USA vs. England is set to start in less than hour.  To all of you Anglo-Saxons out there, allow me, an up-jumped Yankee colonist, to apologize for the brutal, humiliating defeat you are about to experience!   :p

You should check the John Oliver segment of yesterday's Daily Show...

EDIT: linky

And France will suck, as always!

Is "worldcup" that the game where little men in shorts run back and forth alot without ever doing anything interesting?

The one with the drunks puking in the stands and then killing someone?

I have heard about it.

I've got no patriotism for you, but I can manage childish taunts.

Soccer is a game for 22 or so overpaid bottom dwelling scumbags who think that kicking an inflated bladder about a field somehow entitles them to the entirely unwarranted adulation that the simpering hoardes of fuckwitted slatterns and slackjaws bestow upon them.

In other words, it's not a real sport like rugby. So fuck them, and all who sail in them.

However, we will not be talking about the rugby because some upstart nation of abo bothering convicts has tucked up dear old England again. The fuckers.

Good thing I'm not bitter.

After watching most of the game I now know why soccer(football) fans are drunks.

Can't France just drop it off as well?

No, you beat us in the rugby recently. Your punishment is to stay until at least the semi finals.

And you have to watch the matches. All of them. Even the obscure ones.

Louis

ETA: Anyway, your lot won the damn thing in 1998, which is at least in recent memory. The last time our shower of overrated cockends managed to lift the trophy was 1966 and they still won't shut up about 44 years later.

Speaking as a newly-naturalized Yankee colonist I have to say do find it hard to open the eyes of the locals - brought up on a diet of Armored Rugby and rounders - to the finer points of the Beautiful Game.

Rugby itself, of course, is a sort of brawl concocted by a bunch of public school yahoos who were too inbred to be able kick a ball and run with it at the same time. "Oh, I say!  Just pick up the dashed thing!  Haw, haw, haw!"

Under the circs, a one-all draw is a result even if the keeper gifted the Yanks a goal.

Oh, we're aware of it.  It even made the Daily Show, as SD mentioned above.

Soccer/Football is just not high on our sports hierarchy.  It has gained some popularity, but it still ranks down on the list.  If a miracle occurred and the US team made the finals I think it would generate a lot of excitement.

Right now we are in the midst of the NBA finals.  My Celtics are playing the Los Angeles Lakers tonight in game 5.

True story.  Four years ago, I was managing the transfer of several production lines out of a factory in Monterrey, Mexico. I had a status conference call scheduled to overlap with one of the Mexican team's World Cup games. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that the call needed to end early.  No ifs, ands, or buts. It did and I even watched a little of the game.

Really, you lot need educating about the beautiful game, you really do.

although we did'ne qualify this time, we've had our fair share of triumphs. 1982 in particular when we beat the mighty Spain and eventually got to the quarter finals:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1085nzrIeIU

We've even beaten England on the odd occasion:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpD5SlNs2Ac&feature=related

and Norn Iron did produce one of the best footballers (not saccer players) of all time:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4380332.stm

Quote
Former football star George Best has died in hospital at the age of 59 after suffering multiple organ failure.
Best, who was admitted eight weeks ago with flu-like symptoms, died at 1255 GMT. London's Cromwell Hospital said it ended "a long and very valiant fight".

Son Calum, 24, who had kept a bedside vigil, said: "Not only have I lost my Dad... we've all lost a wonderful man."

The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star is to be buried in Belfast beside his mother, Ann, late next week.

Best's father Dickie, 87, who was among relatives at his bedside overnight, asked for the family to be left to grieve in peace.

He died far too young:

I actually played youth soccer back in the early to mid-1970s, right when it was starting up in earnest here in the United States.  I wasn't very good at it and, after 6 years, switched over to Little League baseball.....only to find out I wasn't very good at that either.

No question.  One of the best ever and one of the few British players who was just exciting and beautiful to watch.  Gazza was another at his best.

Too many British strikers seem to find themselves in front of goal and get over-excited.  They take a wild swing at the ball and it either soars harmlessly over the bar or, if they manage to keep it low, drive it straight into the arms of the keeper.  This is unlike Continental or South American players who seem to be able to rifle in shots with pinpoint accuracy from any angle or distance with effortless ease.  The bastards!

I tried it too, save that I spouted off how some players, that was the first time I ever played soccer/futball/whatever, got special treatment.  They're the ones who'd been playing it all their lives and could sprint much faster than I.

