Not exactly.

my joy has been tempered by the regret I feel when considering that Limbaugh outlived Christopher Hitchens, who i am sure would have delivered a most appropriate epitaph for that fool that would have surpassed even his remark on the passing of Jerry Falwell

"if you had given him an enema you could have buried him in a matchbox"

folks, tard is a hydra and i suspect very little will change in the rhetoric even if the heads are lopped off and regenerate.  but it would be nice at least to hear some douchebag instead of these cardiomegalic drug induced priapists

When I'm at the Wal-mart or grocery story I typically pay with my debit card. On the pad it comes up, "EBT, Debit, Credit, Cash." I make it a point to say loudly to the check-out clerk, "EBT, what is that for?" She inevitably says, "it's government assistance." I respond, "Oh, you mean welfare? Great. I work for a living. I'm paying for my food with my own hard-earned dollars. And other people get their food for free." And I look around with disgust, making sure others in line have heard me.

I am going to step this up. I am going to do far more of this in my life. It's going to be my personal crusade. I hope other libertarians and conservatives will eventually join me.

What I plan to do this week, is to get yard signs made up, at my own expense, that read, "EBT is for Welfare Moochers." I will put the signs out on public property off of the right-of-way so it's entirely legal, in front of every convenience store or grocery store that has a sign out saying "EBT Accepted Here." I may even do some sign waving in front of these stores, holding up my "EBT is for Welfare Moochers," sign, and waving to passers-by.

If I meet a Democrat in my life from here on out, I will shun them immediately. I will spit on the ground in front of them, being careful not to spit in their general direction so that they can't charge me with some stupid little nuisance law. Then I'll tell them in no un-certain terms: "I do not associate with Democrats. You all are communist pigs, and I have nothing but utter disgust for you. Sir/Madam, you are scum of the earth." Then I'll turn and walk the other way.

Buttons. Boy, you can have a lot of fun with this. I plan to make up a bunch of buttons, and wear them around town, sayings like "Democrats are Communist Pigs," or "Welfare moochers steal from hard-working Americans," "Only Nazis support Seat Belt laws" or "No Smoking Ban: Nanny-Staters go Fuck Yourselves."

Holy Cow!

I really want to know what he thinks is 'conservative enough'.

But, if Romney won the primary because he was the most moderate, then it doesn't really make sense that he lost the general election because he was too moderate.  Oh well, logic and constancy are not hallmarks of the GOP.

That post is unclear. All the negative things about the horrible candidate were supposed to be about Obama.

But yeah, fox news is def part of an alternate reality. There's even an essay out there by a conservative, about how he and his friends increasingly can't talk with their older relatives who've been watching fox all day for a few years and are now hysterical and batshit.

FWIW, low-info voters are the biggest problem with politics, but cable news is a big problem. Hell, 'news' itself is really a problem. I really should spend some time and research and develop this into an essay, but in the meantime i'll just toss out some idle thoughts.

99% of news is a waste of  your time.

let's go to cnn:
Quote
THIS JUST IN
   American reaches deal with pilots
   Chrysler recalls 900,000 Jeeps
Cop mistakenly killed by fellow officer
Storm victims boo politicians | Photos
   Iran 'decisive' against U.S. drone
Lakers fire coach after 1-4 start
SEALs rebuked for aiding game maker
Man convicted in school yard killings
Teen killed playing soccer in Gaza
   Did climate change kill Mayans?
Teen alive after 3 days in ravine
   Soldier surprises wife, daughter
Tattoo artist banned at career day
   ABC star's mom denies abuse
Boy, 11, saves little sis from pit bulls
   Review: 'Skyfall' is Bond reinvigorated
   'DWTS' co-host has cancer
Baseball has a new drug problem SI
   Porn star: 'We're being persecuted'

If you skipped every last one of those stories, what important information would you be deprived of? How is my life improved in even the most infinitesimal way by knowing that Dave Petraeus is leaving the CIA because he's an adulterer? 153,000 people die every day, I'm supposed to learn something important because one of them was a teenager in Gaza?

I'm not opposed to superfluous knowledge. I believe in a broad liberal education, a lot of reading, and important current events. But to occupy ourselves every day with trivial bullshit is a problem. I know, because I'm acutely aware of how my news-junkie habits have stolen a good fraction of my life.

I've taken steps over the years to fix my bad habits. Leaving AtBC was part of that. I was immersed in the ramblings of idiots like Dembski, Luskin, and Cordova upwards of 8 hours a day some days. For what? It would have been meaningful if I'd been an active warrior in Dover or something like that, but I wasn't one of the ones doing anything useful. It was amusing, but had a huge time cost.

News also has a cost, and it can be a big one. Frankly, I think it would be a better world if we had 30 mins of news per week. Something like The Week, where you get condensed explanations of the basics of a story.

