The whole Larry banning issue is a little complicated because he uses AOL.  At least one other banned user used AOL to bypass his ban, causing us to block some AOL IP ranges in February.  This was after Larry had begun to post under different identities, like "Andy H".

When looking at the banning of the other user mentioned above, I noticed the Larry/Andy H/etc. thing as an infraction of our comment rules.  This led to his IPs being placed in our ban list.  This didn't work because he was using AOL.  Not only was he still able to comment under multiple identities but other users were suffering collateral damage.

In mid March, I tried a different technique and banned a couple of his aliases.  Larry responded by coming up with new identities to avoid the ban.

At no point did Larry email the admins about his inability to post.  Had Larry done so, some of this could have been cleared up.  Now its gone too far, and I doubt we'll change our decision.

And your emphasis on the word "believe" tells me there's more to the story than what I can research independently.

The emphasis is there simply because of Larry's self-indictment that he thought that he was banned as of the early date but continued posting. A person who isn't sociopathic and believes themselves to be banned from an online forum does not insist on attempting to circumvent the procedures and facilities used to effect that ban.

Yes, Larry is well and truly banned from the comment system at PT. His misapprehensions may have played a role in his initiation of unacceptable posting behavior, but the fact is that he has violated PT comment rules and is not welcome there any longer. Any comments known or strongly suspected to come from Larry that appear on PT will be unpublished as they are recognized. Responses to such posts may also be unpublished or moved to the Bathroom Wall at the discretion of the thread contributor or administrators.

Larry seems to have a non sequitur going with his obsession over PT's SA Web Award. SA doesn't require recipients to even have online comment facilities, much less that rulebreakers be allowed to continually abuse a comment system at their whim. And SA seems to only rarely recognize a website in multiple years. In fact, the only instance I have yet found is the "Becoming Human" site, which received awards in 2001 and 2002. If SA asks us about any complaint that Larry might make, we will simply provide them with every comment Larry has made on the system, including the various aliases and obvious attempts to evade his banning, the threats made against the system, and our comment policy. SA will easily be able to verify the massive abuse of the comment system made by Larry. I rather doubt that any rational human being would find merit in such a complaint from a person guilty of such blatant abuse, and that has nothing to do with outlook or viewpoint.

PT's comment system, by and large, works well. In two years, the number of non-spam bannings is less than 15 total, and that includes today's ban of "jonboy" for repeated plagiarized comments. Non-sociopaths have found the minimal constraints of the PT rules not to be a problem.

BTW, we're just trying to establish the chronology of how Larry got himself banned, not trying to get him reinstated or anything like that.  Specifically, what happened that got him posting under multiple aliases.

One last question.  What is the message that you get when you try to post from an IP address that has been banned by PT (as opposed to the message you get when on an IP address that is on the external database), and how does it differ, if at all, from the message from the external database?

People from banned IPs receive a message similar to this:  "You are not allowed to post comments."

If the username has been placed in our spam filter, they will receive a message that their comments are in the moderation queue.

Wesley,

The system by and large works. It is unfortunate to have to ban anyone who is interested in learning or sharing ideas but it's not like PT is known for dropkicking posters who challenge the party line. I would give kudos to PT for presenting current affairs in biology and the wingnut faction who hates in an open and honest fashion. Wingnuts certainly do have the chance to defend their positions. If they prove to be unable to do so, oh well.

What thread did jonboy muck up? Are his comments still available?

Re: 'jonboy', the thread was, "The God Meter", and the problem was a whole series of plagiarized comments from a variety of different sources. The crew felt that leaving plagiarized comments would amount to tacit approval of the plagiarism, so they've been unpublished.

I'm sure Davison and Springer got the idea to post at Larry's blog from this thread. They're so unoriginal. They depend on us for all their new ideas.  :p

Besides, you can bet DaveTard is not happy with the competition.

If you're too persistent in arguing against the party line PT admins will begin deleting your comments without warning or explanation. In my case they also disemvoweled comments but I think they stopped that because it can't be hidden.