I told the coach, an English transplant, to his face and in front of other parents that he did play favorites.  I was off the team for being "too disruptive".  I guess that was the "AYSO" way of finding a way around the "everyone plays" BS of the time.

Hated "soccer" ever since.

Under the circs, a one-all draw is a result even if the keeper gifted the Yanks a goal.

I felt the wind came out of the sails a bit when Milner got booked and Capello inserted Shaun Wright-Phillips. I have no ill will toward SWP (except that he's a shadow of the threat Lennon poses on the other side), but that forced Gerrard back into the holding midfield spot instead of attacking (which would have given that American defense fits, as I had hoped the goal in the fourth minute was merely a preview).  Lampard had one flash of quality, but was otherwise dismal (that free kick was wretched), and I think he'd fare better with Stevie moving up anyway.  Here's hoping Barry is fit soon.

The back line is a bit spotty.   Johnson did well pushing up the wing, Terry was solid, but though I'm biased as a 'Pool supporter*-- Carragher just doesn't have the pace to keep up with some of the strikers England will face beyond the group stage.

Rooney wasn't awful, but apart from him, they don't look terribly frightening in the attacking third.

The goalkeeping was obviously dreadful.  Fuck Everton-- that goes without saying-- but Howard is miles better than anything England could put in goal.  It's a miracle West Ham didn't drop if that's any indication of Green's true quality.

Nonetheless, should be an easy six from Slovenia and Algeria, and it'll depend on who they draw in the next round.  If they play like they did on Saturday, they won't beat anyone else.

Well, I can't understand American football at all. I've been told it's something similar to Rugby League but all that padding ??????

Still, it was quite popular over here a while ago.

We've a good Ice Hockey team now:

http://www.belfastgiants.com/

But they're mostly American. It's strange listening to Americans with semi belfast accents, though not the same as Graham McDowell.

It's not quite the same the other way around.

har.

testicles 1, united snakes congress 0

the problem with the currently running "athletic" event, The Girl Cup, is that in the United Snakes, for decades, it was only played by high school girls.

and there's not enough scoring.

both my chirrens played soccer and some of us more enlightened (from georgia?) parents decided that you could add some serious excitement and high scoring if you simply eliminated that damn "off sides" thingee.

introduce a fast break, the long bomb, the homerun kinda excitement to a dull, boring, furrin game.

we want to see some: UKwimps 19, USnakes 21,
kinda scores.

1 to 0 victories are like baseball.  might be amusing to play in the game but watching that crap is mind numbing.

and as for those of you who sneer at amerikan football, it's guarant-damn-teed that a foot will touch a ball at least twice a game.  at the beginning of each half.

you should also remember that the game was changed in the early part of the 20th century because it killed too many people with the manner it was played back then.

now where did i leave my beer....

At first I was a bit apprehensive about Pratchett writing a book on football, but it turned out to be very enjoyable (especialy since the Ankh-Morpork version of football is somewhere between rugby and a game of soule).

Indeed it is. When I said testicles and hobnailed boot however, I wasn't refering to the metaphorical testicles of decisiveness, courage and action, all of which are lacking in parliament too. I meant the real testicles of some members of parliament who like to have the crushed under he hobnailed boot of a well paid prostitute during a session of sadomasochistic cock and ball torture.

You can say what you like about our politicians' principles but they are undeniably capable of a good sex scandal. Some of them even have wide stances too....or better, secret partners getting their rent paid. Some of them even go looking for badgers. Gawd bless 'em.

Don't apologize, you can't skip it. In France, though, we don't have the commercial. But when I'm in the UK with Alicja, I'm not even allowed to watch the clips.

And since 2 days ago (and my new laptop), I get an error #2046 when trying to see videos on the daily show website.

I'm on windows 7 (64bits), using Firefox and the ever-crappy Adobe Flash plugin.

Anyone got any idea how it could be fixed? I need my Daily Show and Colbert Report!

then enwimpened: smaller field and an extra down.

The opposite, actually, the Canadian game is more open and tends to favor lighter, quicker linemen in particular.

Unless by enwimpened you meant something like enfattened :)

Apparently the smaller field arose because Harvard didn't have a rugby field available when the game was first played here.

Yeah!  El Pais first led with "Spain crashes against Switzerland".

