Ultra-right and ultra-religious loony Sam Brownback is retiring from the Senate so that he can run for governor back in Kansas. But since this is Kansas, someone ultra-ultra-right and ultra-ultra-religious is running against him in the Republican Primary. Here are some of Joan Heffington's choicer positions.

The state should require public school instruction in Christianity as long as teachers continue to press the case for evolution in classrooms, she said.

Also from the article:
Quote
Her running mate is Mark Holick, pastor of Spirit One Christian Center in Wichita. Holick made political news for posting on the church's marquee a declaration to America: "We have a Muslim president. This is a sin against the Lord!"

The cynical amongst us might think that this is a ploy by Brownbackers to make him look more reasonable...

Wow.

I guess if I were going to create a sock puppet somewhere I'd need to really go over the edge.

Are they real or are they a product of salmonella poisoning and a bad acid trip?

I'd say, "Thank goodness I live in Missouri!", except for the fact that we have this guy running for Senate.  Still, over all, I think Missouri politicians are ever so slightly less loathsome.

Crikey!  That guy comments here as "Rounder". I suspect that he has Larry Farfarman's vote, based on what he posts there. I wonder if Larry gets an absentee ballot out there in la-la land...

shit; I have to scrub my eyes with HCL now.  I guess the one positive is that they're not too concerned about running a campaign with a total of $200.00.

Don't know where this belongs.

Francisco J. Ayala, an evolutionary geneticist and molecular biologist who has vigorously opposed the entanglement of science and religion while also calling for mutual respect between the two, has won the 2010 Templeton Prize.

PZ give this a lukewarm review, but Ayala is a pioneer in the fight to keep creationism out of schools.

To that end, in 1981 he served as an expert witness in a pivotal U.S. federal court challenge that led to the overturning of an Arkansas law mandating the teaching of creationism alongside evolution.

JoeG BTW dumbass- some variations help ensure reproductive fitness so they cannot be random wrt it.
