I have that track on this album. Not as swanky as owning the 78, but they did an excellent mastering job, given that the record is 86 years old.

Such a primeval song, sends chills down my spine when I'm in the right mood.

Haven't been to a real old time fiddler's contest since '69, I think, In Central Washington, where a very young Mark O'connor was starting to play.

Some of it is okay. There's a fine line between 'cool' and 'up its own arse' and it staggers across it  frequently. Plus some of them chords are real finger-stingers!

I could provide a version of the fiddle tune with the hum removed if someone has a place to upload an MP3.

Hi Gil: Did you listen the music that closed out the podcast? — some high-class baroque chamber music!

But, of course, I would be delighted to use some of your work.

the center for the renewal of science and culture is still doing neither.

i got to hang out with him a few hours at an Old Time Music Week thing I worked at a few years ago.  I dont understand how those guys get two or three strings droning so clear while still playing a melody.  you can't even hear the bow changing direction.

my fiddling sounds like the hammonds family compared to that.

If you are ever down here in Sooner Country, a trip to Guthrie to visit Byron Berline is highly recommended.  He and his band play one or two shows a month in a small room above the fiddle shop and they are alot of fun.

Interesting Trivia for Arden and Albie:  The guitar player's name is Jim Fish, and he used be the curator of birds at the Oklahoma City Zoo and, for a while, was at the National Aviary in Pittsurgh.

On the subject of funk, this is the best live concert footage of James Brown anywhere, which puts it on the short list of best live concert footage of anyone anywhere.

In the CD of this concert, the sound quality is vastly better. Catfish Collins' guitar solo is jaw dropping.

Different direction: Last night my kid rented and we watched Across the Universe, which is a wonderful exploration of the '60s built around covers of Beatles songs.

Really great stuff, and many of the covers underscore what brilliant song writers Lennon, McCartney and Harrison could be. Even heretofore corny stuff like "I want to hold your hand" is suddenly exceptionally passionate and beautiful.

Brought tears to my eyes.

It's gratifying that my 18 year old kid thoroughly appreciates the Beatles.

On the same page of youtube there's a pitifully short 'Cotton Eyed Joe' with Bruce singing: there's one moment where his raspy voice sounds like one of the strings. Can't tell the tuning, but it fit his voice gorgeously. Sent shivers up my spine.

Arden, that JB fotage is effing awesome. Love the Godfather.

Trying to bring it all together - some funk, live, from Abbey Road..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzyj3Wxhjr4

things to look for:
Dances like Chatterbox
Ostinato baseline.
The cheeky slide into into C11
Soaring strings...
Horns punctuating the piece.

edit to add bonus:

OMFG. If James Hetfield ever decides to pack it in, that guy just has to be the new Metallica lead singer.  Not only has Master of Puppets never sounded better, but I suspect this guy could still probably kick Lar's ass and keep him in line.

Surely SOMEONE hear must've heard some good music or acquired a scintillating and irresistable new ax since August of last year...right?

Despite the ongoing, er, global contraction (breathe, honey, breathe!).

If so, let us know.   ;)

I'm not allowed to buy new axes until after my renovation -which is a shame as a nice 'Old Hickory' Les Paul was on eBay a while back.

Oh, and Texas Chainstore Manager© are recording, but it's going very slowly. Have been told we sound like an ocean's 11 12 whatever soundtrack.

Big black guy trapped in a small white guy's body, which I believe has also happened to Louis.

The best bit is of course his dancing. He does this 'muppet sway' - I'm looking for the little metal rods guiding his 'hands'.

When I read that comment, I thought, "Oh yeah, well you should see Rick Astley!" And then, doh, I clicked on the link.

Susan Boyle stunned me. Amazing!

Incidently, my new album comes out in Japan on Wednesday 21st, in Europe on April 29th and 30th, and in the US on May 19th.

Some guy already put the whole promo album on youtube, if anyone wants to take a listen...

Just search "score to a new beginning". There's even a playlist...