A normal reaction to having comments that have broken no rule deleted is to change your name so your comments aren't targeted by who wrote them. As soon as you do this and they figure it out they match up IP addresses and ban you for breaking the rule about using multiple screen names.

It's actually, in every case I've seen, a matter of Panda's Thumb admins being the first to break the rules. They break the rule about comment integrity first and then when a rule is broken in response they ban you for it.

If they weren't lying about all this I wouldn't give a shit. It's their blog and they can ban whoever they want. It's the lying about it being an open forum that annoys me. It's not open to persistent disagreement.

Surely the above comments deserve some sort of Irony/Comedy Gold award?

It has certainly gone up in my book above Uncommon de-Scent. Although I will always enjoy reading the UD wingnuts' toolbox over there, I will enjoy commenting on Larry's Blog even more where Dave can't do the bye bye thing . What better person to host a good debate than Larry? Maybe Thordaddy, but he get's into bizarre gay/abortion/military stuff.

Even though there will never be another Uncommly Dense, I except Larry's blog to become a haven for banned UD posters (in short, a hotbed of lunacy).

Dense O'Leary is now commenting on Larry's blog.

Official Uncommonly Dense Discussion Thread is officially starting to feel anxious. It senses this thread may evolve into a serious competitor.

Oh, Larry's so cute!:

I prefer to discuss evolution from a scientific standpoint. That is what attracted me to irreducible complexity -- it uses scientific arguments to challenge evolution.

Denyse O'Leary, good god, every loudmouth dimbulb who ever nattered on about ID is popping up there. I think this is going to bleed a lot of traffic off from UD. It'll be just like UD but without an abusive ex-Marine kicking every other person out for 'displeasing' him. Sadly, I suspect Larry totally lacks DT's fvcked up sense of humor.

Has Heddle shown up there yet? Someone let me know when Josh Bozeman finally surfaces.

Fair play to Larry,

So far he is permitting open discussion. DS will hate that. :D

As much as I disagree with Larry, his blog is at least entertaining. I am looking forward to inevitable tiff between DS and JAD.

Oh my god. Neutral territory where DT and Davison can spit venom at each other without interference. I hadn't thought of that!!!

Do let me know if something like that happens. You'll probably be able to tell something's about to heat up if Davison calls DT 'Texas white trash' again.  :)

The more I think about it, the happier I am Larry has started his blog. At PT, he was just an annoying, humorless freak who shlt all over the rules. In charge of his own blog, with all that retiree's spare time on his hands, he has the opportunity to truly blossom, to become fully realized.

This too pleases me.

So I'm still reading Jeeves in the Morning, and it's delightful. And it occurred to me, Arden Chatfield, that your name is very Wodehousian. It really does sound like the perfect name for a hale fellow, well met.

So now Davetard, Larry F, and JAD are all pissed at each other.

http://www.blogger.com/comment....0081726

that didn't take long. I'm reminded of someone's comment that militant little groups seldom succeed in their ambitious plans because they spend all their energy infighting and splintering and such.

I kinda felt like starting my own "creationist" blog just to attract all the morons from UD, sit back, and laugh my a$$ off.

Now I see someone else has done it for me.

Heh, looks like my anonymous post comparing Larry's blog to Comedy Central sorta sent JAD off the deep end.

That thread's hilarious.

No, JAD was already there. In fact, that's where he lives.  :p

It's official. I'm having more fun reading Larry's blog than UD. Dave is simply too stupid to keep my attention for long. I'm on to bigger and better things. Heddle needs to respond there to reeally get things going. Also, Larry will need to get more posts but hopefully we can help him out with ideas.

Yeah. You can post a nasty thing and then delete it, it's a dirty trick but, at least it's gone. One thing though is that you have to have a blogger ID to be able to do it so you know it's one of the posters.  It can be turned off. I leave it on on my blog because it doesn't seem to matter. I have only gotten two or 3 spams and all the comments I get are off the wall. Also, the comments get emailed to the admin (Larry) so he knows what they were. If you suspect that they were bad, ask Larry. He'll probably tell you.

Oh I don't care about the content, I just think it's best to not let people like Davetard edit their own comments after the fact. I think that ability may cause some trouble in the future.
