DEnyse has a post up: Naturalist atheists rewrite history, scholar admits, due to bias against religion. It's a clear invitation for UDites to bash atheists. Fortunately, vmahuna steps in:

Note that “The Church” means, and has ALWAYS meant, The Roman Catholic Church. Any number of other sects, including some Protestant Christians, have NOT “accepted that the Bible could be interpreted in a non-literal manner”.

This is a BIG plus for Catholics: we’re expected to THINK, not just memorize.

Catholic Christianity is defined by the writings of Aquinas and Augustine, and the net sum of the, sometimes conflicting, statements from Rome. The Bible stories are fun reading, kinda like the brothers Grimm.

So, the Catholic response to a discovery of ET would always be: Can we send you some missionaries, or have you already been Visited?

And sidetrack the discussion into a theological argument. It seems like Denyse used to be Anglican, but is now part of the Catholic chapter of Agnostics for Christ.

Before sending  missionaries to some ET, make sure it's not the type of ET that has that book "How to Serve Man"...

If anybody would like to read the original To Serve Man story, it was published in the November 1950 Galaxy science fiction magazine.  The author was Damon Knight.

That issue is available for free download in a multitude of different formats  at Archive.org.  There are also stories by Isaac Asimov, Clifford D. Simac, Anthony Boucher and Fritz Leiber in the same issue.

All of the Galaxy magazines are available for free download here.

Better reading for your morals and sanity than Uncommon Descent.

P.S.  That story is famous partly because it was on a sixties television show.  Was it on The Twilight Zone?

Not Lurch, that was played by Ted Cassidy (among others).  The alien in TZ's To Serve Man was played by Richard Kiel who later became famous for playing the evil henchman Jaws in James Bond movies.

Well, thanks for setting me straight.

ETA, Kiel was the "ghost" on one episode of Gilligan's Island.  Pretty sure.

Can anybody imagine someone at UD conceding even such a trivial point?  KF would have 10,000 words about Plato and why Cassidy playing the role is necessary to stop civilization from sliding into the abyss.

If barry joined another law firm perhaps he changed the copyright line to make it less likely clients or partners would find UD. If you google his name, UD is the 9th link. If it drops 2 more, it's off the first page of results, so 99% of people won't see it.

Since they are not willing to learn teaching idolaters Cot analysis will not stop them from dancing around their complexity fetish. They even named their "journal" accordingly.
BTW Biocomplexity's current volume is still stalled 2016.

Biocomplexity was a legit journal that seems to have failed from lack of interest. BIO-Complexity is the ID Creationist one, in case anyone's confused. I know I was.

To be fair, there shouldn't be, as long as they have the systems in place to make sure any conflicts are avoided - the managing editor of the journal I'm a senior editor of always flags papers when there's an associate editor on the paper, or if one of the associate editors is at the same institution as an author.

That most papers have an author on the AE board just suggests that this is a small field.

And I'm sure they're following standard procedures.  After all, this is a respectable scientific enterprise.  In no way is it a cargo-cult operation to show the punters how sciency they are.  I don't know how anyone could suggest such a thing.

On the thread where Joe (ET) made his hilariously stupid "Just because someone can imagine it doesn't mean it's conceivable." remark, I got a new email address, a new wordpress login, and used a new IP address, and posted the following comment:

My comments were "in moderation" for a few days, then I commented "Why are my comments in moderation?" which was also placed in moderation. After a few days, the comments have disappeared without a trace.

I mean, I can imagine it. Maybe that doesn't mean it's conceivable :-P
