OTOH,  I'm  a bit worried now that PZ may have a framed picture of his wife and/or kids on his desk at work.   THAT DESK WAS PAID FOR BY AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!ONE!!!ONE. PZ SHOULD ONLY HAVE OFFICIAL WORK DOCUMENTS AND TEACHING MATERIALS ON HIS TAXPAYER SUPPORTED UNIVERSITY REAL ESTATE!! BELOW ARE THE HOME PHONE NUMBERS OF SOME OF PZ'S COWORKERS. PLEASE PHONE THEM, PREFERABLY IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS, AND SHOUT AT THEM!!!

I'm curious about DaveScot's religious beliefs. It was my understanding that he was an agnostic, but his recent posts seem to me the words of a theist. Has he converted? Or perhaps he mistakenly believes non-denom theist and agnostic are the same thing.

Before I was banned over at UD, he responded to one of my questions by saying he believed in the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas.

I don't know exactly what that is, but it's not agnosticism. Perhaps DaveScot was confused by the similar sounding words "Gnostic" and "agnostic."

DaveScot has, predictably, as much of a grip on networking as he has on biology. I am truly shocked.

Not that that has ever stopped him pontificating on a subject before, of course.

Threatening to hack the place is more than enough of a bannable offense, don't you think?

Not that I think he poses much of an information security threat to anyone but himself, considering he doesn't even seem to grasp filesystem-level access control...

DaveScot: Oh goody. Myers is now lying about it on his website. He denies the cracker article is accessable from his faculty webpage.

DaveScot provides no link or direct quote.

Quote
Reg: No he doesn’t. What he said was  “notice how they [Catholic League] repeat that you can access my post from my faculty page, nicely avoiding the fact that the post they find so offensive is not hosted on any university server”. He did not deny the cracker article was accessible from his faculty page; he said that the cracker article was not hosted on university equipment.

Notice Reg provides a supporting quote and link.

Quote
DaveScot: No, that’s not what he said either. He said you couldn’t access the article from his faculty page. His faculty page is down. He did not say it wasn’t hosted there just that you can’t get to it from there...

Myers lied by omission by not saying it was true until very recently that you could access the article from his faculty page.

DaveScot still doesn't bother to provide a quote.

Quote
Reg: This is different from your earlier claim that Myers lied by commission; saying the cracker article was not accessible from his faculty page. You are now saying that Myers was lying by omission; not saying that the cracker article was accessible from his faculty page. For clarity, what specific lie are do accuse Myers of?

I don't think that's too much to ask. Thanks Reg.

well, ...

I revised my earlier opinion, and I might do it again.

What are we to say?  That a tax supported school should not allow faculty to say things like that? Wrong. Should a tax supported school say the things PZ is saying vis the Eucharist? No. They should not say this about Vishnu. They should not say this about the rituals of Chak, or the Mayan Ikesh.

No, PZ can say what ever he likes on his own blog. If he said some of the things he says on his blog in his classroom, I would have a serious problem with it as it would be "creating a hostile workplace environment."

At some point, some student might take advantage of that vunerability PZ has created for himself. If the university wants no part of this fight, then they blank links from their official operation to PZ's "private" writing.

As an anthropologist, I have attended all these sorts of rituals and more, and I found them to all be sincere expressions of the partisipants' beliefs. PZ has crossed the line between promotion of his point of view, to that of bigotry.

PS: I hope that PZ doesn't learn the hard way that I was right about Paul Mirecki. There are a lot of Catholic cops, and Lutherens too.

Yeah. What kind of bigots say its silly to issue death threats over a cracker. I can't believe anyone would say that. There are clearly no more important issues in the world to worry about than weather or not some student ate his magic cracker.

I'd be perfectly content if PZ would just put a visible disclaimer on his blog drawing attention to the fact that his views are his alone and not that of his place of employment.

I mean, let's be honest, PZ does go *out of his way* to try to piss off anyone who believes in a higher power.  He's a bigot.  period.

The worst thing about him is that he absolutely feeds the hard core religious right who are looking to point out the antics of the villiage atheist mentality.  PZ = exactly what they are looking for.

Buy a dictionary. Read the definition of "bigotry." Read PZ's post.

Try this: Walk into a VFW post. Go to the bar (just follow the sound of people). Drop an American flag on the floor and piss on it.

When you come to (hopfully), ask your self, "Self? Why should I be surprised I hurt so bad?"

Unless undertaken in the pure spirit of a scientific experiment in social psychology, you action would be bigorty, merely because it was to denigrate the beliefs of others.

