Darwin's Downfall bites the dust. He survived repeatedly poking the LackofFocus bee's nest without anything more serious than a scolding or two. He make fun of BatShitCrazy77 once and he is banned. BatShitCrazy77 must have some compromising pictures or recordings of Barry. I would like to think that it involves some homosexual activity.

In the awful "The Incoherence of Materialism, as Demonstrated by Ayn Rand" thread, V.J. Torley shows up to correct He-who-must-never-be-corrected.

Barry, however, will have none of it:
Quote
Dear Dr. Torley,

Thank you for your comment at 13. But it reinforces, rather than undermines, the point of the OP. Rand’s writings are one long exercise in monist “cake and eat it too” incoherence. She was a pretentious charlatan and an intellectual fraud. And boring. Did I mention boring? God help anyone who has to read her books.

One of your most admirable traits is that you are willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Allow me to suggest that when it comes to Rand, there is no doubt. She was, at best, a second-rate thinker and a horrible philosopher.

Barry is that special personality who tells you straight-faced your careful demonstration of where he is mistaken actually shows the very opposite. And not only is he right, but the subject he raised is a load of crap and not worth discussing further.

In that post, Barry wrote the following:

"So whence the title of this post you might ask."

Anyone who uses such language is about to write a huge steaming pile of bullshit.

Funny thing is, he is not too far off [ETA: really, he's spot on] in describing Rand as incoherent and boring. Of course, Barry is far far worse in both counts.

Seeing the words "Off Topic" I expected to actually read something about ID research.  You can imagine my disappointment when I saw a book review that Barry reposted from 2009.

He shouldn't be allowed to get our hopes up like this. The excitement could be bad for my aging heart.

Infallible interpretation of poetry written by human beings using a large amount of poetic license in their writing? And quite likely intending it to be, well, poetry?

Or am I missing something?

IDists think it's prose because it doesn't rhyme. It should come with a finger guide.

Heh, I was raised not to make fun of such people but I had to smile at UD regular Marfin engaging another in conversation, apparently quite unaware that the original comment was posted over seven years ago.

To an extent. It actually comes from the 17th Century Catholic Church ...Congregātiō dē propāgandā fidē. Four hundred years later and the fundies are trying to resurrect faith using fake news.

I've never heard of the word anatid but there is ....
Anatidaephobia:-
A person suffering from this condition feels that somewhere in the world, a duck or a goose is watching him/her (not attacking or touching, simply watching the individual).

Now that brings back horrible childhood memories of not a skein but gaggle of vicious geese on the family farm.

I'm guessing anatid is the singular of anatidae.

I used to have that fear crop up occasionally. I finally overcame it by imagining that the duck was too busy banging Lea Thompson at that moment to care about whatever it was I was doing.

Hi Barry, Origenes and kairosfocus,

I’ve just written a lengthy reply, but it appears to be in moderation, so you may have to wait a while to read it. Sorry about that.

Plato’s theory of abstract forms was wrong from top to bottom. Including the ethical conclusions he drew from them. For some reason, you never include those conclusions. But even you should know this, despite your continual touting of Plato as the last word on ethics.

How dare you blaspheme against Plato. Have you not heard about his cave?

Rhyme, and puns.

For example, the name Satan derives from "sha tar" = to wander or accuse, this and the derived Hebrew noun "sha tan" is cognate to the Akkadean verb “shu-ut” = to wander.  The plural of "wanderer" became the name given to the Emperor's agents (“shatan”= to accuse) who were sent secretly to find and execute disloyal governors and other officials. They acted as tempters posing as merchants etc. They were also called the "Emperor's Wandering Eyes."

So, in the preamble to the Book of Job, the God of the Gods (“el elohim Yahweh” or “Yahweh, the God of the gods”) asked his wandering eye agent Satan ("il’shatan," literally translated is "God’s wanderer"), where he had been. The Wanderer, "I have been wandering, Lord God, wandering and accusing on the Earth, said God's Wanderer."

And it rhymed.

Nevermind allusion, alliteration, interpretation, illusion, simile, metaphor, magical reality, metamorphosis, onomatopoeia, mythic tropes, dreams out loud, speculation, superstition,  symbology, subjectivity, families as we know not, power,  the seven sins in spades, poverty, disease, death, starvation; not to mention floods, drought, war, rape, passion, insanity and addiction. Today's cutting edge poetry is rap music accompanied by interpretive dance . I would speculate  in biblical times your modern music and dance would be a strange curiosty to the deeply superstitious mud hut villagers living on dried orange peel and a baked locust or a freshly caught lice.Tribal totems have no meaning today. All of that and what do we have for post modern fundamentalism?  Nothing the fundies can offer that's for sure.

The charred waste of a cultural crematorium, I fear is upon us. A virtual Trumpian Bonfire of the Vanities.Look, don't take my word for it, it's in the bIBLE.