About an hour ago they had a subhead saying something like "the 'selection' (national team) played for an hour like a team shooting blanks, and paid with anguish before the Swiss".  The story leads something like "an error of conception leaves spain in a state of anguish" - looks like the coach is going to be in for some heavy fire!

My prediction:

Rajoy of the rightish People's Party will say that the Socialist government is to blame, and that the PP will step up efforts to force Zapatero to call an early election.

If the team loses again, the coach will be burned at the stake in Madrid's Plaza Mayor.

Among the Mexian soccer fans I know, the hot rumor is that the balls being used are non-standard and that this is why more goals are being scored- the goalies cannot "read" the new ball's spin, or bounce.

Paranoia, or is there some possible basis?

Can't wait to see the look on Domenech's face. Maybe he'll finally start learning gardening, instead of pretending to be a "sport" coach...

Seems the ball is 400 grams, slick as a post-McDonald floater, and very fast*. They are not the first to complain.

BALLZ!

Cameroon a country where for everyone Sunday and soccer are the same, beaten by a bunch of Geishas - bah!

If 'Japon' played there they would be beaten hands down since the ball is made of plastic shopping bags wrapped around a blown up condom played on a field filled with craters, rocks and players with bare feet.

If they don't get some points the CFA will devalue .... hmmmm my love notes might go up..hey might be a win-win.

On a brighter note the frikken Socceroos got at reaming by the Übermensch...so guess what?

The Ozzies are patting the Kiwis on the back fr getting a point!

Like we need to reminded that having a tiny dick is a prerequisite to be one.....

Still, we feel their pain.....oh wait....

I'm just underwhelmed by the half hearted antipodean unironicly named 'All Whites'.

Appart from dissing the All Blacks the greatest rugby players in the world its milk toast.

How about the Rampaging KIWIS?

A blind nocturnal, flightless bird with nostrils in the end of its beak that eat's root's shoot's and leave's.

Crikey even the Aussies respect us for that!

Just ask one who's invited us to a barbeque.

By now you've probably seen "the look".
But there's still a chance!
If France wins 3:0 against South Africa and Mexico loses 0:2 against Uruguay, you're still in!
Good luck with that...

Of course, I'm offending my relatives in South Africa by saying all this, but I point out that it really would be better as a whole for the sport if more Americans came to enjoy it.

Friends of ours are heavily involved in youth soccer here. Tyler is a member of the national champ team for his age group. Since he'll be in the tenth grade next year, college recruiters are lining up already. They have visited all the older members of his team.

I'd make a bad evil hun horde member in any case. I imagine that pillaging and such is only fun the first few times, then it's just work like everything else.

If the USA wins against Ghana then your next opponent is either England or Germany.
It's slightly annoying. I could make a number of jokes that build on this constellation but all would require that I'm confident that Germany wins against England. Which I'm not.

No. They did a bang up job against a really strong defense. In fact, they played to form - really smart.

That's not correct. The USA-Ghana winner will play the winner of Uruguay-South Korea. England and Germany are in the other bracket - they could only meet up with the US in the final or in the consolation match. See bracket at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_knockout_stage

You're right, of course. Wishful thinking in action...
I'd much prefer Germany playing against the USA in the quarter finals then against Argentina or Mexico (assuming that Germany wins against England).

Heh. Good point.

Unfortunately, for some reason, Green warmed the bench the last two matches, so he probably won't play against Germany either.

It's our Pearl Harbor complex.

Ah well, personally I'm happy that Ghana's made it to the last eight.

And there will be a good match tomorrow, Argentina vs. Mexico.

I won't bother watching the other Sunday game.  The outcome's pre-ordained.

How long before Sarah Palin blames Obama for the loss?

Obama = Kenyon = Country Of Africa

added in edit:

Thoughts On Watching Soccer:

1.  What an exciting match.  Tomorrow I will have even MORE fun watching some paint dry.

2.  USA Soccer should consider recruiting more Theater Majors.

3.  WTF???!!! USA Soccer should consider recruiting ONLY materialists... I couldn't even count the times that some player kicked the ball the length of the field, hoping that god would work a miracle and put the ball into the net, right past the entire other club standing and waiting for the ball.  Guess what.  Miracle's aren't happening, and neither I nor whatever god you might worship, care a fig that you are praying for a miracle.

4.  USA Soccer should consider recruiting people with knowledge of geometry.  You can not kick the ball where your team mate is... you must kick the ball where he is going to be.