People react to symbols and ideas as if they are real objects. The empathic response experienced (by healthy people) of wincing while watching a video of someone being injured is actually triggered by the same parts of the brain that are active when a (healthy) person is injured.  "I feel your pain" other than as a political slogan, is really sincere. TV shows like "America's Funniest Home Movies" or "Jackass" are rough indications of the number of people with psychopathic personality disorders. (It is an over estimate for several reasons).

I am not  sure irreverence to the dearly held symbols of others qualifies, at least not according to this definition.

Then again, I read his original post as a PZ styled confrontational commentary to the events surrounding the original wayward wafer, so I might be reading into his words things that aren't there. Or blinding myself from things that really are there rather.

Well, most fundies think that public universities are all dens of satanic evilutionism already. But, it is fairly standard to state that "The opinions expressed here do not reflect the policies or opinions of my employers, the University of ...."

How hard is that?

An Alpha Male is trying to tie PZ's personal blog to the university in an attempt to silence him through some form of administrative fiat.  Alpha Male said it, FTK parrots it.  What more is there to understand? She is a good little girl that way.  She stands by her men.

You are not sure?

Irreverence is to ask that the Host be served with cheese whip because you hate the taste of raw meat. "Hatred and intolerance" is:
Quote
So, what to do. I have an idea. Can anyone out there score me some consecrated communion wafers? There's no way I can personally get them — my local churches have stakes prepared for me, I'm sure — but if any of you would be willing to do what it takes to get me some, or even one, and mail it to me, I'll show you sacrilege, gladly, and with much fanfare. I won't be tempted to hold it hostage (no, not even if I have a choice between returning the Eucharist and watching Bill Donohue kick the pope in the balls, which would apparently be a more humane act than desecrating a goddamned cracker), but will instead treat it with profound disrespect and heinous cracker abuse, all photographed and presented here on the web. The first issue is that someone disrupt a church service- how about hoseing a Baptist service, they like water. And then, provide PZ with material simply to insult people.

Look, If some priest wants to test God's wrath, I'll piss on a stack of hosts. But, I'll not encourage people to trash church services or property.

There are plenty of godless liberals teaching in our universities.  How the heck does that = a disclaimer disassociating his views with those of the University of MN?

Honestly, I don't think the University of MN has a problem with bigotry against religion.  I'm sure they've  received letters regarding his rants in the past.

Can you imagine if his rants were focused on blacks or Jews instead of Christians?  Holy crap...shit would hit the fan!

And, all the while PZ is preaching tolerance, tolerance, tolerance...for homosexuality, for atheism, for bestiality, for abortion, etc., etc.

But, it's always open season on Christians.

I like PZ, even when we disagree. However, he is using his position as a minor public figure to incite people to violate religious services so that he can publicly cause pain to others (symbolic pain hurts).

I am afraid he is going to discover that I was correct in my assesment of the Mirecki case.  (Maybe he will remember that I am a professional investigator, as in paid to investigate crimes).

I'd be perfectly content if PZ would just put a visible disclaimer on his blog drawing attention to the fact that his views are his alone and not that of his place of employment.

The title of his blog:

"Pharyngula: Evolution, development, and random biological ejaculations from a godless liberal"

And you think there is some ambiguity regarding who's views his blog represents?

????

Oh Bullshit FtK.  Oh the po' lil' Christian cilluns who own 90% of the public offices, and wealth of the most wealthy and frightening nation in history.

Stupido twato

(edited to correct grammar)

?????

I'm talking about PZ and his preaching...not the entire nation's attitude toward Christianity!

IF THAT MAN WANTS TO PREACH TOLERANCE, THEN HE HAD BETTER GOD DAMN WELL SET AN EXAMPLE OF TOLERANCE.

GOT THAT!!!?

Fuck.  What's wrong with you?

Crap...now you went and got me all riled up, and I'm going to have to go back to my blog and read Proverbs *again*.

A disclaimer would be a fine thing. Disclaim away, one and all.

But are you (Ftk) really saying that because there are plenty of godless liberals teaching in our universities that it is in fact unclear to whom "godless liberal" refers in Myer's blog subtitle? And for that reason a disclaimer is required?

Disclaimers of this sort are designed to insulate parties from legal liability. They make the implicit explicit, however obvious, for that legal purpose. Legal language is often tortured (in this instance by redundancy with the obvious but implicit) because it is intended to serve this purpose. A can of insect repellant doesn't state "not for internal use" to prevent internal use. It states it to protect the manufacturer from liability when some idiot inevitably uses it internally.

In this instance the implicit is completely, unambiguously obvious with or without the disclaimer. Want proof? Even Ftk gets it, which is saying a lot:

How about you read the whole book starting with "When God began the Creation..." Or as mistranslated in the KJV, "In the beginning ..."

Do about one page per day, and come back when you finish.
