Dembski:  Neither my wife nor I regret going. It was an education. Our kids are resilient. But the ride home raised a question. We found ourselves avoiding talking about the event until the children fell asleep. Then, as they drifted off in the early morning, we talked in hushed tones about how easily religion can be abused, in this case to exploit our family. What do we tell our children? I'm still working on that one.

Or like how some people want to undermine the entire foundations of science education by pushing "Goddidit" in lieu of the scientific method?  Yeah Bill, we're still working on that one too.

But you must know how to conjugate the verb "To abuse religion"?

I/we never abuse religion.
You are abusing my religion.
He/she/it/they are vile abusers of religion and heretics that deserve nothing but persecution and condemnation.

My irony meters have been off and buried in a bunker since FTK pitched up claiming we're close minded and biased....

Exactly. In Dr. Dr. D's mind, he's truly doing God's work. It's the faith healer who's abusing religion and making it look bad. Nothing will ever convince him otherwise.

Can we invite DDrr.. Dembski, Dave and Denise to somekind of festschrift for the 1000th page of this thread?

If it wasn't for them and their quick trigger finger on the banninator, their tolerance of cognitive dissonance, and atrociously bad writing, this thread would not exist, and the world would be a much less amusing place.

Just putting the idea out there...

I like your idea, BUT...

If Dr. Dr. D, DaveScott and Dense-ee O'Leary were they type to post on a board like this one, they wouldn't be the type of people that they are - and then where would we be?

QED.

But it would be funny as hell!

We could give out awards and stuff..

Most Baninations For No Reason - DaveScot
Most Banninations For Disagreeing with Banninator- DaveScot
Most Published Photo Of A Sweater - EVAR - Dr. Dr. D
Most convictions for Killing The King's English - Densye O'Leary
Most Use Of Biblical Quotes in defense of a "Scien^tific Theory" - BornAgain77
DodgeBall Winner - FTK - for dodging everyone's actual questions.
Miss Gullibility - FTK for her acceptance of Walt Brown's half-baked theory
Best Flounce Out - FTK
Best Flounce Back - FTK
(Looks like we have a BIG winner right here!)

Please feel free to add your own!

Worth a thread as we approach The Big 1,000?

Aside from being the kind of wonderful guy who wishes fatal diseases on us, calls himself a psycopath, and fantasizes about beating evolutionists, Dave makes threats about hacking the board here, and so he's on the shit list. Dembski, I don't know if Dembski's banned or not. I don't think he is. If someone can confirm that he's not, maybe invite him to say a few words at the commencement for page 1000. Since lots of people will have lots to say in response, though, might be better to invite him to the inauguration of Official Uncommonly Dense Discussion Thread 2 (working title).

Could this be some sort of a "Dawning of a New Age" moment?  ATBC-OUDDT nears its thousandth page and Mike Gene calls it a day and retires from the scene?

Now if Salvador turns up in the arms of a really big guy with tatoos named "Steve" ...

Speaking of Dembski and the faith healer, there's one thing that has always bothered me about religion.  I first noticed it as a child when I saw a picture of a religious procession somewhere in Europe, Italy I think.

It was a group of village people in their church clothes walking through the streets carrying a platform with the Virgin Mary on it - a 3d figure of her sitting on a chair.

In the procession were several priests, in their fanciest robes, and half of them were wearing big black Buddy Holly style glasses.

And I remember thinking then, "Wait, you're worshipping the greatest power in the universe, a Being that you claim is both all-powerful and all-knowing, a Being you're counting on to heal you while you're on earth and take you away to paradise when you die and you're praying and processing and doing every thing you can think of to make him like you and help you - and he can't even cure your nearsightedness??

Something wrong here.

Yeah - I think that was right before Mary created the Miracle That Is Lasik Eye-surgery.

Egads I hope not! I'd like to be able to credit Dembski with more intellectual capability than that troll.

There is a clear hierarchy of tard there, I would hope that someone with two PhDs was not some obtuse moron with a fixation on the tu quoque fallacy.

Perhaps I'm too much of an optimist.

BarryA: Faith and Reason: Everyone Has Faith.

Once again, the Wheel of Life completes a turn. And once again, the argument begins anew. With the mind clear of all obstacles, all remembrances washed away, it's as if these arguments are being made for the first time.

Quote
BarryA: Everyone Has Faith.

Let's start with the false dichotomy. In BarryA's world, there are theists and materialists. But some people think the world is completely meaningless, or gibberish, or unending irony, or an illusion, or simply don't care.

Quote
BarryA: Materialists have faith just like the rest of us.

Reaffirming the false dichotomy.

Quote
BarryA: One standard of proof is an “apodictic proof.” A is greater than B and B is greater than C. Therefore, A is greater than C.

That's not a proof. That's the transitive axiom of inequality. In other words, it's an assumption.

(Transitivity isn't applicable to all comparisons.

         Eyes over blond.
         Blond over curves.
         Curves over eyes.
)

Quote
BarryA: The self-created universe is a logical absurdity.

No more logically absurd than particles appearing and disappearing in the quantum vacuum.

Quote
BarryA: Therefore, there must have been an uncaused first cause. The conclusion follows inexorably from perfectly reasonable premises.

The Cosmological Argument was quite refreshing a few millennia ago.

No Zach, if you create one big meta-explanation, that takes less faith because you don't have to bother tying anything together after the fact. By making it completely divorced from reality, you also don't have to waste your time looking for it.

The 'a priori commitment to materialism' charge is always funny. Try living your life any other way - it would either be comedic or tragic.

Well, I did a little research, and can not find any member names listed as:

Dembski
W.A. Dembski
Super-Sweater Man
Baylor Boy
Dr. Dr.
Pompous Stick Up The Buttocks
Mr. ID is NOT Religion, Cuz I Said So

Although there IS a "WAD of ID!"

Bottom line - Yeah, but I also seem to recall seeing Dembski post here a couple of years ago... maybe a "Guest Poster" handle as he responded to Wes?

I am sure he would not bother to respond to anyone without at least 1 PhD.

DaveScot: Any more problems with the physics involved in how the water cycle transports heat from the surface to an altitude above much of the greenhouse blanket?

Water vapor is an important greenhouse gas. One of the primary mechanisms of global warming is that when CO2 causes the Earth to heat, it then causes increasing evaporation, which causes more heating.

There are a lot of unanswered questions with regards to cloud formation (esp. cirrus), but qualitative handwaving, no matter how confident the waver, won't answer these questions.

Not found worthy to post at UcD, I just wonder here:

Is Dave saying that

1. As the planet gets hotter, it will evaporate more water.
2. More water will transport more heat away from the planet to be radiated into space.
3. Because of 1) and 2) the planet will get colder, problem solved?

How nice that Denyse should take this moment to look back on seven (7!!1!) years of ID progress with these fond memories:

- Covering the acceptance of the Nobel Prize by DDrr.. William Dembski.

- Coverage of the death of Darwinism at the time predicted by the good DDrr..

oh, sorry, never mind. But equally impressive:

- ID now means exactly what we say it means. Most of the time. In Google hits.

- Helping create the NCSE.

- ID has successfuly captured the mindshare of legacy media as a shorthand for crank.

Accomplishments, in sum, that no Nobel Prize can equal.