Something related--I stopped watching the sunday shows years ago, because there was just never anything new. Dems go on and recite talking points I know, republicans go on and say either knowing lies or really dumb things they really believe, and the host doesn't call anyone's bullshit because they won't get invited to the next georgetown cocktail party. Just an utter waste of time. The last two months listening to pundits (as nate calls them, entertainers) babble about momentum, the president's shortcomings, etc. Just a waste of time, since demographics, the economy, and turnout were all that really mattered. The right wing was utterly shocked because their 'news' had them not just ignorant but ass-backward from reality, to the point that they were actually mocking nate silver, who tuesday night wound up with a garbage bag of scalps over his shoulder.

In this, and other ways, the news can be not just a waste of time, but actually harmful. I have relatives who will tell you that half the scientists believe in evolution but half of them don't, same with global warming, because that's what bullshit fake-objectivity requires journalists to present.

A quick note: I'm not lamenting some lost golden age. Golden age beliefs are nearly always bullshit. In many ways the media world is infinitely better than it was decades ago. But like Sturgeon said, 90% of everything is crap. I need to develop better habits and avoid the crap more. In an hour of wikipedia wandering, you would easily, easily learn more interesting and useful information than an entire week of cable news.

Yeah, I can't even talk to my Pop about anything much more than the weather. Anything else and he's on about revolution and taxation without representation and Obama's a nazi communist muslim atheist born in Kenya and groomed to destroy America.

Last time it got that far was Easter a year and a half ago. My daughter was in from college and I was up there having breakfast. When he came in the door, first thing out of his mouth was "Hey son, did ya see what Trumpy's doing??" and started in on the birth certificate. I gave him hell because I just wanted to enjoy the time with Kay. He stomped out, stormed down to his house and deleted me from his facebook friends list. If you're looking at your calendar, it was later that week that Obama released his long form birth certificate.

Oddly, he's never mentioned the birth certificate to me since.

Getting rid of satellite/cable television, listening only to music, if anything, in the vehicle, and muting the commercials on Hulu/YouTube/Netflix has done wonders for my well being.

Well, that and finally having a real career. ;)

I just got unfriended by two people on facebook for pointing out their stupidity one too many times.

I guess 400 is about the limit of times they will accept being told "That's not what I said, did you actually read what I wrote?" before crying and running off.

I too abandoned cable and satellite, almost two years ago.  Couldn't be happier.  I get the TV shows I want, no commercials, I own them and can play them any time on any internet device.  I have caught up on dozens of series on Netflix.

Of course, now my mom is moving in, so she's getting cable.  But she's paying for it so I really don't care.  I'm still not watching commercials, and I'm not letting my boy watch them either.

Yeah, Facebook is the debil, and all the cool hipster kids hate on it these days.

Personally, I like it. I keep up with what my kids and friends are doing without 37 long phone conversations every single day. I have cool new science papers and blog posts come through my feed fairly constantly, and I can put out a call for a paper I don't have access to, but need, and have a copy usually within about five minutes. I make new photography contacts through friends and find out about group events and gallery exhibit openings (went to one last night, actually, had a lot of fun), and even just get ideas about what I want a model's eye make-up to look like in that shoot I'm planning for next week.

I tend to not care much about who unfriends me. I thought it was funny when my Pop did. Frankly, if anyone over the age of 14 is sweating who to friend or unfriend, it's probably best that they stay off Facebook. I'd give that advice to my Pop on his Facebook wall, but, um.. yeah.

It's a networking tool. It works for me, ymmv.

Plus, this and lolcats when this place is so dreadfully slow.

More than anything else that's wrong with news today, this is the thing that makes me want to throw something through a window. Preferably, the reporter.

In this, and other ways, the news can be not just a waste of time, but actually harmful. I have relatives who will tell you that half the scientists believe in evolution but half of them don't, same with global warming, because that's what bullshit fake-objectivity requires journalists to present.

This right here is what drives me up a wall. Why the fuck do I care what some crackpot or some religiot has to say about what scientists are doing?

More than anything else that's wrong with news today, this is the thing that makes me want to throw something through a window. Preferably, the reporter.

10 % of German biology students training to become teachers are creationists, according to a poll done by the university of Dortmund, and the number is increasing. I'm planning to emigrate - any suggestions?

How about Mars?  :)

I hear there's some scientific exploration going on there, and no creationists. If you can figure out how to get there I'd like to go with you. The peace and quiet would be wonderful.

99% of news is a waste of  your time.

The problem is how to avoid them when you live in a house...

I can't go on a bisycle ride everytime.

Getting rid of satellite/cable television, listening only to music, if anything, in the vehicle, and muting the commercials on Hulu/YouTube/Netflix has done wonders for my well being.

Well, that and finally having a real career. ;)

That's what I call applied wisdom!
