Tardmeters around the world registered a strong uptick this morning, indicating an influx of fresh, unscreened tard in the environment.  The source was traced to a naked singularity in the tard field that had escaped from the UD bunker and was last seen at Telic Thoughts.

Dear Unspecified Telic Entity! Make the warning bigger! I just read that and am now going to have to go and clean my brain with a platinum bursh and aqua regia.

My question is how in the heck you managed to trail that thread to its current conclusion, after such a long, meandering, strange thread?  Not for noobs or the faint of heart.

Twenty years ago, as a PhD scientist, I intensely studied the evolution versus intelligent design controversy for about two years.
Didn't ID run under a different name back in 1988? Something starting with "C" and ending on "ism"?

Is that Roy Spencer the same Roy Spencer that is a global warming denier?

Same question for Zachriel.

(Oh, and we are on the wrong thread, but what the heck, anything to get this tired old warhorse of a thread up to 1,000 pages*, where we can give it a decent Viking burial: put it on a burning boat, set the boat adrift in the middle of the internet, celebrate with mead and wenching as we watch it float off into the mist, and then await the thread's as-yet-unnamed successor to arise Phoenix-like from the ashes- which oh crap are floating down the bloody river, now whose stupid idea was that anyway...)

Shouldn't Dave had made a comment that Creationists use the term Darwinism and they have yet to produce a definition. Scientists study evolution.

I looked in at this thread and started giggling thinking that some sockpuppet had hit upon the idea of leaving open format tags to turn UD into a more complete and visual tard wreck.  I scrolled up to see who had done it - kariosfocus.  First he left off the close italics tag then, a mile of italics later, he typos a close bold tag.  Random errors - and not ID - is the best idea they've had over there in weeks.  LOL.

Is that Roy Spencer the same Roy Spencer that is a global warming denier?

Yes, the same Roy Spencer who works with John Christy at University of Alabama, Huntsville (or some appropriate expansion of "UAH", might not be a comma there).

The two who first published satellite temp reconstructions about eight years ago that claimed to show a cooling, rather than warming trend.  Touted by the Wall Street Journal and others as "the wooden stake driven through the heart of the AGW myth".

The only problem was that they'd made a few errors in their calculations, including one rather embarrassing sign error.  Took others years to ferret out their various errors (and the errors in the corrections they made to their first errors).

As it turns out, another outfit, RSS, who took the lead in exposing the UAH team's errors, has for years now published their own reconstructions.  Both they and the UAH gang's now show warming that's roughly consistent with the ground station record.

So now Spencer's off on some whacky pseudoscience stuff to "debunk" AGW.  For instance, all the CO2 is coming from the ocean, not our burning of fossil fuels, despite direct evidence to the contrary (such as "look at all that fossil fuel being burned!", and isotope evidence, acidification of the ocean showing uptake of CO2).  And there's some weird mechanism letting all the heat leak out of the troposphere into space.

Etc etc.  Total whackadoodle stuff.

So it's not really a surprise that he's a creationist, is it?  If it's still surprising, maybe the fact that both he and Christy are devout conservative fundy southern baptists will lessen the surprise?

(though christy is far more honest about climate science, taking more of a "it won't be bad" stance than the outright denialist position, and if he's a creationist has had the good sense to be quiet about it).

CJYman provides an excellent analysis of a 'straw man' argument, a fallacy of equivocation. First, he shows how Expelled redefines "Darwinism", then how that redefined term leads to Hitler and the Holocaust.

Quote
CJYman: It seems to me that “Darwinism” as it is defined and used in Expelled is explicitly materialistic. Since materialism is a philosophy, Expelled is showing what evolution combined with the materialistic philosophy {/anti-ID framework} has accomplished as evidenced in Hitler’s application of Darwin’s materialistic hypothesis to society.

Great work, CJYman!

Quote
CJYman: Expelled *did* show how a leader took a scientific idea and applied it to society.

That would be a pseudo-scientific idea. As you know, dressing an idea up in the language of science doesn't make it science.

