Barry Arrington revealing maximal cluelessness

Quote

Quote
The opinions that are held with passion are always those for which no good ground exists; indeed the passion is the measure of the holders lack of rational conviction. Opinions in politics and religion are almost always held passionately.

Bertrand Russell, Skeptical Essays

Have you ever engaged with a Darwinist on the Internet who did not hold his views with a religious fervor?  Neither have I.  The Darwinists who frequent these pages might object that their views fall within neither of Russell’s categories, politics and religion.  Nonsense.  Darwinian true believers are just that — believers.  Darwinism is the creation myth of metaphysical materialism, as has often been noted.  Yet the zeal with which Darwinian views are advanced is inversely proportional to evidence that supports those views.  Lots of zeal; not much evidence.  Russell’s aphorism reminded me of several of the commenters here.

Yes, Russell got UD right, and BA realized that it applies to the "Darwinists" (not that it can't, yet it's not really typical).  But we didn't expect BA to apply even something that deliberately notes the passions of the religious to himself and the rest of UD, of course.  Russell does have more to say about the religious, though:

Quote
Owing to the identification of religion with virtue, together with the fact that the most religious men are not the most intelligent, a religious education gives courage to the stupid to resist the authority of educated men, as has happened, for example, where the teaching of evolution has been made illegal. So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence; and in this respect ministers of religion follow gospel authority more closely than in some others.

Wikiquote

I'm not sure just how much I agree with Russell's rather unrelentingly dim view of religion, as it happens, but the above quote seems appropriate for UD on the whole, at least.  If BA lacks the self-awareness to understand how Russell's quote applies to UD and BA, though, I'd note that the latter quote really only makes more explicit what Russell meant by BA's quote.

I would like BA's quote to be permanently at the head of UD.  I'd like it even better if the second quote were also included, but the first one will do, even if BA and his minions lack the self-awareness to understand how it applies to them.

I'm glad that I preserved Barry's wisdom for the ages.

ETA--not gone, oddly redated to Oct. 1, so buried.  The usual level of honesty still obtains.

Hi folks, good to be back!

I presume that since my last visit, creationism has been trounced and bounced outa town in my absence, and that Enlightenment rationality now brings peace, prosperity and advancement to all the good folks across the USA?

Sorry, couldn't make that out above your spluttering, say again?

Wasn't there a footnote on p. 14 about puddles of drool rotting the White House floorboards?

Maybe I'm mixing it up with Pandas. Religious texts all look the same after a while.

Glad to see you're still fighting the good fight here. Tell Barry I love him nearly as much as always, and keep burnin' them churches, Ebola boys ('n gals)

The Posted Without Comment thread is moderately amusing:

* Further to Glen Davidson's comment at the top of this page Barry expands the group of people who defend their views with "religious fervour" from Internet Darwinists to include people who do not deny anthropogenic climate change. It's the old story: when a creationist accuses others of being religious, it is somehow a Bad Thing.
* Despite giving the thread its title Barry adds a comment.
* Denyse seems pleased to announce that, for once, a claim like Barry's (evidence of climate change made nearly a century ago) stands up to more than casual scrutiny, referencing Snopes. Goodusername shows s/he has actually read the Snopes entry and noticed this: [T]he warming phenomena observed in 1922 proved to be indicative only of a local event in Spitzbergen, not a trend applicable to the Arctic as a whole. However GUN mentions this waaay too cryptically for UD and this comment raises no response.
* J-Mac, fresh from his retreat in victory at TSZ, asks how today's climate differs from the pre-flood one - this is treated seriously.

And it  continues, no doubt. UD link

That would explain why my kids have came to the conclusion that there was no real rainfalls before the flood…

Baby Jesus on a chariot pulled by unicorns! His kids is smaaarts. Only balmy summer daze in his household. No clouds, glaciers, snow, mist, fog, sleet, hailstones, convection, hurricanes, evaporation, rivers, creeks, trees, plants, antelope, bears, tree sloths, insects, rainbows or wind; did I mention SNOWFLAKES?

Pre flood according to J-Mac's household the world was just a deserted desert like the intellectual capability between their collective ears.

Any more thinking at chez J-Mac could lead to some serious discombobulation.

daveS @ 30,

In 1650, Bishop Ussher set a date assuming that Genesis is written as a narrative, and that days, years and genealogies are to be understood in their most common senses: a day is a day, a year is a year, etc. Since then, more than a hundred estimates of the timeline of Genesis have been made using the same assumptions, and their dates for key events are similar to his. Ussher’s date for the flood was 2348 B.C. The good Bishop didn’t provide any confidence intervals.

Here’s a creationist assessment of Bishop Ussher’s work: http://www.icr.org/article....trusted

Here’s an a/mat assessment of the intent of Bishop Ussher:

I shall be defending Ussher’s chronology as an honorable effort for its time and arguing that our usual ridicule only records a lamentable small-mindedness based on mistaken use of present criteria to judge a distant and different past…. Ussher represented the best of scholarship in his time. He was part of a substantial research tradition, a large community of intellectuals working toward a common goal under an accepted methodology….

