Barry's managed to prove materialism! He's put up a post about Bargaining With a Machine where he argues that computers can't be moral, so because humans are moral, they can't be computers. By comment 2 he has ended up here:

I bet they could build a brilliant KF bot here.

I'm not sure if a kf bot is a brilliant idea, or one of the worst ideas in human history.

I do know that using a bot like that in a Turing test would be evil.

You really know how to hurt a guy:  http://www.lulzcode.com/MarkovU....UI.html  (You inspired me to dust this off, fix the bit rot, and re-scrape UD.  I will admit to thinking more about how I could do it than whether I should.)

This is just a simple Markov chain with a stem length of 3.  Basically, it looks at the last two words, finds the most common word that follows them, adds it to the sentence, and repeats.  I made a minimal effort to keep the sentence and paragraph count similar to each bot's UD counterpart, but I didn't do anything related to grammar.

I had to cut off Kairosfocus at no earlier than 2015.  Out of 772 MB of data, a bit over 100 MB is his.  I'm disinclined to pay for more RAM just to support his deathless prose.

If anyone would like the code (it's a Lisp backend with a GWT UI) or the raw data, send me a message.

ETA:  Fixed link.

Oh oh, evolution is being threatened by more evidence for evolution:

Quote
“The hourglass model of embryonic evolution predicts an hourglass-like divergence during animal embryogenesis – with embryos being more divergent at the earliest and latest stages but conserved during a mid-embryonic (phylotypic) period that serves as a source of the basic body plan for animals within a phylum.”

Well, not so fast: From Hajk-Georg Drost, Philipp Janitza, Ivo Grosse, and Marcel Quint at Current Opinion in Genetics & Development:

• Developmental hourglass patterns are not specific for animals.

• In plants, developmental hourglass patterns are associated with embryogenesis and post-embryonic phase transitions.

• Morphological and transcriptomic patterns can be uncoupled.

Remember the "developmental hourglass"?  Well, not so fast.

Ha ha, Darwinists, plants have embryological evidence for evolution as well.  Don't you look stupid?  Then Dense babbles this nonsense:  "“Organizational checkpoints” as a substitute? Sure, but that is design, not Darwin."

Yeah, that's it, just declare it to be so.

Re "with embryos being more divergent at the earliest"

Really? Is that because the organizing factors that matter in later stages haven't yet kicked in by that point?

(Although, if it's that simple, why didn't the IDists think of that possible explanation? What? Oh.)

Just for more context:

"with embryos being more divergent at the earliest and latest stages"

Yes, I guess you could say what you did.  The thing about the earliest stages is that they're not all that crucial to the eventual "body plan," while, say, vertebrates have to get to much the same point of development in the intermediate stage in order to later build the basic vertebrate body with all of the differences between the various vertebrates.  How you get to the point crucial basic "body plan," isn't highly constrained, and of course later stages have to diverge to produce divergent vertebrate forms.

I'm sure the reply will be that those stupid materialist scientists were just too dumb to understand it wouldn't work.

Those dumb scientists will just have to settle for consolation prizes, like proving the Higgs boson.

If the IDiots were really serious they would buiild their own machine to prove the existence of their imaginary sky daddy ....er sorry imaginary sky designer. All they have to do is do years of research, write some truly remarkable peer reviewed papers apply for the funds work hard for decades  and...... nevermind. It's a lot easier to form a circle jerk on some wretched fundy blog and bitch for decades they are being undermined by the educated and intelligent classes. But they know in their own hearts they're lying to themselves because down to the last weasel they wouldn't waste their mony or their time on such an endeavour.

How to turn an ID critic into a stealth ID creationist as soon as he is dead:
Quote
The reader who sent us the link notes, “The man’s life work seems very IDish. He discovered there is a universal ZIP code system that cells use to navigate around the body, operating without issue for millions of years. That doesn’t sound like random evolution to me.”

At this point, it probably doesn’t sound random to very many people at all but—depending on where you work—if you want to keep your job, you just have to emit that stuff, right?

In 2005, Blobel was among the Nobelists sent a letter warning against teaching intelligent design to US governors.
Disgusting. Even in times of your the current US president.

It's a side issue, but that writing is sloppy. '[E]mit' when 'omit' fits the context much better, and that final sentence implies that Blobel was a recipient of the anti-ID letter when he was a signatory (although I don't think O'Leary intended that).

That last sentence could also be interpreted as talking about teaching ID to the governors, i.e., taking "teaching intelligent design to US governors" as a clause.

Alright Molson, let’s take our grievance to Mr. Arrington and see what happens.
I will forward the discussion to him.

See the comment in the Jonathan McLatchie vs. Keith Fox thread for context.

All I have done is criticized you for using a parody of someone’s name in several of your responses to him. A parody that you think is perfectly acceptable. But the moment I use a well known parody of your name to make a point, you go running to the boss crying foul. Maybe you have the power to have anyone who disagrees with you banned from this site, but that doesn’t say much about this site.

One of the more astonishing points of debate that has come out at UD is that at least some defenders of the evolutionary materialistic view are prepared to argue for or assume as default that we have had a beginningless past for the physical world.

The person making this statement believes in an eternal, intelligent, non-material being -- which is self-evidently more plausible.

Beginingless past? I didn't know that either science or creationism posited that.

At least, it appears that space (or space-time) as we know it had a starting point. Well, sort of, except that the math sort of breaks down when you get within a Planck of that point, but anyway. Course, that says nothing about space-time* as we don't know it. *or whatever it might turn out to be a (small?) part of.
