Via Inside Higher Ed: Study Tracks Erosion of Conservative Confidence in Science.

Surprise, surprise, it's not really evolution, but their own selfishness - they like what butters their bread, but hate what may give their adult children bread (e.g., government regulation on emissions).

This is why the FTK-Luskin argument that "we have more kids than you Darwinists, therefore we'll win" is ridiculous. Reality will cram the "global climate change hoax" (and enforced vaccination) down their children's throats.

I haven't had time to read this yet, but it looks interesting, relevant to ID, and it open access so even GEM of TKI can read it.

If anyone would like to summarise it, please do so that I don't have to read the paper myself. :-)

The DOI you requested --

-- cannot be found in the Handle System.

Possible reasons for the error are:

the DOI has not been created
the DOI is cited incorrectly in your source
the DOI does not resolve due to a system problem

The DOI you requested included a trailing slash character (/) which may be incorrect. Click here to attempt to resolve the DOI without the slash. Please note that a DOI with and without a trailing slash are different identifers and will likely return different results.

it works - but the two links point to the same document, the abstract that took me less than a minute to read. (Understanding is another matter;-)

10^14 free floating planets per galaxy, harboring life??

http://www.sciencedaily.com/release....217.htm

Sir Fred Hoyle is popular with the ID crowd for his "tornado in a junkyard" phrase, and the implied fine tuning argument in the stellar nucleo-synthesis of carbon that supposedly made him a Deist.

His panspermia ideas, not so much.

Here, Hoyle's longtime collaborator continues to work on the panspermia concept, hypothesizing that a huge number of free floating planets formed early in the life of the universe. These planets could host life, and as they transit through solar systems could be responsible for mixing the biological component of the entire galaxy.

Of course, all this has done is push back the difficulty of the origin of life question to a remote time and place in the universe.

True that, but it could also more than double the time available for OOL, and provide more options for chemical environments and energy sources.

Georgia State mostly correct on fair use

Quote

A federal judge in Atlanta has handed down a long-awaited ruling in a lawsuit brought by three scholarly publishers against Georgia State University over its use of copyrighted material in electronic reserves. The ruling, delivered on Friday, looks mostly like a victory for the university, finding that only five of 99 alleged copyright infringements did in fact violate the plaintiffs' copyrights.

"My initial reaction is, honestly, what a crushing defeat for the publishers," said Brandon C. Butler, the director of public-policy initiatives for the Association of Research Libraries. Given how few claims the publishers won, "there's a 95 percent success rate for the GSU fair-use policy." The ruling suggests that Georgia State is "getting it almost entirely right" with its current copyright policy, he said.

True that, but it could also more than double the time available for OOL, and provide more options for chemical environments and energy sources.

I only looked at the abstract, but it seems that he assumes life will form on mostly hydrogen planets. This life will survive the process of the hydrogen being stripped away over long ages. The left over rocky planets will then have sufficient probability of collision with solar system debris during transits to exchange biological material.

It seems to be a tottering pile of hypotheses.

Interesting open source paper-

The evolutionary history of protein fold families and proteomes confirms that the archaeal ancestor is more ancient than the ancestors of other superkingdoms

http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-21....13

The justification for a new approach: "... the use of molecular sequence information for deep phylogenetic analyses is limited by mutational saturation, differential evolutionary rates, lack of sequence site independence, and other biological and technical constraints. In contrast, protein structures are evolutionary modules that are highly conserved and diverse enough to enable deep historical exploration."

Results:
"Here we build phylogenies that describe the evolution of proteins and proteomes. ... These trees defined timelines of domain appearance, with time spanning from the origin of proteins to the present. Timelines are divided into five different evolutionary phases according to patterns of sharing of FFs among superkingdoms: (1) a primordial protein world, (2) reductive evolution and the rise of Archaea, (3) the rise of Bacteria from the common ancestor of Bacteria and Eukarya and early development of the three superkingdoms, (4) the rise of Eukarya and widespread organismal diversification, and (5) eukaryal diversification."

Conclusions
...primordial metabolic domains evolved earlier than informational domains involved in translation and transcription, supporting the metabolism-first hypothesis rather than the RNA world scenario.

.. phylogenomic trees of proteomes reconstructed from FFs ... show that trees reconstructed from ancient domain structures were consistently rooted in archaeal lineages, supporting the proposal that the archaeal ancestor is more ancient than the ancestors of other superkingdoms."

Thoughts?

I guess the simple reply is that if Eukarya and Bacteria share a common ancestor, the Eukaryotes and Bacteria that have diverged least from their respective common ancestors would be the closest.

In this paper, the individual points aren't labeled, so I don't know what those should be.
