Richard Dawkins is coming to Michigan State University Tuesday, March 2nd. His talk has completely sold out the Wharton Center theater, and they even took the step of selling seats in the balcony, something that usually doesn't happen for lectures.

I'm in communication with the speaking engagement organizers, and I've requested having a brief opportunity to talk with Prof. Dawkins, results to be posted to PT. I don't know whether I'll actually get a spot in his busy schedule, but in case I do get a chance to ask a few questions, I thought that I would open the floor here for suggesting questions to pose to Prof. Dawkins. No promises... I don't even know if I will get closer than across the theater at this point. But there isn't much time left before the lecture, so go ahead and post your softballs and posers now.

"You have promoted the notion that social concepts are hereditable as "memes" following similar paths as genes.

Formal linguistic studies would insist that languages "... are descended from some one prototype," to paraphrase Darwin. "But analogy may be a deceitful guide," as he further observed.

Do you imagine that the development of human cultures is reducible to chemistry?

I think Richard is pretty tired of talking about memes. He only used it as an analogy of the replicator, which is what he was really writing about.

What do you think about the blatant lying and slander from those who proclaim moral superiority?

I'm appalled about the blatant lying and slander from religious antievolutionists. I expect Dawkins is, too.

This is probably off-topic, and isn't really a question. I just had to vent about how irritating it is when theists complain that Dawkins takes a superficial approach to critiquing religion that doesn't take into account really complex religious traditions like Buddhism or neo-paganism, that atheists who dare to criticize religion are "fundamentalist" and "militant", and when they insinuate that Dawkins is the atheist pope whom all atheists are required to worship.

Okay, I feel a little better now.

Ask him how when he thinks the proportion of US citizens who deny evolution will drop below 50%.

Around 2004, according to the Gallup poll.

ETA: Actually, taking your question literally requires adding in the "don't know/no response" category to the numbers, which means that Gallup has never seen more than 50% reject evolution.

I didn't get my own time to talk to Dawkins, but I was able to hear the lecture and the Q&A the following day, plus get some photos.

Notes from the lecture

Didnt know where to put this:
Basically, Dawkins is the nicest guy ever.  He didnt charge OU a penny for speaking here, his reasons are his own.  But he didnt want to toot his own horn (IM SO NICE! LOOK AT THIS CHARITY IM DOING! LOOOOOOK! LOOK AT ME!!!), so we kept it a secret.

But then we found out that several OK legislators, OKC area religious radicals ('pastors'), and none other than Ray Martin, this little piggie lookin kid that brought OUs IDEA club back to life, were filing LAWSUITS to find out who donated the money to bring Dawkins to campus, where Dawkins put the money, etc.  Wonder who gave em that idea?  *flips off Caseyfag again*

Dawkins is such a gentleman.  And Im stuck here with fucking hogs in sport coats.

The lulz.

Brilliant!

And eminently worth saving for future use too!

Thanks for the post, and thanks for keeping us updated here and at ERV.

BTW - Are you gonna be able to keep us posted about Dembski's return to OSU?

I got a chance to hear him speak at Duke yesterday, and got this shot from my seat in the 8th row.

Dawkins spoke in Houston tonight and I was there only >this< far from the Dawk.

He's still quite lucid I'm glad to say!

He got a big laugh after describing a hypothetical radiation of animals from Noah's Ark, then apologized for using "a sledgehammer to crack such a small, fragile nut."

I need to make a ringtone of that.
