moon, the cycles of the years and seasons, about the kinds of
animals, shrubs, stones, and so forth, and this knowledge he holds to as being certain from reason and
experience."

Sooooo what's minioning paying these days? I'd sure love to get me some of that hot minion action.

Wait. That's meant to be hot midget action. Forget I said anything.

And the warm fuzzy I get from that just about balances out the sour taste from the following:

OK, FtK, you're right, I *do* have minions. Or at least minion.

But at least he posted something substantive, too, so there. And without any real prompting.

I dunno - that could be a more nuanced insult that you imagined.  I did some online research, as per your request.

From the OED
Quote
minion - 1. a. Originally: a (usually male) favourite of a sovereign, prince, or other powerful person; a person who is dependent on a patron's favour; a hanger-on. In later use (without the connotation ‘favoured’): a follower or underling, esp. one who is servile or unimportant; a servant, officer, subordinate, assistant; a henchman.
In early use sometimes with contemptuous suggestion of homosexual relations

The second definition isn't much better.
Quote
b. A male or female lover. Also (freq. derogatory): a man or woman kept for sexual favours; a mistress or paramour. Obs.

Some of the others are quite interesting.
Quote
A kind of small culverin or cannon. More fully minion gun, piece. Now hist.
and
Quote
A kind of small lettuce. More fully minion lettuce. Obs.

Great word!

Well, I've never been minionized before.
But I'm not keen on being turned into a lettuce.
Doesn't Satan have minions? Or is that Santa? Can I be your elf? See Louis, they're kinda midgity... we can all be Santa's Elves!!

I'm up for that. So long as I get to test Scalextric sets. (And I aint polishing any of Rudolph's shiny red bits).

I supose it was easier for Ftk to deal with the idea of minions than the idea that people came to be anti-ID independently through evidence.

I am a tad dissapointed with Ftk as I actually did have hopes that she would see just how corrupt the ID side was.

Personally I prefer "Myrmidons".

(I first came across the word in a John Buchan book, the second in a trilogy, at the beggining of which one of the characters scores the winning try in a Scotland rugby match.  Now lets see how many people know their Buchan.  The same book also has the word Hamesucken, which is the act of assaulting someone in their own home.)

Can I start out as a lackey, and work my way up to minion?  Is there a paid training program?  How are the benefits?

ps:  I do say "NO" however to starting as a lickspittle.

J-Dog,

I'm afraid we only have an opening for toady at best. Granted you are more qualified than the lickspittle entry level requires, but are you toady material? Have you got the required fawning sycophancy diplomas? The toady level is no easy start for any minion, you are required to be able to be instantly obsequious and demonstrate a grovelling servility that would give a chastised Edwardian butler pause.

Perhaps we could find some space for you at the peon grade.

Louis,

I have always admired the exquisite beauty,  appropriatness and intelligence inherent is all your posts.  It's not often that someone of your perspicacity graces a board like this, and I am sure that I can speak for all of us here, that we are all so extremely fortunate to bathe in the reflected glow of your wit and wisdom.

I would certainly like to apply for the toady position, if you think I have the qualifications, Your Worthyiness.

Most respectfully and worshipfully yours,

Toady Applicant Extrordinaire

ps:  Please don't turn me down and force me to go to UD, where my extreme toadiness would pale and only be like a popped pimple on DaveScot, Sal and the other UD Minions Big Toady Butts.

J-Dog,

Nice of you to notice.

When are you going to start with the exaggerated sycophancy and grandiloquent superlatives required for the position?

Louis

P.S. You can have the job, but only because I like you. Which just goes to show it's who you know!

I'll be a minion.  It would be a step up from my current job.

One condition, though, I'll need a nametag that says "Doc Minion" and a card that gets me 10% off at the bar.

Forget these piffling modern writers! Achilles led the Myrmidons at the siege of Troy, so I'll see your Buchan and raise you a Homer.

Supposedly they were descended from a princess who had been seduced by Zeus, in the form of an ant. I can't even imagine how that is supposed to work.

Stephen, thats the point.  Buchan, being a well educated man, moving in such circles, used words such as myrmidons in that way.  Wouldn't you rather be a myrmidon in the battle against creationism than a minion?