The a/mat advocate who stated this, while disagreeing greatly with the content, was Stephen J. Gould. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki.......onology

So what do I think? I think the flood was recent enough that soft tissue from dinosaurs is still being found (https://uncommondescent.com/evolution/is-there-some-reason-that-paleontologists-do-not-want-soft-dinosaur-tissue/), and it probably occurred no earlier than 4,000 B.C.

Does a lot of evidence seem to falsify this? Sure. But other evidence, such as the soft tissue of dinosaurs, seems to confirm it and also seems to falsify the standard narrative of hundreds of millions of years.

The point is, which model of origins has the better set of timeline residuals, which are the differences between predicted values and inferred actual values? I think that ID and a recent catastrophe does. I’m a young earth creationist also, but many ID supporters are not, and I can and do work well with them, and applaud their progress made against a stiff daily headwind.

Not for the faint hearted

Stiff daily indeed. Mr. I only come daily (from Ohio) is on a quest. Leaving no stone or platitude  unturned he arrives at a consequence with no fork. Pleased with hisself he combines harvesters graining oats for all to see.

Poor man has never been at a seaside puppet show. For if he was he would (SHIRLY!!) know that a short sift through the sea shells would reveal a fossil of a sharks tooth not unlike his grandmother's false teeth (But without the high tech springs of George Washingmachine's false teeth).

For the love of all things that include deities and hopeless runs for mayoral office why is it that these non-arthropod invertebrate animals more commonly known as  legless stomachs...erm sorry worms, crawl over the parapets of civilisation?

Well Donald Trump that's fucking what.

Mr. Dean from Ohio reminds us that according to Ussher, the earth was created at noon on October 23, 4004.

That means the planet has a birthday coming up in ten days.

Did any of you even send a card?

Thought not.

I’d like to remind you that the framework regarding 800+ million of abortions per year is your initiative. I have simply questioned whether you had implied that atheists were responsible for most or all of the abortions. You refused to answer directly this question and now you’ve unloaded the burden of proof on me… with your unfounded insinuations that one religious county of almost 100% affiliation and 800.000 abortions per year proves nothing and so on…

Christianity claims 2.5 billion worldwide
Why don’t you look up the counties with 90-100% Christian membership, and the number of abortions in each of the country? Maybe your ignorance the the facts you have been refusing to accept will change…though I doubt that very much…

BTW: If you blame corruption within the church or religion, who is to blame? Also, that is not the true reason to blame atheists for the skyrocketing number of abortions performed mainly by Christians, is it?

KF reasoning: Bagpipes are played by men who wear skirts. Only transvestites and transgendered wear skirts. Transvestites and transgendered are sexual deviants and abominations. Therefore, bagpipes are the tools of Satan and must be erradicated from this world.

It’s hard to argue with the ‘bagpipes are the tool of Satan’ part, but the rest...

KF – doubling down, to further project a destructive misrepresentation put up in the teeth of duties of care to truth, fairness and more.

A misrepresentation of historical events? Maybe but . . . the information is freely available and people can check it out for themselves.

You obviously did not read what I linked or even what I put up in 66 with any care, twisting me into a handy strawman target to push into the scapegoated category.

Why are you taking this all so personally? I don’t consider your comments about what you perceive to be my position personally. I just disagree with you, that’s all.

I called you on it above, you tried to pretend you did nothing wrong. I put up the highlighted words in which you lied about me.

I lied about you? Really? I just offered my opinion. In fact I pointed out that what I was saying was not contradicting what your were saying. I just felt that it was worth considering some historical events. Obviously, in my opinion.

Your next move: but it’s just my opinion. FYI, you do not have a right to misrepresent another person by speaking with disregard to truth about them, especially in order to caricature them to win an argument.

I don’t think I did that. I didn’t mention anything personal. It’s fair to disagree with you isn’t it?

Worse, the wider context is that you are enabling a destructive radical secularist evolutionary materialist agenda that because it has no answer to the IS-OUGHT gap, has sought to smear ethical theism in our civilisation, the better to advance might and manipulation make “right,” “truth,” “justice,” etc.

Good heavens! I just felt that it was fair to mention some historical events which, in my opinion, provide a fuller picture of the effect the Christian faith has had. I’m not promoting anything especially not might and manipulation. I’m not going to take your interpretations of my actions personally because clearly you don’t know me at all.

In short, exactly the amorality- and nihilism- driven, domineering factions Plato warned against 2350+ years ago. Repeat: no, you have no right to put forth and double down on an “opinion” that is in disregard of truth and sets out to caricature and smear another

Well, how is anyone supposed to disagree with you without you perceiving it as a threat?

Maybe we should just leave it. The other readers can make up their own minds as to whether or not I did anything wrong.

Seversky, just at random, the Flying Spaghetti Monster parody simply exposes how ignorant the objectors are concerning the nature of being. An entity made up from such components will be composite thus necessarily contingent. God is a necessary being, and so the FSM parody is a case of preening on ignorance. KF
