Ouch.

I just tried to imagine a TV series written by k.e., 'Ras, and Louis.

eta: I think it would make Big Bang Theory look like Married With Children.

And NOW!  Presenting the Newest Reality Show HIT Series:  CULTURE CLASH!!!111

Cut to opening credits run over a montage of
Bowler Hat - for Louis
Coonskin Hat - for RAS
Penis Gourd - for k.e.

Todays episode finds our heroes visiting RAS on his home turf, and hilarity ensues as RAS teaches The Boyz how to cook one of his family's favorites, "Racoon Roadkill".  RAS has updated it with Paula Dean's help to include extra butter, but less salt for the "health conscious Englishman".

k.e. insists on adhereing to old tribal practices, and pierces another body part to "keep away evil FTK spirit" - and refuses again to give her edit button.

Louis misses his family so much that he takes on the 16 year-old Harrisson Triplets - by himself. (To be entirely fair to Louis, the hard living the triplets go through in RAS's neck of the woods, makes them look 32 years old.)

The ambulance however arrives just in the nick of time!

See y'all, and ta-ta till next week! :)

What we’re seeing now is a complete rejection of Darwinian thought not on the basis of any particular sect’s beliefs, but on the basis of clear thinking on origin of life issues based in first principles of reason.

LOL, but of course!

I think they stole the concept of "clear thinking" from the LDS, I clearly remember long before I was aware of the war on science, reading in one of their pamphlets how to apply clear thinking. It went like don't become contaminated, do not watch tv, don't let your eyes fall on anything that goes against your faith and so on.

BTW, we are approaching page 500. Will there be an Uncommonly Dense Thread 4 and who will have the final word here?

KairosFlatus is going to be eclipsed and left behind in the smarmy logorreah competition if he doesn't watch out.  vjtorley has come up with a 16 page, 7,384 word essay on H.L. Mencken, Gauguin and the god's graveyard.

Condensed version:

1) H.L. Mencken wrote a famous essay, "Memorial Service" in which he lists dozens and dozens of ancient gods who are forgotten today and invites the reader to imagine the fate of another powerful god, Yahweh, in a few thousand years.

2) Jerry Coyne (one of Torley's bete noires) recently quoted liberally from this essay.

3) One of Gauguin's paintings is titled "Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?”

3a) Gauguin's personal religious views were "highly unconventional".  Um, yeah.  Looking at Torley's own cite, "Gauguin was interested in and participated in a number of eclectic religious trends popular among intellectuals and artists of his time, including Spiritualism, the occult, Theosophy and Rosicrucianism. Eventually Gauguin became a convert to Theosophy and a member of the Theosophical Society. Gauguin "surrendered completely" to this new religion organized by Madame Blavatsky."  In Plain English, religiously, Gauguin was a total whack job.

4) Mencken "was a notorious atheist, a brilliant satirist, an extremely effective propagandist, a fine essayist and a writer whose prose style has rarely been equaled."  (He was also world famous for his essays and writings, unlike a certain Torley, but that isn't mentioned.)

5) BUT Mencken was no scholar.  He had only a high school degree.  (As compared to the totally unfamous vjtorley who was apparently a professional student like Dembski, collected almost as many degrees as Dembski and, like Dembski, couldn't find a job in any field he studied when he finally left school for the real world.  Dembski wound up teaching in a summer Bible camp, Torley is a part time English teacher in Japan.)

6) Most important: Mencken got several of the details wrong in his long list of dead gods.

7) Kilowords of blather on ancienct gods and Gauguin.

8) THEREFORE: Jesus will never die.

There's one reply so far, from Barry, gushing at the sheer wonderfulness of the essay.

I think Victor is fitting in very well at Uncommon Descent.

Regarding Gauguin’s second and third questions, theists have a psychological advantage over atheists in terms of gaining converts. Most people want to believe they are genuinely free, and that their actions are not determined. Most people also want to believe that their lives have a deeper significance and smehow matter in the grands scheme of things. Belief in a hereafter is a very natural human desire.

This is true to some degree. What I can't understand is why VT or anyone believes that, therefore, [particular brand of religion] is true. Isn't it kind of suspicious that most religions, past and present, apparently give humans exactly what they want?
Whether you sacrifice virgins to pacify the earth gods or declare after the fact that e.g. the Haitians had it coming because they had made a pact with the devil, whether a soccer player always wears the same shoes to important matches or someone knocks on wood, the structure is the same: If you behave in a certain way, nothing bad will happen to you. It suggests that you have some power over things that, objectively, you can't influence.
And if it doesn't work, that still doesn't mean that you had no power to begin with, it just means that either it was necessary in the grand scheme of things or you didn't sacrifice enough virgins.

