And is this Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, or Evangelical Christian morality?
You see, the hatreds and schisims seem to put your putative universal Christian morality at nought.
Should people follow these teachings? Well obviously they don’t. And as for the Beatitudes, they are plainly absolute childish nonsense:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit…” On what level is this profound? The poor in spirit are miserable, depressed. We now have medication for this diagnosable mental health issue.
“Blessed are the meek….”? Spare me. The meek are beaten, lied to, oppressed, and set upon, through out human history, in all cultures, and in all religions. This is just cheap, bad, pop psychology.
The peacemakers one is noble, because it is human in its nature.
Many of these are just impossible for human’s to truly feel, as is the requirement to “love your enemy…”
Where, when, and whom, has ever, ever done this?
There are parts of the New Testament where Jesus informs us to take no thought for tomorrow; we can’t do this.
He asks the impossible, and then gets angry when we fail to meet His impossible demands.
That my dear friends is sadistic morality, you’re welcome to it.

News is anything if not rigorous. She puts up a post about an article about an engineer's post-modern article. A couple of us point out that the article gets both the title of the engineer  and the name of the journal that the engineer's article appeared wrong. Denyse's response? Blame the engineers:

Quote
As groovamos notes above at 5, the situation with the discipline and the journals is quite confusing, so much so as to confuse my source, New Criterion and thus me. Maybe…

At any rate, I doubt that the confusion is an accident. It is part of a long-term decline that will make Engineering and Engineering Education ever more difficult to distinguish.

T7, you still haven’t said whether you believe that killing the wives and infant children of your defeated enemy is morally acceptable. I understand why you don’t want to answer. If I were a theist who believed that God’s morals were objective and eternal, I wouldn’t want to answer either.

Holy Shit. News puts up her usual nonsense, then there's this:

The nervous system uses a LOT of mechanical engineering. An example I encountered today while building courseware: The outer hair cells in the cochlea serve partly as sensors, mainly as an adaptive automatic gain control to insure that our attention stays focused on new and important info. Some of the AGC is in software and some is purely mechanical.

Here’s a purely mechanical mechanism: Each hair cell handles one frequency. Each has a long cilium that is yanked back and forth by the acoustic wave in the tectorial membrane. The long cilium pulls its shorter partners with a rope-like link. As the wave at this frequency continues, the rope reels out of a little ratchet in the long cilium, so that the overall impulse from all the cilia grows weaker. When the wave stops, the ratchet winches the rope back to its original tension.

T7: You are not very good at it:

Quote

You keep failing to understand that just because you don’t know something doesn’t mean it isn’t a fact.

Absolutely true. But saying that something is fact because it is fact is a circular argument. Objective, eternal morality must exist because it exists.

You are the one who is claiming that we cannot morally judge those who kill women and children for their own subjective reasons.

It is hard to have a discussion with someone who repeatedly puts words in your mouth that you never said. Of course I can morally judge anyone for their actions. However, if my morality is just based on ‘God said it is good’ rather than on a rational, logical, evidence based examination, then the validity and legitimacy of my objection is suspect. People from the Westboro Baptist church morally judge blacks and homosexuals all the time. I assume that you do not agree with them.
Quote

God is one day going to cause your death…

I wouldn’t downplay the impact of too much drinking and an unhealthy lifestyle.
Quote

The moral dilemma you are trying to create is can God order us to commit murder when He expressly commands us not to do it.

That definitely seems like a real dilemma to me. Or, at the minimum, he his sending mixed messages.
Quote

You pull things out of Samuel or Judges or what have you and think “Gotcha”. I can kill babies today.

No, I pull things out of Samuel and Judges (and don’t forget Leviticus) and think, boy, was God as big a jerk as he seems to have been?.
Quote

Judges, Samuel etc. was the norm in tribal relations back then. You cannot get that for some strange reason things were different B.C. than now.

I understand it quite well. It actually makes perfect practical, although perservse, sense to kill the infants of your defeated enemies. In that way you won’t have to deal with the next generation of enemies. But that is not the issue. The issue is that, if God thought that it was morally acceptable to do that a few thousand years ago, and since according to you morality is objective and internal, why do we not think that it is morally acceptable to do this today? Either God changed his mind, in which case morality is not objective and eternal, or we are misinterpreting God’s will today.

Sorry for the messy display- I can do much better with svg.

1. The outer ring of each pie chart display the author of the thread: see the bottom legend on the right

2. The segments indicate the number of comments on a thread:  the colors either indicate users who have authored threads (legend on the right) or the top 10 editors without publishing rights (legend on the left)

edit: explanation

Let's see.
JSmith:
Quote
ET

JS: Are there any circumstances under which it is morally acceptable to intentionally kill the wives and infants of a defeated enemy?

ET: Yes- disease comes to mind. They carry something that they are immune to but you and yours are not.

JS: Are you being serious? They just defeated their enemy in close combat using swords, spears and knives.

ET: They were NOT fighting the women and children in close combat.

JSmith: Epidemiology is not your strong suit, is it?

ET: Wow, such a devastating refutation! Women and children are the carriers of the disease and men are not. The hormonal changes from male child to adult squelch the disease such that it is no longer a threat to anyone.

It isn’t necessarily a bloodborne pathogen.

It looks like it is going as we expected.

As can be seen by my post (of the week?? I'm needy... ;-) ) above, Dionisio used at least four threads as his personal diary (diarrhea?):

1) Mystery at the  hear of life
2) The "beautiful mechanism" by which an egg becomes an embryo
3) Rethinking biology: What role does physical structure play in the development of cells?
4) A third way of evolution
