Did they get that from some actual research, or make it up?
(I don't know enough to rule it out, since it sounds like something that could happen.)

This remark, quoted in the article, is not likely to be reproduced at UD:

The idea "seems by far the most likely" explanation for the function of the appendix, said Brandeis University biochemistry professor Douglas Theobald. "It makes evolutionary sense."

Baylor calls police, presses charges, seeks sanctions, and moves faculty office to the basement of the Engineering Building. “This has nothing to do with the Professor’s protest,” says Baylor spokesman.

Dembski Writes:
Quote
Here’s an interesting conference with some top-notch speakers on a topic central to ID. I wish I could make it.

Hmm, sounds exciting? Maybe it's some of that often promised "research". Could it be?

Quote
Advances in single molecule methods have resulted in the exciting, burgeoning field of single molecule biophysics. These approaches have been exceptionally important in studies on molecular motors, the biological machines essential for providing force and movement in living organisms. Leaders in the field will present studies that reveal new behaviors and molecular details that are obscured by traditional ensemble-based approaches

Ah, of course, as BornAgain77 will shortly tell us, ID predicited this. And 12 other things too. That makes 13? I wonder will BornAgain go to 13 on his list? Or will he jump to 14, the lilly livered so and so.
I think I see why Dembski is interested in this. It's something to do with the bold part above. Hmm.
No doubt whatever is said or done there ID will declare it a victory.
And I strongly suspect that when Dembski says:

Quote
I wish I could make it.

He really means
Quote
I wish I was invited

OK, OK, so anybody can go for $75
Spoilsports :)

I have an ex who did a lot of research on myosin motors. She might actually be at that conference.

No reason Dembski should be there, though.

I had a boss onetime who Dembski kind of reminds me of. This guy was amazing. He f'd up every human interaction he was associated with. It was stunning. He never failed to do something improper, creepy, disgusting, etc. Coworkers traded stories. If someone was telling you a story about him and you were impatient you would say, 'get to the part where he totally bones the whole thing up.'

You just wish someone could step in and make him act like an adult.

Okay, I don't wish that at all. I like that this big foe of science acts like an angry brat. Still, it makes you wince sometimes.

R.Bill:

They did make note of the "It makes evolutionary sense." comment regarding the appendix.

The context was "Ha-ha, the Darwinists are clumsily trying to deny this crushing blow to their house of cards!"

Ricky Gervais made a mint off of writing and starring in a  TV series where he played someone with Dembski's sensitivity to the nuances of human interactions. It is possible to make money with that schtick, but you may need to know that it is parody.

Again, Larry Cranston hits the bulls-eye and inexplicably breaks through the moderation filters:

Let me get this straight. Dr. Dembski takes the high road and posts an apology about the Baylor/EIL affair.

Then this gets posted? I presume this is intended as humor, but this does nothing to raise the level of discourse.

The next thing you know, someone will be making fart jokes.

Holy crap.  What's the over-under on when this gets purged?

Maybe it'll give him a rare moment of clarity?

Plus, we've got it here. And more folks read us than them. I hope Dembksi enters into dialogue regarding this... so he can put his other foot in.

I can't believe it.

Dembski's "apology" is not even cold and yet another insult is hurled at Baylor.

And, btw, have all the IDiots forgotten that EvolutionaryInformatics.org is still "alive" and well on the web?  All they talk about is the Baylor web.

Psssst!  IDiots, it's over there ---->

Too bad some of us have alternative means of getting UD posts after they're deleted.

By taking down Galapagos Finch's post, aren't they doing the sort of thing they were moaning about?

I'll be posting their home phone numbers if they don't put it back up. Also, brace yourself for the first wave of media coverage...

I'm thinking the Marks post was something like an appendix on the undulating colon that is UD. It became inflamed, and now has been removed.

Not sure where that image is coming from.

Only a few more posts to go before Dembski gets his apology pushed off the front page at UD.
Of course it depends how many more posts he thinks the better of and deletes.

How come it was begoned so fast? Do you think he posts it, smirks, comes over here and reads the way it's interpreted and realizes to his horror that's true and more believable then his attempt at humor and so scuttles back and deletes it?

I mean, why was it deleted and the thread wiped? What kind of disorder is the King of ID keeping his court of imbeciles in?
Sharpen up your game Dembski, you want posts to push the apology down the page and not up! You might want to enable moderation for new blog posts too.

bornagain77: Hardly a useless, leftover, vestigial feature!

A vestigial structure is one that has evolved to lose most or all of its original function. That doesn't mean it doesn't have some function. Indeed, we expect that many structures to have been *coopted* for other functions.

bornagain77: As well,,The vestigial “legs of the whale are actually essential attaching points for muscles that are necessary in the birth of whales…

Yet, they are clearly vestigial as they are not longer used for walking. That doesn't mean they have no function. Ostrich wings are vestigial with regards to flight, but are no doubt important for balance when running.

Paul Nelson: The Appendix Finds A Job. Or Had One All the Time…

The appendix is vestigial because it is homologous to organs* found in other mammals used for digesting plant matter, and because it no long has that function in humans. This does not mean it doesn't have a function, and *cooption* for other functions has long been suggested.

According to my sources, what happened is that John Lilley (pres of Baylor) faked a letter from Botnik to Dembski complaining about the article, because it was too funny.  Dembski didn't want to upset Botnik's feelings ('coz he's nice like that), so he took it down.