Quote
Thousands of gods have come and gone. Only a few remain standing today, claims to the contrary notwithstanding), and monotheism holds sway over more than half the planet. But those which do remain standing are a doughty lot, and will not fade into oblivion, as atheists like H. L. Mencken assumed.

I agree with this one, too, although probably not in the way VT intended. IMO, religions will continue to exist, but they will also continue to adapt/be adapted. What does VT think why the Catholic church now officially accepts evolution, or why Dembski wrote his book about Adam & Eve bringing sin in the world kinda retroactively, or why the guys at BioLogos do what they do?

Quote
The next major battle on the Intelligent Design front is the battle for the human mind. We are in the midst of an intellectual onslaught, designed to convince young people that their every thought, word and deed is physically determined, that the difference between humans and other animals is one of degree and not kind, and that the concept of an immaterial soul is meaningles and has no place in modern science.

VT is kidding himself if he thinks the major fight is the one against atheism. IMO, they're fighting mainly against themselves. I mean what else is ID really than the acceptance that nowadays it doesn't work anymore to just proclaim that God did it in a certain way, all evidence to the contrary be damned? Why, if science is so corrupt and useless to find the really important answers, do they so desperately try to sound scientific if not in order to adapt their religion to a society that depends on science in every area?
Most of the UD denizens probably came to ID because they were looking for scientific answers that were compatible with their faith. In a way that shows that they've already "lost," because not long ago a purely religious answer would've been sufficient; but it isn't anymore.

Also, All Science So Far.

Please Mrs Dembski

I’m ready for the broom
Please, Missus Dembski, won’t you
Take me to my room?
I’m a good ol’ boy
But I’ve been sniffin’ too many eggs
Talkin’ to too many people
Drinkin’ too many kegs
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
I’m down on my knees
An’ I ain’t got a dime

Well, I’m groanin’ in a hallway
Pretty soon I’ll be mad
Please, Missus Dembski, won’t you
Take me to your dad?
I can drink like a fish
I can crawl like a snake
I can bite like a turkey
I can slam like a drake
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
I’m down on my knees
An’ I ain’t got a dime

Now, don’t crowd me, lady
Or I’ll fill up your shoe
I’m a sweet bourbon daddy
An’ tonight I am blue
I’m a thousand years old
And I’m a generous bomb
I’m T-boned and punctured
But I’m known to be calm
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
I’m down on my knees
An’ I ain’t got a dime

Now, I’m startin’ to drain
My stool’s gonna squeak
If I walk too much farther
My crane’s gonna leak
Look, Missus Dembski
There’s only so much I can do
Why don’t you look my way
An’ pump me a few?
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
Please, Missus Dembski, Missus Dembski, please!
I’m down on my knees
An’ I ain’t got a dime

Link broken. Direct to http://www.uncommondescent.com/science....-397626

In Ann Gauger's article http://www.evolutionnews.org/2011.......41.html
...barely explaining Meyers & Nelson, both links toward the end to Yarus' work on direct templating are busted or circular.

Occurs to me that, if someone wanted to attempt to discredit Bio-Complexity's peer review system, they would go over Meyers & Nelson with a fine tooth comb.

Perhaps someone needs to start a journal for papers that were rejected by peer review but are still high quality. There would have to be some strict standards though. Otherwise, the editors would be innundated with crappy work.

Auf die grüne Bank sich setzte,
Die gelb angestrichen war.

* I'm sorry. I'll never do it again.

Thus, a realistic [computer] simulation [of evolution] would allow the program, OS, and hardware to be affected in a random fashion." GilDodgen, Frilly shirt owner

Perhaps someone needs to start a journal for papers that were rejected by peer review but are still high quality. There would have to be some strict standards though. Otherwise, the editors would be innundated with crappy work.

One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight,
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other...

oder für die, die Deutsch können*:

Finster war’s, der Mond schien helle
Auf die grünbeschneite Flur,
Als ein Wagen blitzesschnelle
Langsam um die Ecke fuhr.
Drinnen saßen stehend Leute
Schweigend ins Gespräch vertieft,
Als ein totgeschossner Hase
auf dem Wasser Schlittschuh lief
Und ein blondgelockter Knabe
Mit kohlrabenschwarzem Haar
Auf die grüne Bank sich setzte,
Die gelb angestrichen war.

* I'm sorry. I'll never do it again.

How I heard it
---------------------------------------------

One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight,
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other

Two deaf policemen heard the noise
And came and shot those two dead boys