Quote
CJYman: Sure, people who claimed to represent Jesus made up some pathetic and horribly selfish excuses to “Crusade.” However, they went completely against the foundational teaching of the One with who’s name they identified themselves. They represented Jesus’ teaching in no way, shape, or form!

So those who "took up the cross" were not Christians. Nor was Martin Luther a Christian, then! Nor most of Europe through most of the history of Christendom. Nor most modern day church-going Americans.

Ah, they're not *true* Christians. Another fallacy of equivocation. Great work once again, CJYman!

kairosfocus on education and politics:  (link):

Quote
What I did say on education is that we need to soberly recognise that “schooling” has now by and large become indoctrination in highly dubious — and destructively incoherent — evolutionary materialist secularism, and that this extends to the media, policy, courtrooms etc. I therefore put up that those who are concerned should by now have removed their children from the schools and colleges that are propagandising them [and this extends to for instance Global Warming etc too] and set up an alternative system.

Similarly, we should all remove our support from the propagandistic so-called mainstream media, and boycott those who put advertising money into supporting such systems.

By now there should be a comprehensive K - College alternative education system in place, and in effect a large scale, well-supported alternative economy and media. ...

On politics, I first of all spoke to the responsibility of all Christian citizens of the US to register and vote their biblically instructed consciences. That could in principle be enough to fix the rot, and peacefully. For the general election is in fact an institutionalised potential — thankfully, peaceful — revolution and point of accountability of officialdom before the people they serve under God.

But if, and when, such reforming actions are confronted with oppressive force and attempts to subvert or destroy the alternatives — totalitarians, historically, seldom yield power without fighting — then I pointed to the precedent set by the principles of interposition by lower magistrates, using the USD DOI of 1776 to make my point.

Yikes - that's pretty radical, but I like it when these guys come right out and tell the truth about what they think.  Tear down the educational system and take over at the ballot box - where have I seen that before?  Oh yeah, Kansas.  This year, for instance, Kathy Martin, one of the creationists from the last science standards debacle, is running for BOE on a platform that includes continuing to fight materialism in the science curriculum and support for private and home schooling.

There are lots of people who think as kf does.  It's a bit scary.

There may be alot, but when it gets right down to it, I don't think there is enough of them to form their own economic and social system.  There is enough to cause havoc in our system, but not enough to actually go it alone. But, let them have at it and, while they are doing so, they should forgo the benefits that secular, materialist science has brought to them.  No anti-biotics for them, I say.

But, just like Gil Dodg'em, who complains incessantly about the public schools while he continues to send his children to them, they won't.  They are far too happy pretending to be persecuted.

Yes, I'm not worried that they overall will achieve a critical mass.  But they can disrupt things, as has been done here in Kansas the past decade.  If enough of these folks vote for Kathy Martin and her fellow radical conservatives, we could once again have a creationist BOE.  I think chances this will happen are not good, but even the possibility of being thrown back into a new round of fights over science education is worrisome - we just shouldn't have to be dealing with this, but we are.

Indeed, if they didn't feel persecuted and ignored (both at the same time, imagine that!), they wouldn't have much to talk about.

If I recall correctly, KF is not even a citizen of the US. It's amusing that he is telling us how to vote. Usually the right-wingers get upset when some furriner meddles in US politics. Maybe DT will notice and ban him for sedition or some such offense.

Oh well, it's not as if we don't have lots of evidence of double standards in ID "thinkers" already.

I’m not sure which of the following applies. I report, you decide.

Kairosfocus is:
A) Taking Howard Ahmanson and Phillip Johnson for a ride showing them the world that ’should’ be theirs.
B) Heading off for Tierra del Fuego in order to establish the Peoples Democratic Theocracy.
or
C) Escaping an angry calypso band after he sang the Banana Boat song ("daylight come and we wanna go home")

I'd say they're listening to Evo rhetoric and the heat for the hot air is being produced from their foreheads.

I guess when they keep on hearing the same stuff over and over about how ID isn't "real science" but Darwinism is, they get a bit mad.