5.  USA Soccer should consider recruiting people with more intelligence.  Of course, if they had brains, they'd be playing baseball or rugby...

The result of the first game today was ... as I thought ... pre-ordained, and I didn't miss a thing not watching it.

Did England have Green in goal again, or is their other goalie even worse?

I do not believe that our goaly was to blame. Our attacking was better than Germany's but their defense was incredibly better than ours. Hey-Ho, out we go. At least the team actually tried this time, I can live with that.

I think that every German goal was 1-1 on the keeper, that is the out-players fault, not the goalkeepers IMO. He did make a fair few good saves.

Yes, James played well. TBH, the Germans did too, but we were denied a goal by the linesman, and their 3rd goal should have been stopped for offside.

Ah well, I sense a clear-out in the England ranks (but possibly not of their oldest player!). We've got a relatively easy group in the qualifiers for the next Euros, so there's time to let new guys find their feet.

Ah, well, not much that a goalie can do under those circumstances.

Meanwhile, Argentina's been awarded a goal with a player terribly offside.  Followed by a good goal due to a terrible misplay by a Mexican defender.

Good.  No need to watch the second half, Argentina will just play keepaway.

And fall down a lot... I'm still laughing at how stupid soccer rules are, as evidenced by the USA - Ghanna match, where a Ghanian player fell down when nobody touched him and pretended that his leg/ back/something was broken.  He laid on the ground moaning until he was hauled away on a stretcher.  Upon reaching the sidelines, he jumped off the stretcher and was fine.

So, IMHO, soccer will suck until they take care of this type of BS.

Oh, I don't know, the NBA survived Bill Laimbeer, whose flopping skills were far better than any soccer player I've seen.

But, yeah, they need to do more.  They do issue yellow cards when the referee sees it.   The basic problem is you have one ref trying to see the entire pitch.  A suggestion I've seen that I like - when they review video of a match, penalize the worst of the divers.

We Americans have had little notice of this minor distraction from baseball. It is merely the intellectually impaired unable to recognize a "hit and run" until well after the out, or extra base scored, that agonize for the obvious play of foot the ball.

The result of the first game today was ... as I thought ... pre-ordained, and I didn't miss a thing not watching it.

Did England have Green in goal again, or is their other goalie even worse?

Oh, well, just wait 'til next year, you'll lose at the rugby world cup, too ...

:(

Capello's innovative 0-4-2 formation was a much bigger factor than the keeper.

Oh yes, I said poopy pants. I'm not afraid to go there. Oh yeah. I went there.*

We Americans must endure nearly a month until we cleanse our national palate as armored rugby/handegg training camps begin.  We can then enjoy 6 months or so of glorious dreams until the Cowboys choke in the playoffs.

We Americans have had little notice of this minor distraction from baseball. It is merely the intellectually impaired unable to recognize a "hit and run" until well after the out, or extra base scored, that agonize for the obvious play of foot the ball.

I'm actually a baseball fan too, having watched the Cardinals while trapped in the frozen tundra that is a Missouri summer during grad school.  I even enjoy hockey, though no one down here even recognizes the word.  Football, though, is what I watched as a kid with my family, so it benefits from an entirely emotional bias.

I do suspect that the lack of distinct plays is a factor in why soccer hasn't caught on here.

Oh indeed. Some of which, I am lead to believe, involve intimidation to the point of causing foreboding in the victims.

Foreboding and, dare I say a certain sense of amazement.

Foreboding, amazement and a rather keen sense of loyalty to the Pontiff.

I shall re-enter the narrative at a more apropos moment.

The Uruguay - Ghana match had an unbelievable drama at the end of the additional time.

Ghana had a real chance to score at the last, 120th minute.  Uruguay managed to repulse the attack, at the cost of a red card and a penalty kick, which Ghana missed.  Uruguay won the shootout.  Ghana dominated the overtime and should have won.  Too bad.

Interesting strategy, taking a red card rather than allowing a goal. The goal was certain. Penalty kicks score 84 percent of the time.

The guy who stopped the goal won against the odds and won the game for his team.

Yeah, and barely made it in.  Possibly it might've without the change in direction.

Most importantly, though, Melo screened his goal keeper from the ball, preventing him from knocking or punching it away.  My guess is that the goal keeper won't be buying Melo beer anytime soon.
